Don't wanna sad up the chat but I figured I'd share something ya kiwis can probably appreciate.
The first game I ever played ONLINE (plenty before that) was Burnout Paradise on the PS3. We finally got solid internet at the house. My dad let me pick one DLC car for $2 and I picked the Carson Bootlegger.
When I fired it up online the first time, I went to the Airfield portion of the map. There I met 4 friends, Joey, Smac, Monster and Duck. They invited me to join them in goofing off at the airfield, and so a core memory was formed for me, jumping and smashing around the airfield in my Bootlegger for hours. I gamed with those guys for years. We were all 12-14yo
Burnout Paradise was remastered in 2018 or so. I bought it some time ago and occasionally play it. And today I decided to go back. Same car. Same location. ~15 years later.
Smac, and his little brother who often gamed with us, never returned from running an errand with their mom one day. We were gaming, their mom asked them to run to walmart....and they never logged on again. Monster was sickly to begin with, and after hearing him deteriorate over time he also simply never logged on again. Joey left us for the growing COD craze. Me and duck gamed for a few more years before slowly moving to different games.
It's dumb to think about a game leaving a mark on someone like that. But I'm pretty sure that memory of that first time online will stick with me until I die. Not only are these friends gone now. But these games are gone too. I tend not to put alot of stock in games because realistically speaking, they mean nothing. But at the same time it did have a big influence on me.
Even tho its not real, it has a real effect. And it's a shame we can't go back to that time of better games, fun memories like that. Those games are gone. Dumbfun multiplayer is dead, essentially.
Just putting things in perspective. Have a good night kiwis.
