The motive behind the Jonestown mass suicide (at least as presented to the cultists) was to make a point and draw support for communism (really, it was likely because Jim Jones was an insane power addict and forcing that many people to "willingly" end their own lives was the ultimate display of power). The Heaven's Gate cultists believed that their suicide would allow them to catch a ride on a passing UFO and ascend to the plane of aliens, which is creepily similar to the Merge.
