Vehicle explodes on bridge between US and Canada

A vehicle has exploded on a bridge that connects the US and Canada near the Niagara Falls, according to the FBI.

The incident took place on the Rainbow Bridge one day before the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

"As this situation is fluid, this is all we can say at this time," the FBI said in a statement.

According to the city of Niagara Falls, the incident involved a vehicle that was "coming into" the US.

The incident took place just around 11:30 local time (16:30GMT).

A senior law enforcement official told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that the car was coming from Canada and crashed into a pylon at a high rate of speed. Canadian officials said that has not been confirmed.

The investigation is being headed by the FBI.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to CBS, also said it is too early to say what caused the vehicle to explode.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X, formerly Twitter that "state agencies are on site and ready to assist" in the federal investigation.

"I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will update New Yorkers when more information becomes available," she added.

The bridge connects Ontario with New York and links the cities of Niagara Falls, US with Niagara Falls, Canada.

In addition to the Rainbow Bridge, the incident has led to the closure of three other international border crossings in the region.

The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge are also closed in both directions, officials say.

Witnesses told the Niagara Gazette newspaper that they heard what sounded like an explosion and a cloud of smoke shortly before police arrived.

"We heard something smash," one witness said. "We saw fire and big, black smoke."

Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic Leblanc told journalists in Ottawa that "we are working closely with American counterparts".

"This is a rapidly changing situation," he added.

Security officials at the Buffalo airport, located 20 miles (32km) from the bridge, announced that they were increasing security checks due to the incident.

"Cars coming into the Buffalo airport will undergo security checks and travelers can expect additional screenings," airport security officials said, adding that both the Buffalo and Niagara Falls airports "are fully operational".

That's because any sort of professional knows to leave shit at home, or the hotel, or whatever you're using as a room. It's worse when there's a massive fucking explosion and somehow it always has your full dox on it, while everything around it is burned to the ground.

2 dead after vehicle explodes at Rainbow Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, official says​

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — A vehicle speeding toward a U.S.-Canada bridge from the American side crashed and exploded at a checkpoint in Niagara Falls on Wednesday, leaving two people dead and prompting the closing of four border crossings in the area, authorities said.

There was no immediate information on the cause of the incident, but it raised concerns on both sides of the border. The White House said President Joe Biden was “closely following developments,” and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said officials were “taking this extraordinarily seriously.”

“This is obviously a very serious situation in Niagara Falls,” Trudeau said in Parliament before excusing himself from Question Period in the House of Commons to be briefed further.

Atrocity based Terrorists don't sabotage logistics because they benefit from them. With a foreign group it's easy to get away with attacking America especially if you feed false Intel to the Americans that say where civilians are is our secret underground training camp. After all you can't sneak in bombs into the enemies capitol if you can't get trucks into the enemies capitol.

Something like that is more effective for direct action and general strike induced shutdowns. if anything this would be a great first action if there was any organized resistance against said US government domestically speaking. As you could create near casualty free terror attacks that inconvenience the logistics of everyone. This could also be very useful if you want to create autonomous zones as well too.

It's been a while since I've been to Niagara, but I'm guessing this gate is open while the border is operating. If he wanted to hit the customs inspection building, he could have driven through here and straight into the inspection area to blow.

Still thinking the guy lost control like a retard and hit the median too fast, which acted like a ramp and sent the idiot flying. Still hard to tell if he intended to hit the US side of the bridge, or try to slip into Canada.

Playing Devil's advocate, but maybe the whole idea was for a document like a passport to be consumed in the resulting explosion/fire. It couldn't be destroyed beforehand because it was possibly part of the cover ("we're going to the US" or something) and like others are saying, what are the chances that a small bundle of papers survives something exploding?

Thing is, what determines survivability of anything is entirely dependent on how things go in the explosion itself. Unless the passport was strapped directly to this theoretical bomb, it could have been shielded from the blast by a car seat or something and not been hit by any flying shrapnel if there was any, leaving it perfectly intact.

EDIT: More seriously, it also doesn't rule out this wasn't terrorism. Not associated with any major group but it's not like these kinds of independent attacks are unheard of, like the failed car bombing in New York.

I've often thought of that too, except it being the ultimate cry for help suicide to ruin 100000 people's vacations by doing it on the Ceasapeake Bay Bridge on a Friday night.

Not me of course, somebody else.

Let's just state the presumed obvious. Someone was trying to escape across the boarder. Had extra questioning. Panicked and floored it. Could be drugs. Could be warrants for their arrest. Could be fake IDs. Maybe their was something extra flammable in the car. Maybe it was just the gas tank.

Even if the people in the car were hoping to one be terrorists, the boarder crossing was not an intended target.
