Valve introduces Steam Deck

so will this thing run windows as well as a laptop or will choke to death like those bullshit hp stream windows tablets that came out a decade ago?

dont really care about gameing but im looking for a netbook to take on planes and trips. i know gpd makes a bunch but the cost is either too expensive for what you get or the shoddy qa on the lower end ones (hinge breaking after a month on the pocket 2)

There seems to be some interest among the japanese for the Steam Deck, with a debate whether it is competing against the Switch or PS5.
Overall though many people from these threads are believing that now Playstation is completely over, in addition to how badly the PS5 is doing in Japan according to the sale charts. My favorite thread title that seems to sum up the whole thing very well is this one:
一般人はSwitch、マニアはsteam deck、統失はPS5。しっかり住み分けできたな
"Switch for normal people, Steam Deck for enthusiasts, PS5 for schizos.
I could properly classify them"

The more I think about it, the more it seems the Steam Deck is a means to an end, the hardware is not the important part of it, it is to bring people's attention to the real end goal for Valve which is to make more gamers and developers adopt SteamOS ( and all major Linux distributions ) as a viable alternative to Windows.

Whatever amount of Decks get sold is going to pale in comparison to the number of people getting into PC gaming and installing SteamOS if (and this is a big IF) Valve's claim that most Windows games will work out of the box through Proton by the time the deck releases. This type of development would not limit itself to gaming either, if this translates to productivity applications only available on Windows suddenly being able to run on Linux hassle free that could mean a huge amount of people saying goodbye to Microsoft for good.

So you're saying that it will fail and Valve will abandon it because people want to play video games and not ideas.

No thanks, I use steam for PC games that I can use mouse and keyboard with.
The steam controller was such a huge failure already that if I have to use that with a small screen attached to it.. Euuuugh D:
Besides I got a 2kg weighting gaming laptop already. Also how can it even compete with NinSwitch? Switch has its fanbase because of its first party support.

God fucking dammit I wish I could read & speak japanese. 2ch sounds a fucking wild time when they talk about western news.

It's no different when /pol or /v/ latch on to something.

Snoot Game probably topped anything 2chan ever did. I mean even sneed got listed in the hate symbol register for the Southern Poverty Law center and other grifting organizations.

Half the shit on 2chan are homos talking about all the shit they're cumming to and that they're totally NOT gay. It's honestly the same shit you witness on the english speaking boards.

Ah well that's disappointing. Different language same shit. Japanese aren't that different like they think they are then.

Well how the hell am I supposed to play pinball, Pac-Man, bullet hells, and other vertically-oriented games? Turning it sideways hardly seems a viable option. Sorry but this is a garbage toy for stupid trendy normalfag babies and of no use to the serious elite gamer such as myself. How did Gaybe fuck this up when the WonderSwan got it right over 20 years ago?

For one, the Wonderswan was only released in Japan.

What do you care? Do you own stock in Valve (you don't, because it's privately-owned). What difference does it makes to you who "wins the console war"? Does the number of Switches sold impact the experience of playing on a Deck? Are you afraid devs will stop developing games for PC if the Deck doesn't outsell the Switch?

It really depends as to what is Valve's criteria to consider the Steam Deck a failure. They could very well sell millions of these things and still consider it a failure if most owners end up just installing Windows on it anyways. Again, to me the hardware is nothing special, other companies have already launched to market similar handhelds (GDP, Aya Neo) What may be more important for Valve as a measure of success is seeing far more people adopting Linux and using Proton well beyond the numbers of the install base of the Steam Deck. Plus Valve taking this first step may give incentive to other big name hardware manufactures to develop their own handheld PCs or even work in partnership with Valve to develop their own clones of the Deck, the more offer there is in the market the more affordable and accessible it'll become to the general public.

Let me put it this way, do you really want reddit to feel emboldened or vindicated by anything?
