its a big phone game player. At best its a viable platform for console-to-PC ports. Which a 30 dollar USB controller was fine for.
I know its been out for awhile because of all the dipshits complaining that games designed for PC "aren't Steam Deck compatible". They're asking for PC games to be designed for their big phone/console port handheld, and PC gaming gets fucked one way or another every time some competing platform gets rolled out.
If this thing gets enough popularity its going to make games shittier. PC gamers are all hoping it fails miserably.
If they were asking for more console ports, that'd be fine, but asking for PC games to be designed with their stupid douche handheld is irritating because they're going to get it. Publishers love new platforms and hate PC gamers.

you're paying 400+ dollars for a thing you could have with a mid-tier laptop and a 30 dollar USB controller. keeping some ability to optimize your own shit is the entire point of PC gaming, its why PC gamers are not console gamers and PC games and not console games. You're going to get the lack of self-optimization of a console with the lack of release quality of PC game developers.

Word salad. Its a handheld computer, with the same architecture as an x86 PC. Only a nigger would be confused by a smaller x86 computer and think its a different thing.

I have the official valve dock that i have hooked to my TV. No complaints at all with the official dock. The dock i have on my desktop is a Dell dock that I use for when I work from home. Only complaint is that my Deck will randomly select a monitor as my primary monitor. But i chalk that up to being a janky SteamOS issue.

Have you tried Power Tools & messed with the game settings? I usually lock the most demanding games down to 40 fps & use Power Tools to prevent the CPU from going over a certain clock amount. By doing this your can easily make the system last 3 hours minimum playing something like Witchfire or Witcher 3.

It is pretty underwhelming for an $80 peripheral but at the time I got the official dock I remember some of the aftermarket docks where fucking up peoples batteries. I don't remember which ones or the specifics of it but I distinctly remember looking at it when it arrived and thinking "This is not very impressive but at least it won't fuck up my battery."
Could have been retarded Internet bullshit though. But the dock had done everything I needed it to.

The console itself has been a game changer though. I have been finally able to clear some of my backlog with it. And it's enabled me to actually have time for video games. Where as I used to maybe have 30 minutes in a good day of uninterrupted sit down and play a game time, with this I'm able to steal a few minutes here and there. And therefore actually get to play shit.

Highly recommend for grown people with shit to do.

I was thinking about a Steam Deck a while back. But the performance and battery life turns me off. I got a Switch and that plays a lot of games at 30 fps and the battery life is shit as well. I think it lasts about 2 hours without being plugged into a wall outlet. That's why it's not totally portable. You can only go as far with it as the next outlet. It's fine because I only play it in my recliner. I have a ThinkPad T480 I bought last year, and a gaming PC I can just stream games from Steam onto my laptop and play them anywhere in my house.

If the performance was better, I would probably get one. But I don't need another gaming device I already have a plenty.

I just ordered a Legion Go S Z1 Extreme version, sadly the Steam OS version got delayed until mid June, but i plan to just immedicably replace windows with Steam OS. Kinda like to have a handheld with more performance and a higher refresh screen.

I'll probably get whatever the Steam Deck 2 is in 2027 and hard limit it to 10W, and see how that does. I assume that will get you to 3-4 hours battery life.
 
The battery has never been too much of a problem for me. I mainly use it at home when I’m on the exercise bike and out when I have downtime between work. Two hours is plenty for those instances. On the occasions where I forgot to charge it, I use my lump of a power bank that I keep with me when I go out anyway.

Switch OLED most games last like 8-10 hours. Really stressing stuff its more like 4-5. Been pretty happy with it, huge improvement over the one I got in 2017.

Steam Deck OLED similarly I feel the battery is pretty good as long as you aren't running something high end. I got over 10 hours playing Civ V, seen more like 6 when playing Ace Combat 7, and it only goes below 3h if you're trying to play modern slop.

SteamOS may not support it as it's still make only for very specific hardware. but Windows IoT or Linux Mint should work
