Can I rant here?
I have been a 'gamer' for just about 25 years now and I think I can say with confidence that 2021 has been the most disappointing year for gaming in memory. My complaints are not around delays but the games themselves and I personally feel we would be in the same position, COVID or not, with a lot of these titles.

* Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite feels great to play - I'm not a huge fan of the sliding, but I know that's just my boomer gaming sense coming into play. That is where the good stops.

Progression is fucking abysmal. I know there has been a lot of debate around why people care about progression - "shouldn't you just play the game because it's fun?". I agree to a point, but when the customization screen is 90% locked cosmetics, with the only way to get a majority of them through paying, it's hard not to feel grifted. I am so sick of hearing devs talk about how they are listening - they had multiple test flights where feedback was given (including myself) and they are only 'listening' to the rage of a crowd instead of it's dedicated fans.

This is the first Halo launching without a dedicated slayer playlist. Let me repeat: a FPS game is launching without a dedicated TDM mode. This straight up boggles my mind and is totally unacceptable from AAA company infamous for their FPSs.

The game feels incredibly lonely. Gone are lobbies, where you would stay with the same players and vote on the next match. You silently wait in queue until the game starts where you engage in a silent game of halo until it ends, no reward for winning, and are booted back into the main menu before you can even mutter a GG. I made so many friends in Halo 2/3/Reach, I can't imagine how you would meet anyone in Infinite and it makes me sad for the isolated future of gaming.

* Forza Horizon 5

This is another game that looks beautiful and, when it works, can be an awesome experience. However, over a month after launch, the game is terribly broken with the latest patch this week completely breaking my game. Infinite loading screens, Crashes after spending in game currency and then, reloading the game to see that the currency is gone but you didn't receive your purchase.

Multiplayer has been broken since day 1 and I have not once been able to play with friends online. You aren't able to see each other's cars in convoys and every race you enter together is a dice roll for who's game is going to crash and burn, preventing you from playing. Instead of getting these issues ironed out, MS has gone out of their way to patch out 'exploits' from the game.

To add the Cherry ontop, I was banned from Forza 5 for week for "profanity" in a design I created. I have made two designs: one that says "Lets go Brandon!" and a mediocre pepe. After a week, I logged back in, all of my designs are still there so I still have no idea what triggered this and I have 0 recourse or information on how to prevent it from happening again. Take your vote: was it the pepe or the Brandon that got me? Either way, fuck modern coddling studios, this is pathetic.

* Battlefield 2024

I think this game has been dissected and torn to pieces enough that there's not much more I can add. Just another game to add into the disappointment pile, with Games as a Service becoming an ever growing death knell for franchisees I love. Forget about the abandonment of classes, which is still insane to me, but there isn't scoreboard! Another game that feels empty, vapid, and a *far cry* from what a modern FPS should be. Speaking of...

* Far Cry 6

Yet another uninspired, vapid Ubisoft Farcry, filled with bugs and lackluster gameplay. I was actually excited for this one, with a great cast and very promising trailers. A few months after launch it's safe to say this is even worse than Far Cry 5, which was worse than Far Cry 4, itself a crappier version of Far Cry 3.

* Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny

While debatably AAA, I am a huge fan of the franchise and the pathetic frame rate and optimization of what should be one of the best in the series is depressing. A big step back from 5 in many ways, hoping the PC release allows these framerate issues to be put by the wayside.

* New World

Amazon's forray into the MMO world was lukewarm to begin with and then was plagued with a myriad of issues due to development oversight. Disappointing game.

* Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy

I think there has been enough said on this one that, just by putting the title here, everyone will agree and understand. A pathetic cash grab from a company that could and should do better.

* Blizzard.

Yes, this is a company, not a game, but every asset and aspect of Blizzard has been disappointing at a minimum, disgusting at a maximum. Hearthstone is pathetic now, WC3:R was abandoned completely, Overwatch 2 is most likely dead, World of Warcraft has become a shell, must I say more?

Am I just getting fucking old? I feel like every AAA drop is worse than the last and Games as a Service is destroying my hobby. And then the Indie communities are swamped with Troons so there's no fucking winning - it's either embrace games made by BRAND for consoomers or engage in Troon Indie games that are mechanically solid but make me play as a queer BIPOC with they/them pronouns.

Some, but not all, and at any rate I don't investigate the sexualities of game devs before buying their games. Anyway I'd rather give ten or fifteen bucks to a random dev who may or may not be a troon than $60 to ActiBlizz at this point.

I posted my reaction to this over here. tl;dr: If this guy's really a predator (which is in doubt in the first place), this channel just increased the chances he'll walk.

I wont give a cent to Blizzo after they straight up nuked WC3 with their shitty remaster client. WC3 was one of my all time favorites and even if you didn't buy the upgrade, you got fucked by this move. Let alone the fact that it's run by sex pests.

Dude was fired, hope the next step is jail. Fucking pedo scum at every high level position at every company it seems.

Sony VP fired after appearing in pedophile sting video (A)

They don't put out content consistently enough for their own thread but Running Shine's videos are usually pretty great. I haven't watched this one yet, though.

Either way it's fucking hysterical after Sony tried to bad mouth Bobby Kotick.
That was Jim Ryan who put out a statement IIRC, it wasn't this dude.

