  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Fair warning: don't use the uninstaller.

Speculation below, spoilers for spoilers
People are saying that because Sans says that he’s “busy tomorrow” and Toriel makes a reference to smash bros that this is clear and undeniable proof that Sans will be in smash. Even tho Toby is a massive troll, people are taking this seriously.

As for the actual story... holy fuck. Does anyone get the ending bits in the town? This is some fuck shit

It's kind of some sort of AU. It's implied that the game already knows who you are but every character is in a role a bit different from the ending we saw in Undertale
Knowing Toby this is probably intentional and the next “episode” or whatever we’re getting here and will begin to explain some of the more... interesting versions of the characters and the shit with ya boi Ness Sans

Finished the game, what the hell was that Toby, like holy shit

Practically your character just wake up like a zombie, rip his SOUL from his chest and throw it to the cage then he begin to laugh like a maniac

Quite surprised by this. I go to sleep drunk and got five or six spergs bitching at me to try this out the moment I wake up. Honestly? I quite enjoy it. I enjoyed Undertale, though more for the story than the gameplay, and this one surprised me once or twice. I recommend playing it blind if you're interested in Undertale, but if you ain't then go ahead and watch a walkthrough if you're at least curious.
Welp, guess I'm writing a long-ass little review. I like the way the combat's headed. It still feels like Undertale's somewhat generic fight/spare system, but this time the addition of partners means you can have combo attacks/acts that allow you to do larger actions such as making all enemies fall asleep. The addition of a character that you can't directly control is a rather interesting concept, as is the idea of enemies that attack and support (a rather large upgrade over the enemy combos of Undertale). Other than the fighting the menu has gotten an overhaul that I largely approve of. Though it's still keyboard only it's pretty nifty and easier to understand, a godsend considering you now have two or three characters to deal with at once.

The story is.. Well Christ, how do I put it? I liked it. I kind of knew that (at least in a pacifist playthrough) that the dragon/gator bitch was going to turn good, and yet I was a touch worried when she started beating the fuck out of that Sans wannabe. The game tells you quite a few times that you don't have to kill anyone, which makes me wonder with the ending of the demo whether Toby's trying to deconstruct the 'spare everything' bit of the game or not. The story you do get is simple and feels like Earthbound, which isn't surprising given Toby's near fetish of it. It's cheerful, creepy, but generally just funny like the original Undertale, with some awful fun characters. I approve.

I played the demo, and I gotta say that I'm really loving the grazing mechanics on this game.

Is not technically a demo

Tobi went full Telltales

And i agree the grazing mechanics are very good and having other party members and a healer give the game some grade of strategy, unfortunately one of the party members is useless until half of the game because she refuse to listen to your orders

I’m gonna say that the combat had some refreshing ideas but ultimately didn’t really hit the spot for me.

Spare mechanics in Undertale usually had a slight tinge of a challenge in what you had to choose for each enemy. I don’t think I incorrectly ACTed at all in Delta Rune. Just had Kris act, Ralsei spare, rinse/repeat. Probably the only monster that stuck out to me was the block enemy.

Still, the story is just off-putting enough for me to want more.

I’m adding my additions to this discussion below, spoilered just in case
I think it’s also worthwhile to consider the narrative and thematic difference between the Undertale and Deltarune. It’s a bit easy to miss because of the new characters but I think the battle interface may hold some level of significance: in undertale every is battle emulates the Mother 1 battle screen and thus creates the idea that you’re looking through Frisk’s eyes because you ARE Frisk. In Deltarune battles are displayed in a Chrono Trigger style setup where the enemies are encounter on the overworld and all sprites are reused between battle and overworld. Notably this makes the player an outside observer over the entire battle, rather than placing you in the face of your opponent.

While the game still has some clear Earthbound/Mother 3 inspirations, there’s a lot of visible Chrono Trigger influence: the “Wake up” scene at the beginning of the game, the battle layouts, the new party-based ACT system, the visuals etc.

There’s a lot more to discuss on the matter of the game’s themes and what may possibly be happening, but I’ll hold on posting any theories for now unless requested, because they will be long, spergy and spoilery.
