Are videogames for children?

In the home stretch of Tales of Xillia and holy hell does every character in this game suck. It was a little dumb at first but the longer I've played the more I've come to hate them all. The other JRPGs I've been playing have spoiled me for good writing, but I usually enjoy Tales games as sort of generic fun JRPGs and this game has just dropped the ball at every opportunity. I'm forcing myself to finish it but man, I don't know what they were thinking.
Xilia and Zestiria are terrible games saved only by having sequels that are (at least for me) some of the best Tales has to offer. At least I hope you chose the male protagonist side, because the female one literally skips the last third of the game.

I have never played that game, can you go more in detail why they suck?
I played as Jude, the guy, because the female protagonist has less personality than a plank of wood. His whole thing is that he's a young, naïve idealist. This is fine at first, but becomes retarded when the same party member (Alvin) has betrayed us for the 8th time, including shooting your childhood friend in the back.

The female protagonist is Milla, who's got no personality and spent my whole game bitching that I never used her in combat. She kind of starts to have an arc in that she goes from being robotic and emotionless to more human, but then keeps disappearing from the plot (because they hide parts of the story behind who you pick to encourage replaying it and repeatedly split the party up) and by the end has really not changed at all outside of "friends are cool I guess".

Elize is a 12 year old and the only one to wonder why we keep inviting the traitor back every time. Unfortunately she's also a child character in a video game so she's just generally annoying and her ending was unsatisfying.

Alvin is a spy who betrays the party more times than I remember but is welcomed backed shortly after every single time with next to no consequences. They try to paint him as tortured but it just comes off as if they weren't sure what they wanted to do with him and his motivations are never clear. Apparently there was a whole novel written that fleshed out his character but none of that made it into the game so it doesn't matter and I was yelling at my screen every time Jude would say "I trust you, I know you won't fuck us again".

Rowen is an old man spellcaster and probably the only character that didn't actively piss me off. He was okay.

Leia is Jude's childhood friend and is the stereotypical tomboyish archetype but outside of obviously having a crush on Jude she has no real reason to be involved in the story and barely affects it with her presence at all. Her part of the ending amounts to "after we beat the big bad I became a waitress". That's all.

By the time Alvin had betrayed me for the 50th time I was just rushing to finish the game and the final stretch was lazy, unfinished and boring. For a franchise known for its cool final dungeons it was a short, boring wet fart. The ending was unsatisfying. Not even the combat made up for it because they decided difficulty = giving bosses super armor and near impossible to react to counter attacks if you hit them too much. It's easily down there in the bottom 3 of the franchise for me.

I laughed when Milla reappeared at the end of the game and nobody told her that Alvin had tried to murder them while she was gone.

I hear that Xillia 2 butchers the characters from 1 and basically makes a lot of their struggles pointless after the fact which sounds frustrating to me. I do like the way the protagonist looks vs. Jude, and I've heard it's a mechanically better game despite reusing tons of assets from 1, and I plan to play it eventually. I agree with Zestiria and Berseria though, I couldn't even finish Zestiria. The combat and characters were just so awful.

For me the gold standards for the franchise are Abyss, Destiny 2 Remake, Rebirth, Vesperia and Berseria.

I'm probably late, but apparently Tencent bought a director seat on SQUAD. This concerns players (and Redditors) as the new director has experience on profiting F2P mobile games will now take control on the game development.

Bonus: SQUAD will go full Fortnite in future.

No thanks, Tencent!

Fucking hell. I love Squad and don't want to see it killed this way. There really aren't any games out there that can replace it for me.

I don't know where else to look/ask. Youtuber grimbeard. Long, imo well-made videos about older/more obscure videogames.

As per my typical Sunday I decided to rot irl on my couch and binged some of his stuff, but as most people here can probably understand, I'm very wary of new youtubers. Are they a tranny, or tranny adjacent? Both is usually very likely. And both is, at this point, inacceptable to me.

So far, he seems to be a Goth, which I could deal with. But he dropped the word "transphobe" (example: Richard Dawkins is one) a bit too often in his videos and from his style I couldn't tell if hes being sarcastic or serious when he said it. So far I found one tweet congratulating LRG for firing this one chick. https://web.archive.org/web/20230122184420/https://twitter.com/grimebeard/status/1611627275434487808

Which is why I'm now leaning towards tranny adjacent retard and have to cease supporting him via sub and views. Which sucks. As I wrote before, trannies really destroy everything I enjoy. If not themselves, then by association.

If anyone knows about him, maybe you can inform me if he is actually cringe or if that was his only bad take and he is usually "normal".

A further casual scroll through his Twitter aligns pretty well with your impression. I remember getting a video of his recommended and coming to the same conclusion pretty quickly. He's not exactly covert about his beliefs.

I watched some of his initial game videos and he always had these weird first-person cut in skits with ghosts and talking to yourself about how broken-hearted you are. He's definitely a cringe emo trying to cover up how horny and lonely he is with vaguely leftist beliefs so he can land the manic pixiecut dream girl who smiles at him when he orders starbucks every morning.

Nope.

I was looking over an old video game forum I used to visit many many years ago. I am talking in the mid and late 2000's and very early 2010's. Some of the forum is visible in the wayback machine. Going back and seeing all the Sony fanboys taking everything so hard like if Sony screwed up it would impact their life in a major way. I wish I could see all their reactions to Sony exclusives getting PC releases. It would be fucking hilarious. I still miss that forum a bit.

MS just had a dev showcase. The highlights were the new Forza which looks amazing and Redfall which it turns out isn't actually a L4D rip-off but rather an open world FPSRPG that can be played solo or co-op.

The Evil Within guys showed a horrendous looking rhythm-based hack and slash thing that is being surprise released on Gamepass in a couple of hours.

Other than that there was a new ESO expansion and some Minecraft RTS thing.

I dunno, the trailer was kinda cringy, but I really liked what I saw from gameplay in HiFi Rush looking up YouTube videos. Animation style is interesting too.

ESO has one every year and announces it around in january, never knew they made it part of a general showcase. makes sense why pete hines would shill for it this time.

Just caught up with halfway listening to the recent interview Null did with Turkey Tom, and I remembered he talked about a game titled Blockland

I’m surprised I haven’t heard about this one before

a few weeks ago I checked if blockland really was on steam, and sure it is, in all its blocky glory
the "Minecraft ripoff award 2005" was a little mean, considering that blockland existed even before Notch's first minecraft build
I wondered if one would still be able to join the forums If you bought the steam version
turns out you can, lol
register in blockland.PNG

while It's tempting to buy it, I don't really have a real reason to besides its history with the farms
maybe if a kf blockland server was a thing...
