Barb would just keep on living, no matter how miserable she became. Leto let himself be killed because he knew it was necessary for the Golden Path. Barb isn't that noble, and the Chris-gholas would just get stupider and worse with each cloning, and would never stand up to her. It would be a cycle of misery and fail and Barbage. The Barbage might extend life for Barb, but it sure as hell wouldn't expand her consciousness.

We know Barb was a pretty selfish woman and all that, but to be fair, Barb was pretty old already by the time of this recording, to bitch about Bob was unreasonable but to ask Chris to help around the house was not out of the question. If she was risking herself and fell twice while moving, that is definitely a red flag. So I wonder if part of Barb's laziness was in response to her son's laziness, she thought if he wasn't gonna help her clean, then fuck you! Look at what happened with the spaghetti, they didn't want it so she stopped cooking for them, so maybe she got tired of Chris being a lazy little shit and stopped cleaning up after him. It was a unhealthy family all around to be sure.

This is one of the best posts I've ever read. Gobsmacked I'm having a discussion that somehow combines the Dune saga with a hillbilly hoarder and her moronic offspring. I love this forum.

Well, it just shows how she never thought her child was worth hard work on her part. When he was younger, she and Bob pretended he didn't have any significant problems and just let him putter around wherever he liked. Assuming his trouble dealing with the outside world even is the reason she's caging him up (I think it's more about her clutching him like a possession), she doesn't want to think of a humane solution, she just decided to lock him up and say "you can't pretend to be a real boy anymore". And although she might die tomorrow, it's equally possible she'll live for another ten years. Is her pet just supposed to live like a subhuman prisoner for the rest of his mother's life, just because she's too tired to care?

I've said it before, I think Barb considers Chris more of a pet than her child. Like a pet ape or monkey. Look how they have treated their pets, both dogs and cats: Patti was locked up in a dog run the majority of the time. The cats basically just pissed and shit all over the house (I doubt they even had litter boxes, or if they did they were so full of old litter and shit that they were no longer usable by the cats), and Snoopy and Clover just use the floor.

They never get walked, they probably rarely get played with, they never see the vet for regular checkups, they probably have fleas...why would Barb treat Chris any different? Chris is fucking half feral. They do the bare minimum to assure that their pets aren't dead (although I'm sure the 14BC clean up crew has or will find a few dead cats and probably a couple crushed litters of kittens in the hoard) and that's pretty much what she did with Chris. And when he was young they would frequently pawn him off on a babysitter so they could go get their drink on. Lazy, feckless, irresponsible people like Bob and Barb should not be parents or pet owners.

Hell, no one properly housebroke him.

I don't entirely understand why I'm posting this but it feels like the right thing to do.

I think her brief (half-hour) interaction with Ivy is probably as good a glimpse as any into how Barb functions around other people, at least in a work environment. Perhaps a little too finicky, but otherwise efficient and fully capable of civility and friendliness.
We only really get fairly brief insights into the world of Barb, and that usually comes through Chris. In other words, we almost exclusively see Barb in private, minus the usual image that people use when dealing with the outside world. We know she's crotchety, litigious, possessive, emotionally blackmailing and mad as a bicycle, but I would guess that most people, day-to-day, don't really get to see that side of her unless they cross her. It's possible that, as with most people, in everyday life she appears pretty normal.

I'd say that's less likely these days, given that she's basically a shut-in stuck with her retarded tranny son with very little contact with the outside world, but during her working days she was probably able to appear reasonably sane.

"I must not stress. Stress is the mind-killer. Stress is the little death that brings crashing into slumber. I will tard rage at my stress. I will permit it to provide me with an excuse to shit myself and do nothing. And when it has gone past, I will compose a self-pitying Facebook status. Where the stress has gone, I will have achieved nothing. Only dirty crapped briefs will remain."

This is beautiful!

its also possible that they both saw in one and other their last chance at happiness.

Better to give marriage once last swing then die alone.

I agree with this, although I wouldn't put it quite so romantically. I think they both decided it was better to have a partner in old age than not.

You also have to consider the era they are from. They come from a time with really specific gender roles, where managing a household was a two person job, with male jobs and female jobs. They also came from an era where living together on a trial basis wasn't as acceptable. Perhaps if they were born 50 years later, they would have decided to move in together without marriage for a while.

