I'll say this about the Chandlers. Both Bob and Barb were/are assholes. Both Bob and Barb were estranged from or disowned by their entire families. (pretty much) If all of your relatives want nothing whatsoever to do with you, that says something about the kind of person you are. Bob and Barb were two drunks who ended up getting pregnant, probably accidently, although Barb might have gotten pregnant to prevent Bob from leaving her.

The reason that Bob and Barb stayed together even though they didn't like each other was that all they had were each other. Both had previously failed relationships/marriages, families that wanted nothing to do with them, etc. Together, Bob and Barb could pool their meager resources and survive throughout their retired years. Chris was just an additional factor keeping Bob and Barb together.

Bob and Barb also shared the same persecution complex, unwillingness to take or teach responsibility, many of the same delusions, and an attitude of "take whatever you can, give nothing back" to the world. Chris was born with Autism, but he was raised in a sort of isolation by two selfish, thoughtless neurotic assholes who stayed together for convenience. It was a weird dynamic that kept the Chandler household together, but it worked, and it helped produce the manchild that we all know today.

This. Very much this. A lot of people on here always want to see/paint Bob in a more sympathetic light, while he was only marginally better. He didn't hoard and he tried to stay active rather then willingly become lazy, but he still filed several lawsuits regarding Chris being "unfairly" ejected from Boy Scouts and school. He actually believed Chris when he lied out of his ass and said that Megan, Snyder, Mimms, and Lucas opened credit cards in his name. People seem to forget all about the Matthew Nobel Call (http://sonichu.com/cwcki/Matthew_Noble_call), which demonstrates Bob feels his special snowflake is as persecuted as Barb feels she is (or close to it).

After reading that transcript you have to feel bad for Barb a little. If she was in as poor health as said at the time then you just want to slap Chris across the side of the head. I knew he was lazy but when his own mother is too ill to do anything he just makes excuses and doesn't wanna do the simplest of thing. No wonder the house (inside and out) looked like it needed a fucking enema. Granted all of them were hoarders to some extent but you can see from the transcript she is trying to get Chris to do at least fucking something.

The only thing she wanted Chris to do was drop everything in his life to move his and Bob's shit out of the way to make room for more hoard.
