Alright, more reviewin' to be doin' on the batch of random codes given to me by
@a-Lager.
On Rusty Trails
Alright, I did not play this one very long. This is from the school of basic level-based short-form platformers, very similar formatting to Super Meat Boy but without the high difficulty that gives it it's pull. This game's unique mechanic is that you can cling to walls and ceilings and walk along them leading to puzzle design about finding the right path to proceed to the end point and avoid obstacles. There is a system where you can find tokens that activate checkpoints but you can also just take the tokens to the end of the level and get a completion bonus for how many you held on to... I assume, the you get the amount I couldn't find any kind of checklist showing if you perfected levels in this way and couldn't find any evidence that it did anything - the levels are so short (at least in the first world) that the amount of checkpoints is almost comedic (like 5 for a 1 minute level), but I suppose not accidentally touching the checkpoints on accident and activating them to save the token could be the intention.
I got far enough to where you get an ability to change colors which activates/deactivates platforms of your corresponding color and I'd imagine you get more gimmicks like this as the game goes on but jeeze-a-loo there are like 5 worlds of like 20 levels each and the first was just so basic and brainless I couldn't work up the urge to keep going. The thing that really sealed me deciding to stop is the way movement works. Like I said you can move in all directions across walls but they made a grave sin in this design... typically when games do this you can just keep holding your initial direction and the character will keep going forwards. For instance if you are on a square you would hold right and go down the right sight, then left across the bottom, up the left side and back to the top by just holding right. In this game they decided to make it where every time you are on a new face orientation you have to hold that direction, so on the square you'd have to hold down when you got to the angle, and then left at the next, etc. This just feels bad and when you are on surfaced that change direction very frequently it just becomes soooooo tedious to make the micro adjustments. Were it not for this I'd probably have given it at least a little more time, but I had other games to play so On Rusty Trails can hit the old dusty trail!
The Dark Eye: Memoria
This is the reason it took me a few days to continue reviewing because unlike the other games so far this isn't something that was probably a mobile game and I've played it a few hours each day until finishing it. The Dark Eye: Memoria is a point & click adventure game and as I found out while playing the sequel to
The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, but that isn't one I got so we'll just have to move on without it! Now this being a point and click adventure game I'm mostly going to be reviewing the spark notes of the story so that means all the spoilers - but let's be real, you're never gonna play it!
I'll start with the mechanics overview. I've actually been a point & click enjoyer throughout my life so I have played most of the classics. From when I first played King's Quest VII when my family got a Windows 95, to the rest of the King's Quest series, Loom, Day of the Tentacle to newer stuff like Thimbleweed Park I've played my fair share. Memoria definitely tried to take a more "modern" approach to the genre as you would expect for a point & click in the 2010s. There's not death, no permanent lock-outs, very little moon logic - these are good things. However the way this is solved is to make all the puzzles much more insular. You do not explore a world, or any big areas with lots of screens - your puzzles are typically limited to at most 5 or 6 rooms at a time and the game takes place in segments where you are given a new set after the last set. This makes for tighter design, but also loses some of the appeal and challenge by limiting your options. For the most part the game consists of classic item puzzles, but there is some variety with dialogue puzzles. You may have to deduce answers from clues based on storied to find out who is lying in one example. The one that took me a little bit to figure out is a section where you have to make a story as confusing as possible so the person you are talking to has to call for help writing it down thus removing the other person as an obstacle blocking your way. The characters you play as also have access to magic spells that do stuff like break/reform items or turn living things to and back from stone which you gain and lost as is story relevant. The overall design is not bad at all.
Now, for the spark notes:
A peasant name Geron is visiting with a merchant to learn a transformation spell. Well, actually he's not so much a peasant - he's the hero of the realm from the previous game but I didn't know that at the start until he said it. People still treat him like a peasant though, so sucks to be him! Basically in the last game apparently him and his QT3.14 fairy gf (who are human sized in this world) who he met on the adventure saved the world from some threat of some kind and a resulted consequence of that is that she was changed into a raven and he wants the spell to change her back because he isn't into cloaca action. Oh, and also I guess she loses her memory the more she's a bird or whatever. Your new ethnic merchant friend in exchange for the spell wants only for you to solve a riddle that comes to him from his dreams in a story about a princess from 4000 years ago which he explains.
