Valheim - Get your survival fix with this low fantasy game of the year candidate.

I have to share the bullshit that just happened.

I just figured out how to sail because I figured it was easier to carry ore back and forth between my 2 bases. Turns out sailing takes even longer than walking with all the rocks, sandbars, and peninsulas in the way, and that's if the wind decides to be in my favor.

As soon as I reach my second base, a couple of graydwarfs spawn, so I get off my raft and go slay them. As soon as I'm done, the ground shakes and I realize that a fucking troll is behind me. I run off a distance to eat and get my bow out as a horde of graydwarfs chase after me. After I deal with them I go to find the troll and it's fucking with my base and there's more graydwarfs after me. I get out my sword to deal with them, but now the troll has noticed me and by the time I think I have a clearing to back off to gain some distance I'm out of stamina. I get caught on a tree stump and I'm dead. I respawn at the second base that is almost entirely obliterated and I immediately pick up a ton of shit that was in my chests. I book it for where I died but I just can't take any of it because I have too much stuff already. I try to run off and remove the shit I don't need but the graydwarf horde catches up to me and I die again. Third times the charm and I get my stuff back. No enemies around, not even the troll, which is weird because they were right next to me and my base when I died. Just me and my shit laying everywhere. I have the desire now to halt everything and chop down every single stump and shrub in the black forest.

Tis the life of a Viking.

Dude, I'm currently in Black Forest farming tin and copper and wondering where to find a sultring core. Dicked around trying to kill a couple greydwarves that protect some kind of unholy shrine (some weird thing that glows red and seems to be made of branches and roots?). Got killed a couple times and I now wonder if these guys level up when they kill me, cause there used to be a few normal ones, one brute and one shaman. Killed the shaman and a few regular ones, now there's 3 brutes.

So I decide to get back to my forward base and just ignore that shrine for the time being... and I have to say, I really like my forest hideout. It's some old ruin of a big tower that I made usable by patching it up with wood and putting a nice lookout with a roof on top. Anyway, I get back to my tower, start to roast me some meat and repairing some of the wooden gates along the palisade, so I walk around the tower and there's a troll, almost as tall as my tower, that just bashes half my defenses with one swing of his giant club.
It has been years since I last shat bricks in a game like that. Now that fucker prowls the forest around my tower and I have no fucking clue how to get rid of him.

You could kill him.

I'll have to... but this is going to be ugly. I don't have a good bow and I don't have many arrows, so I'll have to do this Dark Souls style and roll around the ground and stab him in the taint a lot.
There's a lot of copper deposits around, so killing the troll is a must.

Speaking of which, afaik, those cores that I need to make a smelter can be found in random chests or in graves in the black forest. Is there any shortcut to find graves? I was just roaming the woods up till now, hoping to find them at random.

Glad you're having fun in the game, I have had similar experiences. I haven't lost my shit in a game like this since probably legacy rust, like first day in a shack surrounded by the sound of russians with axes. But this is PVE, which is crazy, usually only PVP style games can give that on edge feeling.

You can kite the troll but make sure you have full food and are rested because with level 1 bow and wood arrows it's something like 25 arrows to kill it. You can kite him out into the meadows which makes it a lot easier. Honestly they only way he can kill you is in the forest by knocking over trees, in the meadows they are easy to kill. Once you kill him immediately make troll skin pants. Much better than the starter pants.

The thing you encountered in the forest was a graydwarf nest and yes they can be a real bitch. especially when the shamans are healing the brutes. try and kite the shamans away and then rest up, food up and arrow the thing down.

the cores I have a hard time finding as well. they appear in the crypts but you can search a couple crypts and not find any, which sucks. they also can be found in the swamp biome but on my seed I'm still sailing around looking for it.

Absolutely, this game is a blast. It tickles my nostalgia for older games, my taste for exploration and crafting, I am now pretty sure that this was worth every cent to me.
And the moment I got around the tower to see that huge fucker turning around was like out of a horror movie. Or, if you excuse the dorky comparison: like straight out of Attack on Titan.

That guy kept walking around my base and I managed to take him down in my second attempt. Kiting him with a bow is actually pretty manageable and the forest at least has the advantage of blocking his path, so I shot him in the face, ran between a couple trees and took potshots as he lumbered around them. I would compare the satisfaction of beating that guy with my first successful Mun-landing in KSP.

Never played any game like this except Minecraft, so I can't tell how it fares compared to newer titles in this genre, but up till now, the game is a lot of fun and the progress feels really rewarding. Finding a new resource, killing a new enemy, being able to craft a new item, it's really fun.

Yeah, went to my first grave, decked out like I wanted to wipe out the entire kingdom of Norway on my own and... nothing in there except glowing mushrooms.
Hope I'll find a core soon, I want to get my smelting going.

Edit:
Found another grave with 6 of those cores inside. Pretty neat, too bad you need 5 each for a Smelter and a Kiln. You can make charcoal by burning meat, so I can make copper at horrible inefficiency, at least.

If there is enough interest it might be worth looking into starting a Kiwi Server? This game is quite fun on your own but better with others. I’ve made it to the last biome with friends at this point, but slogging through the swamps is difficult on your own.

must set a passwordo via PM's, no doubt there will be trolls even with the PVP disabled by some.

