Vegans are hated by meat-eaters, and scientists claim to know the reason behind the ‘highly charged’ debate

People seem to always have beef with vegans — and scientists say they’ve figured out why.
A new study published in the journal Food Quality and Preference found that your typical carnivore’s hatred of vegans might simply be due to envy.
Researchers from University of Vaasa in Finland wanted to understand why a plant-based diet and the use of meat substitutes are still so frowned upon in Europe.

“The consumption of meat and meat substitutes is a highly charged social phenomenon,” Roosa-Maaria Malila, an author of the study, said in a statement. “According to our research, consumers who prefer plant-based alternatives are perceived as socially different — and not in a good way.”

The team asked 3,600 participants from Finland, the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden to give their opinions of a fictional consumer, based on their grocery shopping habits.

Participants were shown three different shopping lists. All lists included the same five staple foods: pasta, bread, apple juice, carrots and bananas — but they varied based on the inclusion or exclusion of animal and plant-based protein products.
One list was for a meat eater, including items such as minced meat, cold cuts and sausages. The “flexible” list had a mix of meat and plant-based items, such as chicken rolls and vegetable sausages. The third list was heavy in meat substitutes, such as vegetable-based dumplings and vegetarian sausages.
The research found that the imaginary shoppers that preferred vegetarian foods were seen as environmentally friendly people who are competent, health-conscious and moral.

However, participants also resented the faux fake meat eaters — bringing up feelings of fear, envy, contempt and anger.
“In our research, we found that people even wanted to act aggressively towards vegetarians or exclude them from social circles,” Malila shared.
The researchers explained that these mixed feelings reflect the “prevailing climate” of understanding the need to minimize meat consumption for environmental reasons.
“Understandably, changing one’s own consumption habits is not so simple. This can be reflected in frustration and channeled through those who are already driving change,” they wrote.

“Of course, the fear of giving up the benefits gained also causes similar feelings, even though a vegetarian diet need not really be a compromise, but the image around it may be perceived as such.”

There’s a range of reasons why people choose not to reach for meat substitutes while grocery shopping, such as price or taste — but according to the study, the main reason seems to be a lack of social acceptability.
“Food is quite a strong part of our social identity. If and when vegetarian food evokes negative feelings, not many people want to risk being associated with it,” Malila explained.
“Belonging to a group is an evolutionary motive. We need acceptance from our fellow human beings.”

So that retarded article from the telegraph lead me to the vegan subreddit and I found this hilarious article. I hope you all enjoy!

This is delusional, because it doesn't control for the most important things: the diet of the surveyors.

Like, vegans are usually vegan because they believe it's a moral thing to do. So obviously they are going to rate other vegans highly and non-vegans poorly. This doesn't control for that by seperating the various diet groups out, which is crucially important because the primary factor people claim they don't like vegans for is how judgmental they are.

Look at this shit.

None of these stats go below 2.75, and none of them go above four. So the differences are extremely mild at best. This is entirely consistent with a test consisting of a largely apathetic general populace and a handful of nagging vegans.

Sounds plausible. Or not, as the case may be.

The research found that the imaginary shoppers that preferred vegetarian foods were seen as environmentally friendly people who are competent, health-conscious and moral.

Are Europeans seriously dumb enough to believe this? Because that's about the last 3 words I'd use to describe Vegans. Let me propose 3 words: Malnutrition, shrill, obnoxious. What would your 3 words be, Kiwi Farms?

Researchers from University of Vaasa in Finland wanted to understand why a plant-based diet and the use of meat substitutes are still so frowned upon in Europe.

Is it because they taste like ass and have fucked-up textures?

99% of vegans I see are activists and want to force others to consume less animal productsor even become vegan. Or try to lobby goverments to make laws in their favour. Or promote dubious studies that She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named think are true. (I am talking about how a small amount of red meat causes colon cancer. It has been proven that the risk is very small, that there is little difference between vegans or normal people getting colon cancer)

Vegetarians are more moderate, but still a majority of them want to impose to others to become more like them.

TOTAL VEGAN DEATH.

Edit: Forgot to mention I am not even a heavy meat eater, but I consume a lot of dairy and egg containing products. But I am triggered when activists try to tell me I am a bad person for consuming milk or non vegan pastry or enjoying BBQs.

People dislike vegans because there's a close to 100% they would like to force their eating disorder on the rest of humanity. Vegans are not dissimilar from trannies in that they can't just do their thing and leave you alone, you ( and your children, especially your children ) need to participate, at gunpoint if need be.

Idk if this article is actually faithful to the researchers but it sounds pretty bs. They’re basically just saying “oh well everybody knows they should be vegan, they’re just too scared to make the change so they resent people who have”. So not true.

In fact, people impose their dietary restrictions on everybody around them. You always have to cater to the lowest common denominator. Nowadays any catered lunch has to consider the office vegetarian, the office coeliacs, and the office lactose intolerant. The more main stream veganism becomes the more difficult eating meat becomes. It can get to the point where companies who only provide a single option (e.g. for a plane meal) won’t provide meat because sufficiently enough people don’t eat it.