You take control of the middle eastern princess Sadja who doesn't wear a burqa and will therefore probably be raped by Muhammed and blamed for it. She and a group are in the tomb of her ancestor to retreive a magic mask. She was only brought because she can read the ancient language and after some puzzle shenanigans she reads the riddle inscription above the tomb and refuses to tell her companions what it says before rushing it. Some non-goyim golems decide to kill her companions as soon as she picks up the mask and break the seal trapping her in the tomb. She finds a magic staff that starts taking to her mentally and gives her some magic powers as long as she holds it.
A sentient magic item giving a brown girlboss powers... hmmm. They use it to escape the tomb and find out Mohammed, on of the group actually lived and is a dick who demands all your money to guide you to where you want to go - which is to fight the demon war so everybody will think you're super cool (really her reason).
After this part of the story is told the merchant wants you to solve the riddle she read above the tomb but didn't explain and Geron goes home to think about it. The next day an angry mob of peasants went to kill the merchant because they think he's a witch... but they've all been turned to stone with the merchant nowhere to be found. The town's
FUCKING MAGICAL ACADEMY WHICH IS OPENLY OPERATING sends some people to investiagate the stone peasants who are apperently okay with
those magicians. More puzzles ensue and you find the mask from the story behind tent in one of the stone peasants grasp. The two magic representitives catch you and take it, with the leader having the girl interogate you but she dosen't care and lets you go. You try to find the merchant so he can change your girl back and put fairy pussy back on the menu and end up investigating what happened with the magician girl, Bryda, from earlier. There was a spooky demon what done it and as you try to catch it it turns out it was the
tree behind you the whole time!
You go back to Sadja's perspective as she and Mohammed travel to her destination but Mohammed acts more like a jew than a muslim and keeps demanding all your stuff until he knocks you out to just take it. You go through the Lost Woods from Zelda to find him as you and your magic stick get snippy and sacrastic with each other until it remembers it can turn living objects into stone and then how to implant ideas into people's head. You save Mohammed from some amazons with the power of brain fuckery and then he tried to kill you again so you turn his hands into stone.
Geron and Bryda wake up unmolested by the tree demon. She gets reprimanded for not bringing it to her superiors and she asks you to go get her boss who has been turned to stone, whoops! Wow, that sure is weird people are turning to stone in the past and present... must be a coincidence! You find out the mask was taken from your stone pal and then the spooky demon appears and makes you solve a pointless elemental puzzle - btw, fucking ore is an element in this world seperate from earth. He gives you a book in exhange then turns to stone and dosen't elaborate.
The book tells how Sadja went to wizard land to join the demon slaying campaign and also finds out that the mask has incantations written on it... but it's all magic gibberish that she can't remember so she has to have the staff tell it too her...
it's surley as simple as that. Turns out the mask can steal people's memories which it had her do to Mohammed so he would stop trying to kill her - this makes her made because women want there to be a high risk of brown men killing them. In magic town Sadja won't shut up about wanting to join the demon killing army so her great deeds will be remember by history, even though she hasn't done jack shit.
It's still her primary motivation. She meets the the person who sent her party to find the mask originally which turns out to be her brother

who properly calls out she hasn't done anything, and he portrays himself as the royal chad and her as the crying princessjak. The magic people locked him up because he was a bad boy and they don't trusther because of it so they take your shit and put you in minimum security house arrest. You girlboss your way out and join the army after learning the mask was created by some butthurt servant of the time god who is super autistic about recording history and the mask can basically rewrite history and is hidden in some place outside of time. The time god gets butthurt in return he can't see there so he just says nothing there counts, but if he hears someone mention what happened there he writes it down as fact so you can just lie - of course, if one does lie and he finds out he just tortures them forever. Sadja goes to the outside of time place to get the magic wish granting mask's magic word to gaslight herself into history as famous but her dick brother

takes it to wish to be a bigger dick and leaves her there. He posts a silly prostitue to lie to the time god and fanfic him learning the magic word while he was there, but Sadja knows he likes prostitutes (surly irrelevant) and tricks the girl into
eternal time god torture by having her admit
she made it the fuck up and causes prince dick to retroactivley never have learned the magic word, though he still has the mask.