Yup. Nothing stopping some dickhead from gathering everyone’s hard-earned black metal, sailing out to the middle of the ocean and dumping it all overboard.

Can someone make a server and PM the kiwis on this thread that are interested the IP and password? Thanks! I want to play with some other people this weekend.

we can even ask @Null to take us as a stream for the next lolcowTV because why not? this one is about black history.
There are totems of protection that prevent conventional niggardry and protect your chests
yeah but there is the fact that you are playing with other kiwis, non official rules like the SS13 server means niggatry can occur.
A crafting survival game with rpg elements? I gonna, im GONNA COOOOOOOM.
a viking-themed crafting survival game* else in what rock have you been under to miss conan sexiles?

i've only been playing this because it's basically just oblivion minecraft from a gameplay perspective. i think the rust comparisons don't do it justice because rust is dogshit whereas having trolls or undead raid your shack during zeus' personal lightning storm is cool as fuck

So, I'm currently grinding those sultric cores or whatever they are called and went into another tomb. Entered a chamber with a fuckhuge green skeleton that corners me and wrecks my shit within seconds. Respawn in my camp and realize that I have some food, but no spare weapons, no spare armor, not even wood to craft shit with. So as I collect branches, I curse past me, craft me a shitty stone axe and juice up on meat, blueberries and mushrooms, before I get back to my corpse. Inside the tomb, I make for a mad dash towards my shit past the giant spoopy skeleton, run back outside, repair everything and head back to my base. On my way, I get killed by a pack of wolves.

I have to say, not many games have managed to get me this close to a heart attack. I love it. Definetly worth every cent. If they iron out some kinks and optimize it for larger buildings and more people, it could be one of my top 10 games of all time.
Even after 16 hours, I'm still blown away by how nice everything looks. The low-poly-low-resolution-shaders-out-the-ass look is utterly amazing and sitting in my humble longhouse, while Thor is throwing thunder and lightning during the mother of all storms with smoke gently floating beneath the rafters... so fucking comfy.

Easy way to collect troll skin:

1. Find a troll cave.
2. Go in with at least 30 flint arrows and full health and stamina.
3. Spot the troll and aim for it's head.
4. Once it notices you (uwu), you can shoot it at least 1 or 2 more times before it reaches you.
5. Once they get to you, back out of the cave and let your stamina and health regenerate.
6. Go back in and repeate until it's dead.
7. Reap your rewards and make the troll armor, which is just as good as base bronze armor.

I'm at 100 hours and I still have yet to defeat the 2nd boss due to dicking around on my massive-as-fuck island and building little huts here and there. I've been marking every cave, spawner, copper deposit, and such that I've come across, and it's made my map almost unreadable unless zoomed in. Gotta say, I haven't been this glued to a game for hours at a time since the minecraft kiwi server before my hideout got nuked due to the server reset ( (:_( I miss my bees). The only thing that keeps me from going onto servers and shit is that I'm having just as much fun doing shit solo and it's starting to eating up my life a bit. Starting over on a server with others would probably make it worse.

Oh and I just discovered draugr camps to the north. Those fuckers take no shits. Raiding them is thrilling.

the game sort of supports larger people but you need the valheim plus mod, building is nightmarish with more than 4 players but just set a base of operations for all the players and you are set. best we wait for the valheim team to officially optimize the game and give more people support.

online servers are pratically empty as people like playing with friends. best wait for updates on the whole kiwi valheim server thing, beating the game and finishing it on solo is nice but these games you can fuck around with others so why not.

Fuck I played for like 5 straight hours last night and was barely even able to make a dent on the plans for my village. It's not much, but between constant runs for copper and tin, getting distracted by trolls and all the other stuff I did manage to get a cozy little base started.

The situation with the tree hurricane (see pics) had me cracking up. That's one way to get a lot of wood quick, just stack three trees up on one and watch the whole thing go down like dominos! Incredible voxel engine and game physics.

Now that is one comfy little fort. Really can't be overstated how much fun it is to build a nice little base and just mulling around inside. The game also has a soft reward mechanic, where your comfort levels rise with nice furniture, which in turn gives you a small buff for a longer time. So putting together a nice house with nice things actually does something except looking nice, without ramshackling the player to do it.

In a similar way, I like how repairing stuff doesn't need resources, I think being forced to farm resources for upkeep/maintenance of already build stuff is rather tiresome. I don't want to farm 100 wood to repair a gate, it's mere busywork and clicking on all broken pieces is just the right amount of effort you want to put into it.
Also, killed my second troll. You know a game did something right when it's this satisfying to kill a mob.

And I'm now fully decked out in bronze. My character is slow as fuck, but the armor value is more than twice of what it used to be. Can't wait for iron tools and being able to make stuff with stone. I want to built a cozy little fortress on some cliff with great view.

Nice, I've been wondering if I should get off troll gear and onto bronze (I'm +27 defense with all level two troll gear) and into bronze but the movement penalty seemed bad. For now I just have bronze spear and axe and using the rest on my base decorations.
