I'm sure you are all aware that lately, the internet has become a breeding ground for people to just ask (or in some cases, demand) money from other people for nothing. I mean, it's one thing when it comes to homeless people, or someone starts a gofundme for an operation for their child that they can't possibly afford. That's all well and good. Or hell, even people that may not be homeless, but for some reason, they can't work like the rest of us, and maybe even have a lot of medical bills or other things of that nature, on top of that. Or maybe it's a family that does work hard, but they had a lot of bad luck and need a leg up. I'm all for that, no issues.

But then there are these people who have their patreons or other payment methods that want people to give them money for basically nothing. And many of these people don't have any sort of REAL job to speak of, provide nothing in return for donations, and in general are just lazy entitled slobs. Being on Kiwi Farms, I'm sure you're all well aware of what kind of people I refer to, most notably Chris, and ADF, for example.

A common tactic these people use is to make themselves out to be a victim in some manner. This works in two ways. For one, it can earn them "pity bux" and for two, it provides them with a convenient excuse as to why they can't be a productive member of society(i.e : "I'm being harassed and threatened! I fear for my safety, so I can't go out and get a job. The link to my Patreon is...")

I don't know about everyone else, but I think I hate these people more than anyone else. I mean sure, it's not my choice what to do with money that isn't mine, and I certainly don't intend to give these societal leeches a dime, but it just bothers me, for a couple reasons. For one, it bothers me because these incredibly lazy people are getting money for absolutely nothing. Secondly, it bothers me because I think it is setting a bad precedent for future generations. Why pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make something of your life, when you can just create a pity party for yourself and rake in the donations!

Look, I also realize that most of these people aren't actually getting much money, and some are just barely scraping by, due to minor donations and unwise spending (again, like CWC and ADF), but a few do get a fair amount. Hell, some might call it an obscene amount, considering it's free money.

Thoughts?

People begging for pity bucks are annoying.

But I think content creators (YouTubers, artists, cosplayers, ect.) Having a patreon is fine as long as they dont whine about oppression and being a victim around the clock. Hell many of them make more than they would with a shitty job at Taco bell so i cant blame them for being fulltime internet content creators.

Of course, people who do jack all and don't even attempt to (phil) are just abusing these platforms and people who donate to them are gullible and stupid.

Pitybux posts always start with "I hate to have to do this" and/or "My name is _______, I'm [oppressed label] [oppressed label] [oppressed label] and I need your help!" It infuriates me how people can pander so blatantly, and how other people will fall for it!

I think I have screenshots of some particularly cringey donations posts, will hunt around for them.

I'm fine with giving money to content creators who put time and effort into their works. But victim complexes who refuse to work? Fuck that noise.

Eh, I find it's not really my business-- either to dictate what other people do to get money, or what other people do with their own money. Sure, there are causes I wish people wouldn't give money to, but I'm not salty enough to get upset over it when they do (unless it was like, someone in my family giving money to white supremacists or something, then I'd totally make it my business).

But people on the Internet? I don't really care at all.

If people are stupid enough to give retards free money for nothing I can't blame them for taking it. It's the fault of the people giving to them. Besides, I'd prefer that these people get their free money from idiots who give it up willingly than taking it from the taxpayers.

It's nothing new at all, it's just more visible due to the net.
True, but, you see bums on the street and often they are talking to voices in their heads and sleeping on park benches. Some of them are alcoholics. On the other hand, someone with the wherewithal and dedication to set up a begging site on the internet seems more suspect to me in terms of the degree that they are rationalizing their laziness with their own victimhood mythology.

It's unfortunate because there actually are good causes out there to support online but they risk being trivialized in the sea of ADF-type schemes.

In the end, the people at fault are the ones who are dumb enough to give them money, can't blame people for trying to cash in on the e-begging fad. As long as people aren't asking for donations under false pretense, there really isn't anything I can object to, annoying as it may be. I mean, nobody forces you to give anything to these people and they are easier to ignore than your average street beggar.

