ValiDate - an upcoming (and unsurprisingly racist) visual novel made by SJW's, for SJW's. Currently MIA.

If I was running a video game company, I would put in the effort to make sure that it won't be an laughingstock...and to make it attractive to make an profit out of it.

But considering how the woke crowd fails to understand economics...

I'll fix that for that

But considering how the woke crowd fails to understand everything.
Thats the differnce between a normal person and these devs. They put in the bare minium effort because it's easy dopamine hit, but can't be expected to Live and Learn from the works of yesterday. Heh.

Right here we already have even more issues with the UI. Ugh. I already ranted enough about the text and hierarchy of this but seeing it all put together just makes it even worse. What the heck are those buttons on the bottom? I could get if this was made with tablets/phones in mind. Maybe you tap and you get a mini-window or you hover and it shows the menu, but here, nothing is being visually conveyed to the viewer that's easy to grasp, something that's ESSENTIAL for a VISUAL NOVEL.

Okay, I guess the far left icon is an index? Maybe for character information. The next one is a quick save? Possibly? Forward and Backwards is pretty easy to grasp, but they're kind of stuck in between the dialogue box toggle option. Save is pretty easy to understand (just the generic save icon). Not sure why slider icons are used to represent past dialogue though when it could easily be a hotkey or a button outside of the menu to toggle on and off.

And look, it's not like you can't use symbols for these to save space, but considering the huge white text box we have, why not just make them words? Most modern VNs just use words anyways because it's less confusing and is easy to convey to the player. Right now, Other than a few icons, I don't know what some of these could be. I can guess based off experiences, but once again, if this is to appeal to some minority that NEVER played a dating sim, I'd imagine they'd be a bit confused.. Imagine making a game to be progressive and appeal to marginalized/disabled people, but not have basic options that would help certain groups easily get into your game, like a CLEAR UI.

I think the sliders icon is supposed to be a settings menu, and I do hope hovering over the icons shows text clarifying what they are... If they managed to program that in.
Anyway, can anyone tell me what's going on with that abstract mess of a background? Where are they?

I'd be making this face too if I was stuck in this game.

I'm guessing it's a...hair salon?

Before anyone has the chance to ask: No, I will not JPATG this one if it comes out.

I was willing to do one for Ana Valens' terrible porn game and that's the extent to which I'm willing to descend into madness.
Late, but jesus, you are my hero for enduring that game for us.

I'm under the impression it's someone's house or bedroom, but the double mirrors with the swivel chairs make it more likely that it's a hair salon as Ascendancy0 said. It really is a cluttered mess.

ok ignoring the fact that the background is just a photo with a ps effect, this is such a good example of how not to do backgrounds.

it completely clashes with the characters, its extremely loud, too many colors, too bright, and there's no resting point for your eye to settle on. the background is supposed to compliment the characters and provide a scene, not make it hard to look at.

the big chunky color blocks are just. ugh.

the backgound isnt supposed to draw more attention than the characters themselves

Someone should file a false advertising complaint. It says “making games for gamers like you”, and I don’t think there are too many gamers who hate cis-whitey enough to date the motley assortment of mutated manatees in this shit game.

I find it ironic in a way. In an effort to make a game for "EVERYONE" they end up isolating themselves from anyone who'd have potential interest in the game. It's kind of sad.

Look, I understand making a passion project and wanting to have something for yourself/friends/groups. Even if it's bad, it's just something you like and care for. However, everything about this feels so spiteful and unprofessional. From not adding in a white character unless it's a goal (NO Japanese or Western VN made by competent devs has done this. Imagine doing this for a black character and seeing the potential backlash) when it's going to be the MAJORITY of your audience, to the lack of polish, to the wonky character designs/backgrounds. It's not like this IDEA (keep in mind I said idea here) of a 20-year old something going on dating adventures is a bad one for dating sim. Plenty of them are like that with some sort of twist or really good writing. Hell, it can open up opportunities to talk about the very issues that these people claim to care for, but none of that is really shown with this.

The reality is that in order to make the most money on a project it has to appeal to someone. I'd argue not all games are made for everyone, but they need to appeal to someone. One of the main issues that keeps getting brought up in this discussion is about who this is supposed to appeal to. And I honestly can't get good answer. The devs seemingly treat all minorities under this blanket as being woke and victimhood. It's almost insulting how much this tries to pander to said groups without even understanding them.

Yet another update: The Head Dev, Dani, had an interview with a blue checkmark. Here's the article.

I'm tempted to take a picture of my house, throw it through the same filter, add the same lazy text box and call it a screenshot of the game. Hell, that might qualify as more effort than what they've got.

"It’s very hard to get out of peoples’ minds that this game isn’t about race when all they see is people of color”
That might have something to do with the devs proudly crowing about how there's no white people. Or the fact that a ludicrous stretch goal that's only there as a joke is saying they'll add a white person in.

So the game might not be 'about' race, in that the characters only talk like they're writing articles for The Root. But it's certainly designed to emphasise that there's only non-whites, and it's disingenuous, if predictable, that they're trying to deny the importance of one of the only reasons the game exists in the first place.
