Another typical situation is the judge requests financial records from the man, and the man says to himself, "That bitch has no right to my assets, I'm not giving them these docs," and then lo and behold, it turns out that requests from judges are not polite suggestions.
People also just don't understand that the world doesn't care about what you think the law should be. They get into court and act like total jackasses because they think they shouldn't have to be there, or that the law they're being charged under is stupid, or the judge is a dick, or whatever, and apparently seem to think that if you just act like a big enough jackass in the courtroom, the judge will say, "Aw, gee whiz, you're right, this whole proceeding is super silly, let's just forget the whole thing." They are then shocked when judges are not impressed by their antics and neither are higher courts.
