Unpopular views about music

Yeah, probably. Of course, when something you don't like becomes popular, it's easy to get annoyed by it.

And some people just hate it due to personal tastes (or if it's legitimately bad, but that's besides the point). But I do have to agree about the whole "Hate Bandwagon" a lot of the time. More so when people want said musician to out and out die.

I also like to think that rock music is one of the few genres that is hard to fuck up entirely. Key word here being "Entirely". And I actually do like some country music from before the 1990s.

Well, I wouldn't shed any tears over Justin Bieber's death, but I don't know how vocal I'd be about actually wanting him to die either. The kid's an annoying, pampered brat, and like every other mass produced pop starlet, his musical talents are average at best. Other artists don't annoy me as much. I mean, yeah, Miley Cyrus' antics are a little embarrassing, but at least she has a couple of catchy songs... plus its nothing Madonna wasn't doing decades earlier.

Yeah, old school country is pretty good though there are some decent artists from the 90s onward too. I'm particularly partial to Dwight Yoakam, as well as some more country rock/alt-country groups like the Drive-By Truckers, Calexico, Neko Case, etc. Which reminds me, I just picked up 'English Oceans' the other day and haven't had a chance to listen to it yet...

If you guys are interested in some high end Country (and I do mean high end), you should check out Chet Atkins, that is if you don't know him already.

As for my actual unpopular opinion: I'm not a big fan of the whole "fast playing=no soul" mentality, especially if it's used excusively on guitarists. No technique is inherently more emotive than the other; It all depends of the musician and the listener's affinity to the given music.

"The Beatles are overrated/mediocre/terrible" is probably the most popular unpopular opinion about music.

Yeah...but that's because it's true. They are super overrated. They aren't crap, but they aren't the music gods that baby boomers pretend them to be. I was in a 70s cover band a year and a half ago and we played Paul McCartney's Jet. The song is literally one chord (A major) for the verses and intro.

I think Christian Weston Chandler is the greatest American parody song artist since 'Weird' Al Yankovic.

Wait, what do you mean those aren't song parodies? :cryblood:

Really though, I thought Chinese Democracy was good, wasn't disappointed by the wait for it to be released when it finally was and it sounds great played live in concert.

Prepare yourselves everyone, I'm about to blow your mind with some truth.

This is a good album. And not only is it a good album, it's one of Oingo Boing's best.
OH YEAH I FUCKING WENT THERE.

Fans tend to not like this album because it's a lot more mellow then all the other ones, but fuck 'em. They're stupid and don't realize why that is. A lot of the songs are mellow and have postitive messages about life not sucking because before he made the album, the lead singer convinced two suicidal teens not to kill themselves. "Out of Control" is basically a PSA about not killing yourself.

I have a demo of this song and the vocals are even more emotional and sincere.
And that's not the "one good song" on the album.
When The Lights Go Out, Glory Be, Flesh N' Blood, Is This, and The Long Breakdown are all good songs.
The last minute of the final song Try To Believe is one of the best endings I've ever heard for an album.
Oh, and Skin is on this album, and it's the greatest song ever made.

Elvis had more of a rockabilly sound than rock 'n roll, so I don't think he "stole" rock 'n roll from black people or anything.

The Beatles and Stones were the ones that did that. :tomgirl:

To be honest, I find it unbearably pretentious when people say that a piece of music lacks "soul". Like, what makes THEM the experts on what has a "soul"?

Exactly! Just like in any case of fiction\entertainment\art worth mentioning, music is an interactive process. The listener must put some effort into the experience as well. I mean, I can understand that different people have different expectations from the music they listen to; I have a friend who listens to music almost exclusively as background noise, save from a few instances where he can associate it with movies\events he's fond of. But really, I hate all kinds of musical dogmas. Even if I stumble across a genre I usually don't like I still try to find stuff to appreciate in it.

I have to agree, and I have the same feelings towards Led Zeppelin. I mean, I do have my favorite songs from both bands, but really, they had more innovative and versatile contemporaries, like Frank Zappa or John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. I'm not gonna lie, some of my favorite musicians were influenced by both bands (Joe Satriani, Tommy Emmanuel, Al Di Meola, Steve Vai etc), but then again, you can't deny the influences of Zappa and McLaughlin on said musicians either, even if they didn't have the same media presence.

It's like McDonald's. Yeah, it's super popular. Yeah, everyone eats it at one point or another. But that does NOT mean it's good.

Call me cheap if ya like, but I love covers. I love it when someone takes someone else's song and goes on a different perspective with it. Three of my favorite covers are the Vitamin String Quartet cover of Macklemore's Thrift Shop, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds cover of Concert Blonds' The Ship Song, and the modern Gregorian Monks/rock cover of Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

I'm also fond of old school/new school blend bands like Flogging Molly & The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band.

I hate Metal. Most death/thrash/hardcore/black/whatever metal bands sound like someone belt-sanding a peacock, overlaid with the sound of a banshee douching with a sandblaster, while a set of bagpipes has angry sex with a car alarm in the background.

Despite the lead singer drama that the band likes to get itself into, I think Nightwish only gets better with every album they release. I did like Tarja, but by the time Anette came around, Tuomas had improved a lot with composing his music, and I can't wait to see what they're able to do with Floor Jansen as their singer.

Wait, Anette was kicked out too? Geez.
