Valheim - Get your survival fix with this low fantasy game of the year candidate.

Didn't have a chance to play much last night but I did build a little house and was feeling pretty cozy and then "the Forest is moving" message game and like 10 fucking graydwarfs and two shamans attacked my home and fucked it up pretty good. It definitely isn't like the early stages of the Forest where they sorta spook you for a few days then attack these guys came pretty hard as soon as I had a little house built. Was a fun 5 minutes fighting them off. The graydrafs are more bark then bite gotta always try and just kite them as much as possible because unless you get surrounded by them they are pretty harmless. The shamans tho scare me. They have some decent AEO attacks.
The problem with the Shamans for me isn't necessarily their damage (the poison is fairly negligible if you have three foods stacked up), it's that they heal the others. So unless you kill one of the grewdwarves outright, by the time you're done kiting the guy is halfway back to full health because of the Shaman.

Ah that makes sense, was wondering if they were healing the others. I had some clipping issues too during the fight . Was getting stuck on stupid walls in my courtyard. Def seeing some of the EA flaws in the game the more I play but still really enjoying the foundation. One thing that's super annoying why does the bow fire like 20 degrees below where the reticle is? I mean yea you can adjust and "get gud" but it's still stupid.

Bought the game today and played an hour. I really dig the graphics, they managed to pull off a great aesthetic. The atmosphere is pretty good and I get flashbacks to the old classic games of my teenage years.

I need to get used to the crafting, but so far it was okay. Can't really pretend that it's a surprise that getting resources is a bit grindy, but my very humble attempts to make a 2-story hut have so far been successful.
I am cautiously optimistic about the game and a few of my bros are going to set up a server, so this should be a lot of fun, even if the game ends up kinda average. Hopefully, it's optimized enough to handle a couple players without shitting itself.

So I'm like 15 hours in now. Have full troll armor set, decent weapons and I'm just getting going on getting bronze tools and finding the 2nd boss. I like that you can play at your own pace. I feel like I'm progressing pretty well but it's def a bit of a grind solo right now. I need a lot of fucking copper, tin and coal. I'm kinda getting sick of running around. The atmosphere still hits me tho. I was sailing the other day at at night and the waves and the storm were fucking intense. When it cleared up I was honestly relieved. Similar ot making it back to base in Rust after a loot run. It's all PVE tho. I don't really know how much plans they have for PVP, it seems like an afterthought, which it probably should be for now. I wonder if they will open up the game to the modding community too at full release. We'll see!

Just got sucked into this game and I can't stop playing. It's a procedural generated open world survival game with Vikings and your goal is to defeat the 5 bosses and ascend to Valhalla. Good luck though, as if the enemies don't fuck your shit hard enough, the weird crafting mechanics and resource scarcity will. Also, there's multiplayer functionality so that you can build bases and sail the seas with friends.

It's a very comfy game and I can easily see myself putting in 100+ hours in. Anybody else playing this shit?

Edit: Didn't see this thread before I decided to make my own. I even looked to make sure, lol.

Just beat the last boss today and have enjoyed it very much. There are few technical stuff that needs fixing such as buildings will give you frame drops if you build big bases and some net code problems. Hoping those things get fixed and looking forward to the updates.

too bad there is almost no content and the optinization is shit.
Killed the 5 bosses, built a base with every upgrade possible, even went uber autistic and added stone ceiling, got and upgraded the best possible gear/tool/weapons and some extras for good measure

... now what.

I have build exactly two houses and you can feel the frames dropping once you get closer to them... I'm a bit afraid that the game becomes a powerpoint when I start playing with friends and we build a huge base together... that's kind of the appeal to us, to build a big historically inspired ring castle, but it seems that the game would shit itself if we just tried to set up the moat.

Also, maybe it's just me, but terraforming stuff with the hoe is a pain...

Overall, still a game with a good first impression, it's just that they need to optimize the game to hell and back, so people can go wild with buildings.

I know right? I spent 5 hours trying to level a mountain top but the fucking hoe is so iffy I just gave up and moved to the plains.
Is there something like a shovel that works differently later on? With the hoe, you apparently can't dig down, so I built a house with an entrance that had a slight bump of dirt in the doorway and it meant you couldn't pass through, I had to essentially use the level tool to "carry over" a deeper spot towards the door and then fill up that trench once I was done.

If I had to come up with a terraforming mechanic, especially when it comes to building foundations for buildings, just add a flag-item that can be placed anywhere and when the player clicks the hoe on that flag, the hoe will automatically add/remove dirt until it reaches a similar height as the spot that the flag is at. Maybe you could add another flag, so you could actually make slopes with a set angle?

I'm getting Medieval Engineers flashbacks, where I nearly lost my mind trying to use their weird rope-triangle game mechanic to level a flat spot on a mountain and couldn't get that shit to work even remotely.
When you make a game about building houses/castles and the game mechanics barely allow you to lay down a fucking foundation, your game has some serious issues... and what exactly does it say about this whole genre, when the game to do it best was Minecraft?