He's gone now thankfully. The speed of the firing has me thinking if there's other evidence exists that people knew about. It may have been the parent company who initiated the firing which would be Sony Group and not Playstation itself. It has me wondering what other things will arise out of this.

it's not you getting old, the market is just chasing the shekels of a dumber, possibly bigger market (as in "fleece 1 million retards with a shoddy game that cost a million to make" instead of producing a good game with the same budget that gets less sales but will increase the value of the IP as a whole long term).

there's still good shit out there especially in the indie sphere which aren't all pozzed, if you never heard of it there's a good change it's clean because they didn't just shit out something woke to virtue signal and a quick buck. of course that means certain stuff like MMO or spectacle fps are out of their reach budget and manpower wise (although that is slowly changing with asian devs just churning out AAA looking games like it's nobody's business and finally figuring out how to do gameplay that's not worse than eurojank). fuck they even do genres you'd never expect, when was the last time you heard about an rts that isn't total war?

not everything is HOT NEW AAA GARBAGE EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT BUY NOW!!!! (like who the fuck expected new world to be good? most mmo devs never figured out what makes an mmo good and that was a decade ago when the western industry wasn't complete garbage).
you just need to look for it and be open for games that might not look AAA but surpass them it most other aspects.

can't shill steam next fest enough (next one is in februrary 2022):

I'll check this out tomorrow. But if it's another "let me list everything that happens in the game and provide vapid commentary" video I'm gonna be mad you wasted my time.

I don't really give a shit who specifically said it. Blasting another company while you harbour pedophiles in your own is hysterical.
Unless it turns out that there was a ring of them or something operating in an open secret in the company itself, you can't say they harbored them if they fire him within the same day the video goes public. He didn't seem to have an existing criminal record or anything so far, people were looking for previous arrests and shit like that. You've had cases of people being able to hide kidnappings and murders from their co-workers for years and it was only by random chance that someone found evidence of a pattern. The Amazon Killer was one of these situations.

Dude may have already destroyed evidence since he was given enough time. I mean the guy who busted him didn't have the authority to issue warrants or anything of that nature. If he was able to conceal his pedo tendencies for that long who knows what shit others in his social circle may have gotten away with.

I can't reply to @SilenceIsViolence but its not AAA games in general. Its all games. When 2015 dropped, I think that was the last time gaming was ever enjoyable. Triple A was shit but it was enjoyable shit (Witcher 3, Bloodborne, Elite: Dangerous) and the indies were not too many but were great (Nuclear Throne, Undertale, Broforce). Nowadays, its gotten shittier. Either the new indie is one copy of another good indie with tons of political leaning or that one big AAA game is a show of spectacle and nothing else. I haven't played a videogame that made me turn off from the hobby entirely (not like anime or movies where I could count 1 or 2 media that made me think "fuck this I'm done") but it has turned into a slow burn that feels unenjoyable. Sure, there are some I still play post-2015 but its so few. And even then, I still play some old games like Enemy Territory more than the new shiny shit.

nah, I was on the same blackpill level but there's still good games out there. usually not AAA or shit that gets a lot of marketing tho, so you need to look harder. found more games during the last steam next fests I actually had fun with and enjoyed (and looking forward to release) than anything else in the last 5 years before.

also helps that they're are smaller and feel more like a complete package that you can finish at some point compared to a $70 AAA game that drowns you in chores and microtransactions to grind so you never leave.

I kinda half-agree and disagree. Yeah I did find some games under the radar like Cruelty Squad but there is also the socialization effect with games. As most games start appealing to the public, more people get into gaming, and most discussions ends up being the usual entry-level shit, which means those of recent games. Its rare for me to find someone to play CSS or Quake, and it most especially depends on the country you are living in because I'll tell you one thing, third-world shitholes have no idea about games unless its free-to-play or mobile. Just my cents on what it feels like being a 20s gamer in Not-America.

While I agree 2015 was definitely a decent year for gaming, I disagree that there hasn't been anything since. IMO, 2021 is the first year I cannot think of a single AAA or AA game that lived up to my expectations.

Just the ones I can think of that I played through completion offhand - there's plenty more Indies missing here, but just my quick highlights:
  • 2016
    • Dark Souls 3
    • Xcom 2
    • Overwatch (at launch it was a good time, then they ruined it)
    • Fallout 4 (It's not NV, but it's still better than a lot of the junk out there)
    • Witcher 3 Blood and Wine
    • P5
  • 2017 (probably the best year in recent memory)
    • Breath of the Wild
    • Mario Odyssey
    • PUBG
    • Divinity Original Sin 2
    • Cuphead (AA)
    • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (AA)
  • 2018
    • Monster Hunter: World
    • RDR2
    • Smash Ultimate
    • Hollow Knight
    • Forza Horizon 4
  • 2019
    • Sekiro
    • Disco Elysium (AA)
    • Death Stranding*
  • 2020
    • Animal Crossing
    • Hades (AA)
    • Ori 2
    • Yakuza 0
  • 2021
    • ???
I'm not saying all of these games were 10/10, but I'd say that I beat all of them (*didn't beat Death Stranding, but I did enjoy my time) and I look back at this whole list fondly. When I look at 2021 games (Horizon 5, Infinite, GTA Trilogy Remaster) all I get is angry - the best thing to come out in 2021 that I can think of was the Mass Effect collection, which barely counts as it's remasters of already great games. I don't own a playstation, so I'm missing some of the good ones there I'm sure (God of War, Ghosts of Tsushima, etc).