The only good vegan I've ever met wouldn't even be considered vegan by the, "community" because he will flat out eat meat. I can respect his choice to abstain the vast majority of the time since he doesn't have the finances to blow on locally raised, well cared for, humanly slaughtered meat.

But when I humanely culled that problem copperhead while he was over visiting and tossed it on the grill, we each had ourselves some copperhead back strap. He understood that the animal lived a natural life and that a venomous snake living in my garage had to go. He's also not so retarded as to expect me to put myself in danger of a $30,000 hospital bill trying to transport a live and angry venomous snake to an area where it won't endanger my family. It's not about moral grandstanding for him, he simply hates what modern livestock farming entails and frankly, I'm with him on that.

Every other vegan I've met has been the moral grandstanding type and I hope they enjoy prison malnutrition.

Vegans being envious of normal people is why ice cream has gone to complete shit.

The laws about what can legally be called ice cream were changed because politicians had vegan teen daughters who wouldn't shut the fuck up, resulting in vegetable oil based frozen inedible garbage being able to market itself as Vegan Ice Cream.

The food industry took this a green light to market frozen vegetable oil as legit ice cream and save a few bob, and the results were worse than what has become of chocolate. You weren't going mad, the rock solid unpleasant texture and plasticky bubblegum aftertaste is real, it's cheap rapeseed oil masquerading as ice cream.

Now you have to bring a magnifying glass with you to the frozen aisle and pinpoint Dairy Ice Cream to get the proper stuff, good fucking luck finding the two lines in among all the rubbish.

Why do "vegans" think it's bad to even eat egg and dairy? One doesn't have to kill to get those. And there can be egg and dairy that comes from animals in better conditions.
Because supporting animal products = supporting animals being used by humans in any way, shape or form. And vegans don't want that happening.

This is why vegetarians are seen as well-rounded people making moral choices, and vegans are seen as insufferable twats. By the very nature of declaring themselves a vegan, they are declaring there's no compromise on that point.

I understand being vegan or at least vegetarian.

I don't want animals to suffer.
Animals suffer through all agriculture. Even if your definition of animal doesn't extend to insects and spiders, which are killed in vast, vast quantities in the production of all plant based foods, what do you think happens to all the mice, voles, shrews, hedgehogs, etc that live in the wheat field when the combine harvester rolls through? Rabbits and hares also die in non-insignificant numbers, especially the young ones. As do ground nesting birds. Occasionally even badgers. It's pretty horrible, tbh.

If you really, really wanted to minimise the amount of animals that die for your food, going carnivore and eating entire large animals like cows and deer, as in eating the whole thing the offal, the bone marrow, any edible skin and fat. That would get an average adult through well over a year of food, for just one animal life. That sounds like just as crappy a way to live as veganism does to me, to be honest and few people following a carnivore diet are eating whole animals.

It's not nice, but ultimately we just have to come to terms with the fact that large numbers of animals will die for our food no matter what diet we follow. I don't like it, but I accept it. So my priority is to aim to follow a diet that for the most part is 80% really good for me and 20% tasty crap that brings me pleasure. I aim to avoid anything that I know was deliberately cruel to living creatures in its production, but at the end of the day, my health and my families health is my main concern.

Next up, science discovers why normal people hate pedophiles... Envy!

Narcissists secretly believe that everyone envies them, when in reality narcissists are a bunch of sanctimonious, bloviating, arrogant, self righteous, fuck wits whom most people when they get to know them, learn to hate.

You are a normal person. You eat meat. You meet a vegan. If it isn't the first or second they tell you about themselves, it eventually comes up when you have a meal, as most people are social and enjoy eating together. Most food doesn't work for a vegan. Have one at a family function, they will turn their nose up at 90% of the food served and demand a special plate to accommodate their moral preference. Go to an ordinary restaurant. The vegan will complain about the sparsity of the vegan choices on the menu. You have to go to one of their restaurants instead where the food sucks and is expensive.

Of course vegans think they are morally above everyone else. That's why they do it and constantly point out this great moral sacrifice they made for the good of the animals and the environment. You must applaud them for it. They also tell you how much healthier they are than you for their diet choice even their skin and hair speaks otherwise. They will tell you they hope that someday you'll see the light and become just like them, but in reality you know if you became vegan they would jump on another moral cause against something you do every day as they get off on looking down upon you.

Vegans thinking that normal people envy them is complete arrogance. No, we hate you mother fuckers because you constantly berate everyone else for having a normal diet, turn down or complain about everyone else's hospitality, most people hate being around you and have to walk on eggshells in your presence.

Some ex-vegans make the flip, then turn into a carnivore diet only nutcase and refuse to eat anything other than meat and dairy. No carbs, veggies, or fruits. Instead of complaining about the steak at the family cookout, they'll complain about the baked potato, beans and the asparagus being poison and unnatural and tell everyone who will listen. All they did was change to a different eating disorder.
