The dumbest part of this is that their jobs aren't even strictly being replaced, anyway. People will always want something "with a human touch" and such jobs only increase in price as they become "premium" or "artisan", even if you could perform the same task with a tool quicker and easier.

A typical XML export of the current version only of a page is likely 3KB or thereabouts. It's a tiny little snippet of pure text. It has to be generated but that is very light - a fairly trivial DB read and a sliver of PHP. I don't know what rate requests from ChatGPT or whatever were coming in but it's not going to be comparable to a DDoS attack.

I agree that it's probably fine, although the not-trooned out wiki maintainers of other places had reported similar frustrations. I think it's not actually serving the pages that's hard but the fact that you're essentially getting flooded with massive amounts of requests suddenly and quickly when the GPT bots find the website. That's why I think in XKeeper's case he's got a valid reason, but decides to dement and twist it to retarded amounts because that's his real unpaid full time job.

I'm not even a good artist and I'm not concerned. If you want real art made by real people, you know where to find them. Honestly I think the only thing AI image generation will really end up working to solve is... mocking up ideas. As a fun novel thing to get ideas it's actually pretty fun about that. But using it as an actual way to just do an artist's job without the artists? Nah, you're not going far with that.

In less-autistic vidya archival news, there's an ongoing fundraiser for acquiring a couple hundred (~300) ds/3ds cartridges that SEGA had previously thrown out into e-waste by Prototopia/ObscureGamers and the London-based Video Game Preservation Museum (London-based but no physical presence yet). The cost they were being charged per-cartridge is 200 GBP, so it's a 61k pound effort.

This fundraiser is being held by Video Game Preservation Museum CIC on behalf of the video game community.

Why we're raising money

1, The fundraiser is an attempt to preserve roughly 300 SEGA carts from being lost/hoarded.


2, The total cost is £61,000 (£200/cart).


3, Donators who donate £200 or more will be offered a random cart with confirmed data.

Donators who have donated £1000 or more will be allowed to choose a cart of their own choosing.

Shipping costs will be calculated per donator, and you will be given two weeks to pay, otherwise carts will be offered to the the next donator. This time limit is on a per donator basis and can be extended if requested.


All carts will be dumped prior to shipping.


4, Any carts not taken by donators, will be resold to attempt saving consoles, and other lots. A couple of each type of cart will also be donated to VGPM for use at exhibits and events.


5, We have 2 months to fundraise this in total. We might be able to extend if the sellers are happy with another part down payment, but I think they want this one and done.


If the fundraiser goal is not met, a full refund will be given upon request. Any unclaimed funds will be donated towards other lots.


6, We have chosen to use GoodHub for the main fundraiser, but have backup donation links with Ko-Fi and GoFundMe. If you donate via Goodhub, if you're a UK based tax payer we can claim Gift Aid. Meaning if you donated say £100, we would instead get £125, we have adjusted the total to reflect processing fee's charged.

Fortunately, they have met their goal.

Sonic autism is a powerful motivator and fundraising tactic.


Although the GFM looks like it's dead, their main fundraising methods have been the UK-based GoodHub donation platform and Ko-Fi.

I can understand the ethical problems with AI art, but using ChatGPT to, say, generate a summary of something that happens to incorporate information from TCRF is perfectly harmless as long as it’s properly attributed.
