A vehicle has exploded on a bridge that connects the US and Canada near the Niagara Falls, according to the FBI.

The incident took place on the Rainbow Bridge one day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"As this situation is fluid, this is all we can say at this time," the FBI said in a statement.

According to the city of Niagara Falls, the incident involved a vehicle that was "coming into" the US.

The incident took place just around 11:30 local time (16:30GMT).

A senior law enforcement official told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that the car was coming from Canada and crashed into a pylon at a high rate of speed. Canadian officials said that has not been confirmed.

The investigation is being headed by the FBI.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to CBS, also said it is too early to say what caused the vehicle to explode.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X, formerly Twitter that "state agencies are on site and ready to assist" in the federal investigation.

"I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available," she added.

The bridge connects Ontario with New York and links the cities of Niagara Falls, US with Niagara Falls, Canada.

In addition to the Rainbow Bridge, the incident has led to the closure of three other international border crossings in the region.

The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge are also closed in both directions, officials say.

Witnesses told the Niagara Gazette newspaper that they heard what sounded like an explosion and a cloud of smoke shortly before police arrived.

"We heard something smash," one witness said. "We saw fire and big, black smoke."

Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc told journalists in Ottawa that "we are working closely with American counterparts".

"This is a rapidly changing situation," he added.

Security officials at the Buffalo airport, located 20 miles (32km) from the bridge, announced that they were increasing security checks due to the incident.

"Cars coming into the Buffalo airport will undergo security checks and travelers can expect additional screenings," airport security officials said, adding that both the Buffalo and Niagara Falls airports "are fully operational".

There's been accidents and vehicle fires especially at Lewiston, but they didn't close all 4 Western New York crossings. Snackbar or an abudance of holiday caution.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was nothing more than the average vehicle fire that culminated in an explosion with no sort of malice or nefarious intent behind it.

The media is so hellbent to spin a narrative these days, they can take something as ordinary as paint drying and make it sound like something so scary people need to stand up to oppose it.
It blew up in secondary screening though. That’s where you go because you failed regular screening and they have questions.

It’s the most suspicious possible place to have an unrelated car explode.

CCTV footage of the boom:

And an interview with an eyewitness:

Claims the car was coming from the US and hauling ass.
Looking at the footage and listening to the Eyewitness either some druggie sped and crashed his EV or some retard made a petrol VBIED that won't do anything other than make a Hollywood explosion and kill the occupant in the car.

Someone check to see if Mario and the gang alright.

Terrorist attack is multiples, sometimes. I wonder if there would be another attack later. If this was an attempted attack.
Could be that the terrorist got flagged at screening and decided to explode themselves.
or just a regular car fire.

Ron Rienas, general manager of the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, told the American ABC News that all four bridges linking the US and Canada over the Niagara River had now been closed.

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said she would be travelling to the nearby city of Buffalo.

“At my direction, the New York State Police is actively working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to monitor all points of entry to New York.

“I am travelling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available.”

The Premier of the Canadian province of Ontario Doug Ford said: “Our provincial law enforcement is actively engaged in assessing the situation”.

Based on it being the day before Thanksgiving and in Northern New York/Ontario I am like 95 percent certain its butthurt indians. And I'm not joking either.
"ser HELO i am inside US GOVERNMENT COMPIUTER and if yu do not allow TRASH DISPOSAL of separatist sikhs I will personaly SHIT on bridge between yuo and Kenada"

Godless heathens.
You're not looking at it objectively - with canadas turkey day being in october it means americans can spend a day in canada in october and eat a bunch of turkey and then go back to the US and do it again a month later. You can exploit it for maximum turkey as well - start in halifax and eat as much turkey as possible 4 hours after midnight and then fly to vancouver the same day and do the same and get a as soon as the day rolls over to midnight on the west coast

You can stuff yourself more than the turkey you're eating multiple times just exploit the system - its the american way

Only problem with that theory is they're actively looking for a second person involved in the explosion so how does that work if its just a random vehicle fire. It would also be a hell of a coincidental place to have it happen. I mean right at a checkpoint? Either its some kind of badly planned attack or the driver has some very awkwardly bad luck and is going to spend the rest of his life having some real difficult times at border crossings and customs

If anything this sounds like somebody trying to pull off a holiday bombing who didn't know how to build a bomb properly and ended up making one that didn't do what he intended it to
