I've finished the first level of a game called
Savage: Ultimate Boss Fight
The gimmick of the game is that it's MMO raids but single player. Having not played any MMOs, but having played
Rabbit and Steel(same idea but 2hu and also animu and also roguelite and also a
really good soundtrack) I had a general idea of what I was getting my self into, basically just lots of on the fly dodging via movement while a big ass boss with a big ass health bar gets whittled down slowly.
What I didn't expect is that the game has you control two characters simultaneously, a paladin(tank) who can block for damage reduction, and an archer who can lob healing potions. You control the paladin with your left stick and use his skill with the left trigger, the archer with the right. Both characters auto attack(with the paladin having a far smaller aoe around him while the ranger usually covers half the map I was in), and bosses appear to usually target the paladin(seems like whatever attacks the ranger is a dodgeable attack).
I don't quite get how to influence the character's targeting if there are multiple enemies around(or which character the ranger should heal) but the auto target seems to naturally go towards the direction you've just moved in and I had no problem dealing with a boss's ultimate attack where multiple flares were approaching him and you needed to kill them all before they give him stacks powering a really painful AoE attack
I like the bosses I fought so far, I dig the fact that perfecting a final boss gives you an equipment piece, what little I've seen of the skill upgrade system looks fairly cool and based on the level select screen having a ton of dead space I can surmise there's either a lot of stages beyond the initial six or lots of difficulty settings which make the boss attack patterns a lot harder and I'm all for it. I'm really excited to play more soon, the simultaneous control bit is challenging in a way that makes my brain get less smooth and in a good way.
One (not really the game's fault) problem I have with the game is that it seems like my controller's right trigger is a bit flaky and unless I press in certain areas or hard enough, it doesn't register. Usually this is fine with the other games I've played with this controller but this game in particular seems to have an issue with it. And with the right trigger being healing which is the most vital part of the fight it's a real pain in the finger.
I ended up needing to download some control software for my controller just to tune that.