Oh did I mention the staff is a guy who had his memory erased with the mask and then turned into a staff? Well, it's not that relevant.
Later at the big awesome demon war we've been hearing about,
it plays out in the background and you just ignore it while prince dick tries to steal magic powers to make the mask work. You stop prince dick and he laughs at you for being an loser no one will remember. The flying fortress this all takes place in crashes (did I forget to mention that?) and Sadja is the only survivor in the whole damn war... except for a big tentacle demon that attmpets to Mohammed her for not wearing a burqa where she is rescued by a mage guy from earlier, but drops the staff. What happened to them after that is not in the book.
Geron tries to find merchant man again while Bryda feeds false intel to her mage pals who now have a big army trying to find him. Geron uses loose lips to sink ships and misleads the entire army and finds the merchant along with the demon...
who turns out to be the staff! After the battle he layed on the ground for 4000 years until he learned to turn himself into creepypasta monster and he wants to find out what happened to Sadja and thinks the riddle is the answer, which is why he was with the merchant. They agree to turn your bird GF back into a fairy for free but she chose just then to completley lose all her memories - dogonit! Well, the angry mob waits for no man so during your emotional breakdown staff man has no choice but to turn you into stone to avoid getting lynched.
Staff takes stone you, stone merchant and Bryda to the original tomb to finally solve the riddle. After puzzle antics to stop being a pillar they try to determine what Sadja did in the place outside time to make it real and therefore bring her back. You make your little story and Sadja was a sad failure so she just earased herself apperently. Staff is sad, but Geron dosen't care because he want's some 50 first dates fairy pussy ASAP only for Bryda to pull the uno reverse. Turns out she wants to use the mask to make the world cool like in Sadja's demon war times and used the magic word from the mask to do so. She turns Staff back into staff (as opposed to a humanoid demon staff) and starts changing the world. Geron rushes out to talk to merchant who reveals he also has a magic power which is why Staff went with him. He can touch items and see their history. Luckily you have Sadja's ruby I never mentioned and he touches it...
Uh oh, it's Sadja and Prince dick as kids! Wait a second... didn't Prince dick like prostitues? Wait a second... why is Sadja getting laughed at by him and beaten by the royal guard? Wait a second... why is she tattooing herself with the royal mark that is how everyone knows she's a princess. Well, turns out she ain't one... the prince just likes prostitutes and she was mad jelly of his royal jewels. This lead to the funniest fucking thing in the game...
Geron and Merchant finally understand the riddle. You go see Bryda remaking the world and you set the record straight of what happened. She saw the riddle at the beggining of the game but didn't tell anyone what it said or her solution. In the place out of time Sadja had the mask and she looked at it in despair. But why? She had the mask and the incantations... Well, guess what... she isn't a princess but a peasant as stated earlier... and you know what peasants in ye olde times couldn't do...?
SHES IS FUCKING ILLITERATE! LOL!
This probably was not meant to be funny, but to me it very much was. She just couldn't fucking read the text, so the riddle was meaningless. Well, since she couldn't read the mask's inscription to grant her wish it means Bryda gets called out for lying to the time god and gets to enjoy eternal time torture just like the prostitue earlier. Staff congratulates you on a job well done even though he didn't fucking gain anything and says he'll turn your GF back to a hot fairy even though she'll have no memory or you can just let her go be a bird and fuck off. Geron latered roped because he gained nothing from all this (headcannon).
Staff later decides he's gonna fanfic reality with some cold logic. He takes Sadja's ruby and says "Ya know... you don't gotta read to cast the stone spell and people sometimes turn into other materials than rock when it's used." (Did I forget to mention that earlier? Oh well.) "So isn't it possible that our illiterate queen did something else...? I mean this ruby was in the last place she was..."
and then...
in a flash of lighe as Staff rewrites reality...
Sadja's voice rings out...
"I turned myself into a ruby, Staff!"
"I'M RUBY SADJA!"
Funniest shit I've ever heard.
THE END.