But they did stay married, and both of them had previous divorces, and previous spells of absentee parenting. So even if they weren't madly in love, the feeling that it was a better arrangement than single-hood must have persisted to some degree.

It goes to show you how intelligent this forum is because Dune is not easy to get into.

Speaking of Chris-gholas, this makes you wonder what Barb would use as an axlotl tank to spawn said gholas... (shudder)

My two cents. Economic/emotional self preservation on Barb's part, and lust/ loneliness on Bob's.

Cole had probably began to be estranged at this point. Barb was still kinda pretty, but it was fading away. She needed a sugar daddy.

Bob probably just had a sad divorce and took one look at that raven haired babe and said "jackpot!" Little did he know what a whited sepulchre she would be....

In the early days of trolling, was it known Barb was this... unhinged? I'm surprised such a weird aspect of Barb from 2009 went mostly unnoticed for so long.

I always assumed in the peak years of trolling (2007-2010) Barb was considered lazy, fat, apathetic, and stubborn, but mostly dismissed by trolls as (mostly) sane and just another minor aspect of Chris's life compared to things like the Love Quest and Sonichu.

Were the depths of her strange, controlling behavior and emotionally incestuous relationship with Chris well known before Bob's death?

Barb's batshit craziness is a recent revelation by Christorical standards. Although we've always had access to the basic story, that Barb sunk her claws into Bob after a night of back alley boozing, for a long time, Barb was the mystery member in the Chandler household. We knew about Chris because he gave us more information about himself than we knew what to do with. Chris told us about Bob, and Bob actually talked on the phone a few times. Barb remained elusive, a background player, and for lack of knowledge of her, many gave her the benefit of the doubt.

It wasn't until the Dr. Perron phone call that we could really get a three-dimensional picture of Barb. This was the first time we'd realized the full extent of the squalor of 14BC. We realized that there was a direct connection between Barb's apathy and Bob's deterioration, as well as Chris's filthy habits. Shortly after, Bob died, and Barb started entering the spotlight more and more. That phone call alone changed many people's view of Barb.

So to answer your question, yes, there was a time when you could suggest Barb was probably an OK lady and you wouldn't get much argument.

WORDS WORDS WORDS

Thanks. The early years of Christory are cluttered with weens shouting "JULAY" and "CHRIS IS A PEDOFORK XD" that a lot of early red flags are easy to miss. It's interesting that Barb, once considered a minor actor in the saga of Our Autistic Hero, is probably the biggest influence to Chris's strange, selfish behaviors and warped, self-destructive worldview.

But the dots went unconnected for nearly half a decade.

I can vouch for people with mental-illnesses passing as mentaly sound to those outside their immidate family. If his friends knew that <name withheld> has spent the better part of two decades physically and emotionaly abusing my mother and me, I doubt they'd be his friends.

Also, Barb said she had been through quite a number of jobs, which made me wonder if her vindictiveness/childishness was one reason why she kept changing jobs?
Possibly. I'm sure her atittude didnt help. But I kind of feel like back in those days people without a college degree switched jobs alot. I remember my uncle talking about how he had just got up and walked off of jobs for any number of things. Dishes being literally thrown into a sink, some gay guy insisting on being called "Pancake." etc. And because this is pre internet it was a little harder for that reputation to spread.
Actually refering to a different exceptional individual, but yeah.
*flips through thread* Oooooh my bad. I was wondering why @Altissimo was flipping out over Chris. She wasn't.

I don't entirely understand why I'm posting this but it feels like the right thing to do.

Is that Barb in the background laying among filth?

After reading that transcript you have to feel bad for Barb a little. If she was in as poor health as said at the time then you just want to slap Chris across the side of the head. I knew he was lazy but when his own mother is too ill to do anything he just makes excuses and doesn't wanna do the simplest of thing. No wonder the house (inside and out) looked like it needed a fucking enema. Granted all of them were hoarders to some extent but you can see from the transcript she is trying to get Chris to do at least fucking something.

Nope, not even a little.

I don't buy for a second that she was in poor health, well, poorer than could be expected from living in a pigsty and eating garbage for years. For as much as you could blame Chris for not doing anything remember it was Barb who was accumulating barbage here and you can be sure she'd raise hell if her little autist tried to move a damn thing.

He learned from a master :snorlax:

The only reason she's trying to get him to clean is so she won't have to do it herself. After all, why should she clean when she has her own personal gopher?