The way I see it is that Patreon is all around a great service for actual content creators and the cut they take from e-beggars just goes to make the company healthier.

A lot of the frustration probably comes from the perceived injustice of people like Chris getting free money while other, more deserving people, get less or nothing, but what's the alternative?

I actually agree and you made an excellent point.

But I do have one question for you.

...What about people that do both? (again, like Chris and ADF)

Simple, if you are medically able to work and don't have a physical or GOOD mental reason (not something like muh anxiety or depression) disability, and yet you don't or refuse to then you shouldn't get any welfare. Welfare should be used to help out the poor that fall on bad times like being laid off or another recession hits, not used as something when you feel like lounging around all day. I do believe in welfare, I don't believe in free handouts. Of course you can't always get a job. Only real excuse would be a extreme lack of jobs in a area, but there is no way it is impossible to find one.

Maines system seems pretty nice to me.

Now for those that just e-beg and somehow live off of that, well they are lazy, but they are also getting fools to donate to them. So honestly it's not really hurting everybody else.

I'm of the opinion that if there's no jobs in your area, then move or re-skill. Nobody is owed a living because they chose to live in a certain area, and travel is so cheap these days that it's really no excuse at all.

I'm really curious as to where you live that travel is so cheap, because as far as I know, airfare and gas money is ridiculous...maybe a bus ticket is cheap, but unless you're really desperate to get out, you can't move your necessities like that.

Also, housing. Rent might be cheap in the rathole meth dealer side of town, but anyplace where you don't have a high chance of getting shot is likely going to be unaffordable. I know for a fact that housing is ridiculously overpriced where I currently live. Houses that went for like, $90k a few years ago are now over $200k at least, often $300k. This isn't in some affluent high-end section either, this is just on the podunk/boondocks edge of of the town. "Just move" is just not feasible.

And re-skilling...that frequently takes money. Money that, if you're already reduced to e-begging, you likely already don't have. Sure, the starving artists typically bring it on themselves, but there's plenty of 'useful' skills that still don't ensure you have a job - if you have a degree but no experience yet, employers in your field are frequently going to pass you over. If you're trying to get an unskilled job, they'll see your degree and consider you overqualified, and AGAIN, you will frequently be passed over. So again, that's still not feasible.

E-begging isn't noble by any stretch, but I can see why some people do it. Though, I still prefer the content creators because at least you're getting SOMETHING for your money (something something capitalism/$20 can buy many peanuts metaphor).

The West.

Whenever I hear people making all sorts of excuses about how they're forced to stay where they are and not get a job because of reasons, it comes out like this:

Woe is me, I can't be bothered to get a greyhound bus ticket and put up with some discomfort in order to better myself, better suckle on the government tit for the rest of my life and wait for things to just improve around me while I lie here like a disgusting slug.

If people put as much effort into doing things as they did into thinking up excuses for why they can't do them, then the world would be a fucking utopia.

Also when I lost my job and had to do a stint driving forklift trucks on the night shift in a warehouse, I just didn't tell them I had a degree. If you can't figure out how to lie well enough to get a zero-skill manual labour job then you're probably too retarded to live anyway

There are schmucks who are willing to give money to anyone who seems to be oppressed?
where do I sign up?

Patreon, then Tumblr. Make sure to mention some niche, like that you're genderqueer or something. Then, tell a harrowing tale of how you were harassed on a subway or something, and how people are bullying you over the internet. Whether any of this is true or not is unimportant. Don't even worry about making your story look credible! (if anyone does some checking into your past and calls you out on your bullshit, simply accuse them of being transmisogynist)

Then just sit back and watch the pitybux come-a-rollin' in

tl;dr: "It's tumblr's fault I'm disabled!"

I feel money shouldn't go to people that don't want to help themselves, assuming they don't have some disability that prevents them from getting a decent job.

People are free to donate to any Tumblrina that strikes their fancy, but it's still sad to see these assholes get hundreds when there are so many decent folks who could just use a little extra cash to make it through hard times.
