A vehicle has exploded on a bridge that connects the US and Canada near the Niagara Falls, according to the FBI.

The incident took place on the Rainbow Bridge one day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"As this situation is fluid, this is all we can say at this time," the FBI said in a statement.

According to the city of Niagara Falls, the incident involved a vehicle that was "coming into" the US.

The incident took place just around 11:30 local time (16:30GMT).

A senior law enforcement official told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that the car was coming from Canada and crashed into a pylon at a high rate of speed. Canadian officials said that has not been confirmed.

The investigation is being headed by the FBI.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to CBS, also said it is too early to say what caused the vehicle to explode.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X, formerly Twitter that "state agencies are on site and ready to assist" in the federal investigation.

"I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available," she added.

The bridge connects Ontario with New York and links the cities of Niagara Falls, US with Niagara Falls, Canada.

In addition to the Rainbow Bridge, the incident has led to the closure of three other international border crossings in the region.

The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge are also closed in both directions, officials say.

Witnesses told the Niagara Gazette newspaper that they heard what sounded like an explosion and a cloud of smoke shortly before police arrived.

"We heard something smash," one witness said. "We saw fire and big, black smoke."

Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc told journalists in Ottawa that "we are working closely with American counterparts".

"This is a rapidly changing situation," he added.

Security officials at the Buffalo airport, located 20 miles (32km) from the bridge, announced that they were increasing security checks due to the incident.

"Cars coming into the Buffalo airport will undergo security checks and travelers can expect additional screenings," airport security officials said, adding that both the Buffalo and Niagara Falls airports "are fully operational".

I dunno, this seems more like a retard than a terrorist. Who the fuck bombs a border post like this? There was hardly anyone there and even trashing the whole place just means they close it long enough to get the crap off the road and then set up something temporary to keep getting people through.

It makes no sense until you realize this retard just dominated the news cycle. If something more interesting was happening in, say, Gaza right now(where there is a ceasefire currently, supposedly), nobody would be the wiser.

So, this is rather odd. Looking at that video, it's almost identical to what happened in my parent's town earlier this year. Some woman ran her SUV through main street at about 140mph, rammed head-on into a concrete pillar under a grain silo in the middle of town, and turned into a cloud of vapor and exploding gasoline. There's still a burn mark running up the silo, fifty feet high.

She wasn't from around here, was never publicly identified, there was basically nothing left of the car or the pillar. And I never heard another word about it on the news. But it sounds and looked eerily similar to this. The local sheriff (who my father knows personally) speculated it might've been suicide, but the cops couldn't really determine any cause or rationale behind it one way or the other. Might've been she died while driving and her foot just pushed the accelerator down as she entered town. It's a very long, straight road leading into town from that direction, so who knows?

An Iranian Passport somehow survived the explosion; just like the passports that survived the 9/11 attack. Because shit like jet fuel, comp b, c4, pbxn-109, and other sources of fun are strong enough to demolish buildings and vehicles, but lack that oomph to handle paper.
Pretty obvious the heebs are trying to whip their golem back into shape for another Forever War.

Okay, which one of you was this?

Imagine you're waiting to cross the bridge and you hear a doppler effect of "Fuuuuuccckkkk Yeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh" followed by an explosion.
That's because any sort of professional knows to leave shit at home, or the hotel, or whatever you're using as a room. It's worse when there's a massive fucking explosion and somehow it always has your full dox on it, while everything around it is burned to the ground.
I'm pretty sure its possible paper items can be expelled by the force of the explosion or pressure from something like a backdraft. Like the guy that set himself on fire (Chloe Segal?). His suicide letter was blown away by the ignition of the fire.

Yea now that I've seen the fucking flight of the car in the prior twitter clip, the whole "ripped it half" aspect of it makes perfect sense - In so far as anything involving automobiles being promoted to areomobiles can be called sensible.

Heart attack or stroke behind the wheel or suicide by grain silo.
Still weird as shit though. Be careful out there.

From the New York Times:

"Mr. Restaino said in an interview that investigators had confirmed there were two occupants, a man and a woman, who were believed to be a couple in their late 40s or early 50s. Investigators believe they may have been coming from the nearby Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, though their destination was unclear, he said."

This is the only thing in the article that hasn't been mentioned here.

Plus, a mass shooting in the US isn't exactly rare, so killing X at a WalMart or something wouldn't be as shocking as a car bomb at a border.
And considering who shops at WalMart the chances of someone or someones returning fire is significantly greater than zero. There's better places to do a shooting spree at.

Welp, we can't write off it being a vehicular murder-suicide from a pissed-off husband, then.

Lucky she didn't trigger a silo dust explosion
