People seem to always have beef with vegans — and scientists say they’ve figured out why.
A new study published in the journal Food Quality and Preference found that your typical carnivore’s hatred of vegans might simply be due to envy.
Researchers from University of Vaasa in Finland wanted to understand why a plant-based diet and the use of meat substitutes are still so frowned upon in Europe.

“The consumption of meat and meat substitutes is a highly charged social phenomenon,” Roosa-Maaria Malila, an author of the study, said in a statement. “According to our research, consumers who prefer plant-based alternatives are perceived as socially different — and not in a good way.”

The team asked 3,600 participants from Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden to give their opinions of a fictional consumer, based on their grocery shopping habits.

Participants were shown three different shopping lists. All lists included the same five staple foods: pasta, bread, apple juice, carrots and bananas — but they varied based on the inclusion or exclusion of animal and plant-based protein products.
One list was for a meat eater, including items such as minced meat, cold cuts and sausages. The “flexible” list had a mix of meat and plant-based items, such as chicken rolls and vegetable sausages. The third list was heavy in meat substitutes, such as vegetable-based dumplings and vegetarian sausages.
The research found that the imaginary shoppers that preferred vegetarian foods were seen as environmentally friendly people who are competent, health-conscious and moral.

However, participants also resented the faux fake meat eaters — bringing up feelings of fear, envy, contempt and anger.
“In our research, we found that people even wanted to act aggressively towards vegetarians or exclude them from social circles,” Malila shared.
The researchers explained that these mixed feelings reflect the “prevailing climate” of understanding the need to minimize meat consumption for environmental reasons.
“Understandably, changing one’s own consumption habits is not so simple. This can be reflected in frustration and channeled through those who are already driving change,” they wrote.

“Of course, the fear of giving up the benefits gained also causes similar feelings, even though a vegetarian diet need not really be a compromise, but the image around it may be perceived as such.”

There’s a range of reasons why people choose not to reach for meat substitutes while grocery shopping, such as price or taste — but according to the study, the main reason seems to be a lack of social acceptability.
“Food is quite a strong part of our social identity. If and when vegetarian food evokes negative feelings, not many people want to risk being associated with it,” Malila explained.
“Belonging to a group is an evolutionary motive. We need acceptance from our fellow human beings.”

So that retarded article from the telegraph lead me to the vegan subreddit and I found this hilarious article. I hope you all enjoy!

It's because vegans are smug assholes who believe on a deep level that they're superior to non-vegans. Doesn't matter if you're vegetarian, or eat relatively little animal products, or if you source your animal products from small, relatively humane farms - if you're not a full vegan, then you're inferior to them. Even the "nice" ones who are cordial to your face have a covert contempt for you. They're like certain religious adherents in that way.

Most people have nothing but respect for vegans and vegetarians who voluntarily restrict their diet because they can't bear to support factory farming. Anyone can understand that. I try to avoid buying pork and bacon for this reason. The problem is vegans aren't in it because they love animals but because they hate humans.
I refuse to buy cheap battery farm eggs because I know how inhumane those places are. When I spend a few bucks more for pasture raised it's for the welfare of the chickens, not so I can feel morally superior to someone else

Most men having grown up in a household with a 12 year old/mentally 12 year old "foid" around the house will know the most annoying vegan/vegitarian they will ever meet.
Imagine it, you are out, working, long day, you are tired, but your family waits at home, you smell something delicious at first, you think "yum" and your stomach responds, your mouth waters in anticipation.
And then you are served oven baked root vegetables with fucking vegan "cheese" on top?
Being known to cause localized famine in individual households? 100% Why vegans are hated.

Vegans haven't changed ever since Filthy Frank parodied them.

In fact, being a Vegan is unironically a well known path because they're quite predictable. They hate meat, they end up malnourished, being malnourished fucks with your health including your mental ability and in turn try to spread the retardation around.

Imagine you really like a thing, and it’s good for you, and it’s needed. A thing that every human culture has craved and has an inbuilt drive to obtain (yes every human culture, none, ever, were vegan.)
Now imagine a small subset of your population decides that by wanting that thing you’re bad and they want to stop you obtaining it. The thing you crave, that you know makes your children strong, and when you can’t get it people weaken and sicken.
How do you feel about those people? Clue; not envy. They’re a threat to the tribe.
We are back to our behavioural immune system. Humans have a disgust response to things or behaviours that might harm them, and I’ll bet vegans hit it. And then we ask why yet another paper is out asking us, nay TELLING us we are bad to listen to our basic instincts that have kept us alive as a species for Millenia. Activates the almonds, and not for ‘milk.’
Veganism is a death cult. Be veggie? Fine, no worries there, but veganism is death

I can understand for health reasons. I can understand because of moral values regarding treatment of animals. But like...vegans are incredibly extra.
But then they have a smartphone which requires a bunch of african kids to huff toxic cobalt dust for 12 hours a day.

Didn't think it would require scientists to discover obnoxious holier-than-thou shitheads get hated. There are vegans I don't hate, and its usually because I don't know they're vegan.

There's vegetarian and then there's vegan.....and now common household products and clothing are vegan.

We're reaching a point of self delusion that shouldn't even be possible.

Why the fuck would anyone envy someone who:
  • has to shop around for a restaurant or face a severely limited set of options on what little carve out is given for them?
  • can't taste the delicious richness of fatty animal cuts
  • has to be mindful of supplements cause of self imposed choice restrictions
  • has to watch slaughter porn to refresh the guilt when the burger smells too good
  • is somehow sick with illnesses their 25-30 years older parents have but their similarly aged siblings don't
  • has to be mindful of ingredients
  • can't drink milk
  • what else?
Like, why?

And they have huge penises too.

I can't decided what's more pathetic, presenting this as a real study or thinking people "hate" vegans as opposed to being indifferent save for the pushy ones who try to push their lifestyle down other people's throats. Potentially literally in this case.

Gym nuts, cyclists, conspiracy theorists there's loads that are the same.

That said, I do not really hear about vegetarians anymore. It's always "vegans" nowadays.
That's why vegetarians hate vegans the most. I know a few vegetarians who say that 10-15 years ago it was easy to eat out, as most restaurants offered options like cheese and veg pasta dishes, cheese omelettes, sauces with cream, etc for their vegetarian options. But that's all gone now as few will offer both vegetarian and vegan options, so they only offer vegan, and that's increasingly some sort of ultra processed soy slop.

Most vegan foods are massively ultra processed and full of soy and seed oils. The alternative milks are such a scam too, oat milk is basically pig swill and rapeseed oil, as the oats used to make it tend to be the oat by products that's used for pig feed but now it's soaked first in water that gets used as the foundation for the 'milk' and it gets mixed with oil to make it creamy. And then a batch load of vitamins are added as it has fuck all nutritional value by itself.

People hate them for two reasons. Number one is that they're a bunch of stuck-up-their-own-ass snobs who think they're morally superior to everyone else. Number two is that they're just flat-out wrong. The human body literally requires meat to function properly. Don't believe me? Just ask all those vegans who tried to climb mountains and ended up dying as a result, or the ones who flat-out perished from malnutrition.

The fact that the article claims that we hate them because we're "jealous" only serves to prove point number one.
