Even here in Europe we drew that thing in school. Honestly, no idea what the exact origin is. Even the aforementioned article and wikipedo page are unclear about its origin.
Apparantly called the Stussy S because it was said the company Stussy used it as its logo in the 90s and 2000s, which is where it started, but the company has denied ever using the symbol

Like a date we can trace in the human calendar to when the 'kewl s' startedBeing so easy to draw, I would guess it's just some intrinsic symbol in our conciousness we've been drawing or carving for tens of thousands of years, and probably has no real meaning or origin. It's just art in general. Looks cool and makes us feel good
