People seem to always have beef with vegans — and scientists say they’ve figured out why.
A new study published in the journal Food Quality and Preference found that your typical carnivore’s hatred of vegans might simply be due to envy.
Researchers from University of Vaasa in Finland wanted to understand why a plant-based diet and the use of meat substitutes are still so frowned upon in Europe.

“The consumption of meat and meat substitutes is a highly charged social phenomenon,” Roosa-Maaria Malila, an author of the study, said in a statement. “According to our research, consumers who prefer plant-based alternatives are perceived as socially different — and not in a good way.”

The team asked 3,600 participants from Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden to give their opinions of a fictional consumer, based on their grocery shopping habits.

Participants were shown three different shopping lists. All lists included the same five staple foods: pasta, bread, apple juice, carrots and bananas — but they varied based on the inclusion or exclusion of animal and plant-based protein products.
One list was for a meat eater, including items such as minced meat, cold cuts and sausages. The “flexible” list had a mix of meat and plant-based items, such as chicken rolls and vegetable sausages. The third list was heavy in meat substitutes, such as vegetable-based dumplings and vegetarian sausages.
The research found that the imaginary shoppers that preferred vegetarian foods were seen as environmentally friendly people who are competent, health-conscious and moral.

However, participants also resented the faux fake meat eaters — bringing up feelings of fear, envy, contempt and anger.
“In our research, we found that people even wanted to act aggressively towards vegetarians or exclude them from social circles,” Malila shared.
The researchers explained that these mixed feelings reflect the “prevailing climate” of understanding the need to minimize meat consumption for environmental reasons.
“Understandably, changing one’s own consumption habits is not so simple. This can be reflected in frustration and channeled through those who are already driving change,” they wrote.

“Of course, the fear of giving up the benefits gained also causes similar feelings, even though a vegetarian diet need not really be a compromise, but the image around it may be perceived as such.”

There’s a range of reasons why people choose not to reach for meat substitutes while grocery shopping, such as price or taste — but according to the study, the main reason seems to be a lack of social acceptability.
“Food is quite a strong part of our social identity. If and when vegetarian food evokes negative feelings, not many people want to risk being associated with it,” Malila explained.
“Belonging to a group is an evolutionary motive. We need acceptance from our fellow human beings.”

So that retarded article from the telegraph lead me to the vegan subreddit and I found this hilarious article. I hope you all enjoy!

I don't understand this envy. Is it supposed to be because the vegans can subsist on zero animal products without a second thought?

Some vegans can be really overbearing about their veganism. The person in your dinner party who orders a veggie burger is not a bother. The person who orders a veggie burger and spends the whole meal sperging about veganism is.

I still don't see it as envy. If you want to try meatless meat go ahead. It was trendy to make Impossible Burger videos during the craze. I don't think anyone cared about who was tasting what. Just don't get a holier than thou attitude after soying out. No one likes that person.

I don't eat a lot of meat. But I have no issue buying tofu or oat milk ice cream because I enjoy it. You can eat a wide variety of foods. In fact, you should. I think that veganism gets its bad rap mainly from the insufferable veggie freaks who go on crazy fruitarian diets and invite everyone over for Thanksgiving and surprise them with tofurkey.

In other words; Eco-nuts and health freaks who think that they are better than everyone else because they have a degree in bullshit?

This statement by itself means nothing. In every group there will be people who are hostile to people not in the group. How does it compares to the attitudes that vegetarians/vegans have towards "meat eaters"?

Are you actually trying to apply the scientific method to research? You fucking bigoted Nazi. You will be the first to the gulags!

Opinions immediately discarded, try asking a country where the people don't look like vegans whether they eat meat or not

It's the same with everything—gluten-free used to be a huge thing (more than today) and most people were so uppity about it, making up fake ailments to explain why they can't eat real bread (there is no such as a "gluten allergy", by the way) and thinking they were healthier than everyone else...but then when it comes to people who don't make a big deal out of it, it's okay.

I was at a dinner with my brother and his friends, and one guy ordered gluten-free bread. Turns out he had a wheat intolerance, and it wasn't a major thing, cross-contamination would do no harm, yet I felt nothing wrong with it. The problem is vegans aren't just going to be the one friend who orders a sandwich where the "meat" is a portabella mushroom or a chunk of seitan...they're going to tell you how they're a better person for it.

That trend made it harder for people with celiac disease to get taken seriously when eating out. Someone with that disease can't even eat something that touched the same surface as gluten unless they want to blow their ass the fuck out.

Pretty much this. Its better to lead by example and make good meals with whole foods and share. Most vegans are in for the fad ive found, subsisting on pre processed meat replacements, though some Ive met are great cooks!
Most people have nothing but respect for vegans and vegetarians who voluntarily restrict their diet because they can't bear to support factory farming. Anyone can understand that. I try to avoid buying pork and bacon for this reason. The problem is vegans aren't in it because they love animals but because they hate humans.

CD sufferers can't even eat gluten-free stuff in restaurants anyway, there's big disclaimers on menus that there WILL be cross-contamination and staff don't have medical training if you start having problems.

So is it eating bugs or going "vegan" that The Cult of Progress wants? 🤔

Can science explain why every vegetarians/vegans feels the need to shove their diet choice into every interaction?
Vegetarian is better than "vegan" because a vegetarian diet can still have egg and dairy.

That said, I do not really hear about vegetarians anymore. It's always "vegans" nowadays.
