Valve monetizes mods (With Bethseda Launcher and Open Beta for Modding Released, Possible Return?)

If a mod becomes pay-only then I get the feeling it won't be built upon by others in the community. Another uploader will offer something similar for free and that will become what everyone uses and creates content around.
Smaller mod groups already come together and release their mods as packaged content. I can imagine a working system where, for example, a graphics mod, a mod that adds weapons and armor, and a mod that adds new characters and quests come together and are released together for a cost. Maybe you could have a 'lore friendly' mod package, an 'anime bullshit' mod package, and a 'random assortment of stuff from other games' package.

Actually, that raises another question - a lot of mods build upon or just straight up import stuff from other games. The Guard Armor Replacement mod, for example, uses some retextured Witcher 2 outfits, and I can only imagine the clusterfuck around trying to monetise that.

From r/KotakuInAction:

double post, but it looks like that mod being referenced just got taken down.

I'm curious what would happen if a base mod that is needed for multiple popular mods (such as SkyUI for Skyrim) suddenly decided to just put their mod on Steam and charge.
Well Arthmoor came out in favor of p2p modding, so we'll find out if he decides to put the unofficial patches on there.

However, there are mods out there that are so big and add so much to a game that they function like a mini-expansion in themselves. I have no problem paying for stuff that overhauls or adds an entire level of gameplay to a game but I think in the end it won't matter.

Well, there's been Garry's Mod for years, and it's never been free, but again, it was clearly a standalone product worth buying.

Yup, Was just pointing out that its kinda nice to see him follow through with his word. No the big question is will the other mods that require SKSE and etc will follow through.
Though the best result would be for valve to undo this whole debacle and rework it into something more.... sensible.
Which they won't do. The amount of shit on steam is increasing, Valve has some of the worse customer service in the industry, and they have virtual monopoly power. Why the fuck would they?

Welp, the horror is real, as the creator of Garry's Mod is actually supporting the idea of paid GMod mods.

"There’s a lot of craziness about paid mods, a lot of people who don’t know how they feel. It’s probably no big suprise that I’m all for it. I sold a mod once and everyone was angry that it was happening, until it happened and they got a much better product than they’d have gotten when it was released for free, then they seemed to calm down a bit. It has given me a carreer for 10 years. It’s bought me two houses, a bunch of cars. It’s created a company that has hired 30+ people."

So I'm thinking, I should get that paid workshop bundle, then make a clean install of skyrim and do professional style reviews on all of them. No crazy ENBs or PPS, no photoshop to make them look better, and no giving them a free pass because it was something someone made for free in their spare time because they enjoyed it. Mods are given a lot of leeway because they aren't professionally made and they're free, but when you get paid to do something it becomes professional and at that point they should be held to professional standards. P2P Mods are essentially 3rd party DLC and I feel like they should be treated like it.

Basically, if you expect me to pay for your shit, you had better have your shit together.

I feel you on this. Most of the time big modding projects have trouble just getting their initial aims achieved. So this gives them incentives to just get the baseline goals done and pray for the best. It's almost like Greenlight, but now programs have less work to do.

Then you have mods that are labors of love like Project Brazil in F:NV. If they ever finish the whole mod, it's supposed to be as good, if not better then the paid DLC. I wouldn't mind paying for that, but that's after years of play testing and updating.

Here is a rather large post chesko made on reddit about this "failed experiment", and why he is getting out now. That last little bit about valve fucking him over though with his mod when he tried to pull it makes me feel right bad for the dude.

Also, One of the Nexus bigger ups came into the thread to explain the whole "nexus as a contributer" thing chesko brought up.

Well holy fuck. All the pay mods link to this upon being clicked.

We did it reddit/4chan/tumblr?