I personally think Rust's building system is better but I have seen some pretty incredible castles, complete with moats, spike traps and walls on the forums. It's an impressive voxel based world however, much more impressive than Rust's, which isn't voxel, but is also procedural generated. The biomes in Valheim are >>>>> Rust's, which tend to always look completely the same no matter what seed you're on.

Their entire building system (or at least the interface) needs some reworking. Besides the terraforming issues, the structural integrity system needs to be a lot more obvious, and the hammer is the clunkiest build tool I've seen in ages. Fingers crossed that they use Early Access as what Early Access is supposed to be: a platform for testing and developing the game further, as opposed to just a quick influx of cash. After all, they sure as hell got the cash with these 3 million sales.

It's good they had this much of a game at launch, but that is a double edged sword as it does have some clear flaws that need fixing. It is a highly ambitious game however given the voxel nature. I don't think it's hyperbole to say this might be the best looking voxel game to date. That said, gotta build on the foundation.

So, defeated the first boss, the game is pretty solid to this point, the boss fight was actually really cool.
Early access games are always a gamble, but so far the game has delivered. With a bit of polish on the game-mechanics, and a few additions here and there, it could become a pretty awesome title. Even in its current state, I have a feeling it was worth my money, though I need some more time to say that confidently...

I have to share the bullshit that just happened.

I just figured out how to sail because I figured it was easier to carry ore back and forth between my 2 bases. Turns out sailing takes even longer than walking with all the rocks, sandbars, and peninsulas in the way, and that's if the wind decides to be in my favor.

As soon as I reach my second base, a couple of graydwarfs spawn, so I get off my raft and go slay them. As soon as I'm done, the ground shakes and I realize that a fucking troll is behind me. I run off a distance to eat and get my bow out as a horde of graydwarfs chase after me. After I deal with them I go to find the troll and it's fucking with my base and there's more graydwarfs after me. I get out my sword to deal with them, but now the troll has noticed me and by the time I think I have a clearing to back off to gain some distance I'm out of stamina. I get caught on a tree stump and I'm dead. I respawn at the second base that is almost entirely obliterated and I immediately pick up a ton of shit that was in my chests. I book it for where I died but I just can't take any of it because I have too much stuff already. I try to run off and remove the shit I don't need but the graydwarf horde catches up to me and I die again. Third times the charm and I get my stuff back. No enemies around, not even the troll, which is weird because they were right next to me and my base when I died. Just me and my shit laying everywhere. I have the desire now to halt everything and chop down every single stump and shrub in the black forest.

Tis the life of a Viking.

After I killed the first boss, I went back to a little cottage that I upgraded into sort of a forward base (so I have a place to respawn close to the boss fight in case shit goes bad)... I get a message that the forest is moving and get killed by a bunch of greydwarves. I spawn inside the hut with the greydwarves still outside, thank fuck they didn't know I was hiding in there. Once that "Forest is moving" thing ended, I could get my stuff back and hauled ass back to my main base.

Edit: Also, there's this "pile of rocks/wood" thing you can buy to stockpile that stuff, but it takes up about the same space as 2 chests... and one chest can hold 400 units of wood or stone... So building those stockpiles is more or less purely cosmetic. I think it would be pretty handy if those stockpiles worked as building resources when constructing stuff with the hammer. You could plop down your stockpiles of wood and stone and then just build away happily without being forced to carry all that wood and stone with you. Would be really handy in coop-play, since one guy can work on the base while others keep the materials in stock.

The first time I got the "Forest is Moving" event I about shit my pants. Went from chilling in front of my fire to having a herd of enemies trying to topple my base. The graydrarfs are so fucking annoying when a troll is always around. I did see a graydrawf get hit by the troll's log one time tho, that was fucking funny.

The funny thing was that I never got that event when shit was going down. It was just that several groups of graydwarfs and a troll decide to spawn in the same area where my base was and zerg rush me. I have been dealing with an unusually high amount of enemies in that area since acquiring bronze armor, so maybe it's the game increasing difficulty or something? I really should work on improving the wall around my main base just in case simular bullshit takes place there, but I'm lazy and I really want to max out my bronze shit before I do anything like that.

In other news, I decide to spend 2 or 3 hours following the tree in the sky out of curiosity and I discover that the Earth is flat. Good thing I prepared in advance and removed all my shit beforehand.

The game def scales pretty well imo. I'm at bronze and the enemies are coming faster and thicker now in the black forest. When I was mining copper about a dozen graydwarfs, two of their brutes and a troll spawned in around me. I thankfully was able to retreat back to the meadows and defeat them. It was a good fight.

Getting frustrated tho looking for the swamp biome on my seed. I need the cores.

Did you fall off the edge or just tick back round to the other side?

I got distracted with building so I just let the dudes on my server do the exploring while I stayed in one place making a rad fucken longhouse.
