A vehicle has exploded on a bridge that connects the US and Canada near the Niagara Falls, according to the FBI.

The incident took place on the Rainbow Bridge one day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"As this situation is fluid, this is all we can say at this time," the FBI said in a statement.

According to the city of Niagara Falls, the incident involved a vehicle that was "coming into" the US.

The incident took place just around 11:30 local time (16:30GMT).

A senior law enforcement official told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that the car was coming from Canada and crashed into a pylon at a high rate of speed. Canadian officials said that has not been confirmed.

The investigation is being headed by the FBI.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to CBS, also said it is too early to say what caused the vehicle to explode.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X, formerly Twitter that "state agencies are on site and ready to assist" in the federal investigation.

"I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available," she added.

The bridge connects Ontario with New York and links the cities of Niagara Falls, US with Niagara Falls, Canada.

In addition to the Rainbow Bridge, the incident has led to the closure of three other international border crossings in the region.

The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge are also closed in both directions, officials say.

Witnesses told the Niagara Gazette newspaper that they heard what sounded like an explosion and a cloud of smoke shortly before police arrived.

"We heard something smash," one witness said. "We saw fire and big, black smoke."

Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc told journalists in Ottawa that "we are working closely with American counterparts".

"This is a rapidly changing situation," he added.

Security officials at the Buffalo airport, located 20 miles (32km) from the bridge, announced that they were increasing security checks due to the incident.

"Cars coming into the Buffalo airport will undergo security checks and travelers can expect additional screenings," airport security officials said, adding that both the Buffalo and Niagara Falls airports "are fully operational".

The fact the vehicle is split in half in these photos tells me something fucking weird happened here. Regular crashes and engine fires don't split the car like that, and Lithium batteries will gladly burn, but don't tend to hurl pieces around like that - the punctured side turns into a massive flamethrower and burns through.

I really want to know what the vehicle was carrying now. You don't usually move the sort of stuff that'd blow out and eat through a car like that in a box van like that.

So looking at the street view, the guy lost control on the small turn going towards the tolls, actually drove onto the median, creating a little ramp that hopped him over the black fence around the inspection area and smashing into the empty guard post.

If the guy really was going 100mph on Niagara St turning onto Main Street (which connects to the bridge) I don't see why he wouldn't just smash through the outbound gate if the inspections area was the target. Could be he was going to blow at the Duty Free/toll area, possibly damaging or collapsing the offices that go over the toll booths but lost control.

Yeah, given the video of the car in motion and the general placement of everything, he definitely was booking it for the main gate, which would definitely have a good few people at minimum (both guards and civilians) as well as potentially fuck up a major international border crossing right before one of the biggest travel days of the year and I mean right before.

Plus, given the way the car was torn apart suggests ground zero with respect to the car was the backseat floor. If your objective was to kill people and deliver the biggest boom, that would have been the place since the only thing between there and the outside is fairly thin body shell and doors.

Not advocating anything, just musing. Simmer down, feds.

I wonder why low-rent terrorists don't attack infrastructure more often. Steal a WalMart semi loaded with chink shit, drive halfway across the Golden Gate Bridge, park it sideways so it blocks four lanes, set it on fire, and walk away. You'll snarl traffic for DAYS.

Get two terrorists, steal two trucks, and put the second one on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge.

Get three terrorists, steal three trucks, and put the third on the lower deck of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

With the backed up civilian traffic, it would be a lot of work to get a fire truck out there, and I don't know if the bridges have fire hydrants so they might need to take all their fire suppression chemicals with them.

You could wreak a shitton of havoc for very little effort and with very few people.
To tinfoil hat a bit, maybe those are the ones the feds do put a stop to, the stuff we see are the ones they let through.

Both, we have been importing terrorist for decades ( our far left party leader is barred from India and the US for the kalistanni air india bombing, AND is the one keeping turdo minority in power ) and we have multiple enclave of different race recreating their shitholes in canada . Brampton is 95% brown indians, pakis etc and the entire province of """"british"""" Columbia is chinese
"having borders and a homogenous people is racist" - the NDP

I could see that. But wouldn't there be a better target in the city? Like why risk trying to bomb a border crossing and not people out shopping at stores for the holidays.

I mean, even with it missing the target, and basically only destroying an empty inspections booth, Trudeau closed 4 bridges, other border crossings are going to be far more uptight, and slow things down, which will include airports. Right before American Thanksgiving, the busiest traveling time in the year IIRC.

People out shopping would happen around Black Friday, and if these guys were visa holders (and not green card/US citizens), they'd have a much harder time getting access to a gun. Plus, a mass shooting in the US isn't exactly rare, so killing X at a WalMart or something wouldn't be as shocking as a car bomb at a border.
