I played the FF games like a complete retard. X-2 was my favorite and like a decade+ later I finally tried and beat X. Both are great games, in my humble opinion, but I understand why fans of X hate X-2 and possibly vice-versa. I have literally never beat a different FF game and I played the MMO off and on.
I never played the MMOs, myself. I was into different MMOs at the time (Mostly EVE, a little Lineage 2) and never picked em up. I played the hell out of X. I probably put more hours into blitzball alone than the rest of the game. But I dropped X-2 about 10 minutes in and never picked it up again. Yet, my buddy played the hell out of it.

Different strokes and all that, but I did call him a fag a lot because of it. That shit was fuckin gayyyyy.

Friendos, please can I ask for some advice on the Final Fantasy games.

I’ve never played any of these - I was too busy at the time playing obscure RPGs like Shining Force and Phantasy Star games on my Sega consoles.

Mindful of this, I’m not sure what to go for - I read that the original FF6 & FF7 are the best, but what of the modern games? I’m a bit confused by that FF7 Remake Intercooler shit, and I notice all the Steam releases have a lot of complaints. I’m on PC so am looking for some ideas from anyone inclined to advise.

Happy to emulate them if need be.
I am not the most versed person regarding FF, but from my experience and what I could gather on the Internet:

FF 1-6 got various ports over the years, the latest being the Pixel Remaster. You will have to take a look which version got which additional content you care about.
FF 7-9 should be played on PC due to the amount of mods, don't see any reason to emulate the OG versions.
FF X / X-2 got "remastered" versions some time ago, but the faces got fucked up, among other graphical and atmospheric issues. There are mods, but emulation can be an option.
FF 12 go for the Zodiac version, which is the extended version of the OG game that was a JP only release.
FF 13 and both its sequels got shitty PC ports, so either you have to mod it or get the Xbox versions.
FF 15 and 16 just play on PC.

I wanna tell everyone about No Players Online but it's hard to because the game got DMCA'd from Steam shortly after it's launch. It even has a neat ARG going on right now that's kinda fucked since they won't be able to update the game.
Why was it DMCA'd?
Niche Gamer: No Players Online returns to Steam after false DMCA takedown (archive)
According to Beeswax Games and Black Lantern Collective, the DMCA takedown was issued by a “former friend” who allegedly was not involved in the project. You can read the full statement from No Players Online below [archive] [ghost] [mega].
recently, No Players Online was removed from steam for nearly 3 weeks right after launch following a DMCA claim made by a former friend. they claimed to be a co-author of the game despite not having done anything for it. NPO was made completely from scratch by our team.

despite trying to clarify to them the past couple months that their allegations were completely unfounded, they recklessly filed the DMCA to steam without any notice, and the game was taken down on november 13th. we immediately filed a counter-notice, and today the game has been reinstated after the time for them to respond has passed.

we spent 2 and a half years of our lives and a ton of money making this game. we also have a lot of people who believed in us and wanted us to succeed. it’s crazy to me that someone can just take down our game by filling out a simple form, and it’s been tough trying to reconcile with this betrayal from someone i considered a dear friend.

we sincerely apologize to everyone who was unable to purchase or access the game during the past few weeks. this situation has had a significant impact on us, especially given how crucial the first months after release are for small indies like us. we lost out on much needed momentum and revenue right after the release of our game and we’re unsure if we will be able to recover financially from this given our already thin margins.

we are committed to doing all that we have planned still for No Players Online, but at this point we are unsure about the future of our studio. any visibility on our game at this point would be crucial, so if you want to support a little indie studio please leave a review on steam and share the game to the internet. <3

much love,
adam pype, the beeswax team and black lantern collective.

Apparently the bald soyjack that everyone made fun of in the Metroid Prime 4 trailers is not in fact a tutorial npc and he and other annoying npcs that never shut the fuck up will follow you throughout the entire game.

What the shit were they thinking?

What does our beautiful isolationist game need ? That's right, YAPPING ZOOMER CHARACTERS !!!! I can not comprehend how shit likes this gets approved at any point during the development. Do people not understand their own creations ?

Since there's no thread on games like Chivalry, Mordhau, etc. I'll just post this here:
Is being helped made by a former Mordhau "high skill level" shitposter GIRU so it might just manage to break away from some of the less enjoyable aspects that similar melee slashers tended to repeat. I still think it'll be "mid" and will be plagues by it's own issues, it's a cursed genre. Might be an actual game at least unlike Blight: Survival, which looks like a bunch of set pieces and animations rather than a game that will be played.
I should really go about making that thread sometime soon...

Gamesradar: After a quiet flop and some very loud industry-wide implosion, Shovel Knight dev really needs its new Game Boy-style soulslike to break through: "If we sold, like, 100,000, that's not so good" (A)

Shovel Knight developer, Yacht Club Games, says that it needs its next release, Mina the Hollower, to be a success or the company may have to downsize, forgo independence, or worse, with co-founder Sean Velasco claiming, "It's make-or-break for sure."
"If we sold 500,000 copies, then we would be golden. If we sold even 200,000, that would be really, really great. If we sold, like, 100,000, that's not so good." He doesn't think Yacht Club will shut down if Mina fails to sell, but the future of the company is uncertain. "If Mina flops, we'll still be around," Velasco says. "[But] we would need more money."

This studio got $1.2 million in crowdfunding to develop this game. It's been in development for six years. A simple little GBA Zelda style dungeon crawler should not be that difficult for a studio like this. It isn't like this is their first game.

It's always funny seeing one of "the great indie studios" fail to actually move on from their one hit game. They made fucking what, puzzle quest/tetris versions of shovel knight? Now they're tasked with actually moving on and they can't even do that.

"Dawg, our revolutionary new idea... 2D souls like.......... with a funny little animal"

It's amazing to me because 20 years ago this would've been a Flash game on Newgrounds made by 1-3 people working in their spare time over the course of a few months. Today it's a game with a seven figure budget, six years of development, and a professional studio with 19 people working on it full time.

Helldivers 2 devs slash install size from 154GB to 23GB, thanks to the help of PC port veterans — ditching HDD optimization, 85% size reduction accomplished by de-duplicating game data
Originally, the game’s large install size was attributed to optimization for mechanical hard drives since duplicating data is used to reduce loading times on older storage media. However, it turns out that Arrowhead’s estimates for load times on HDDs, based on industry data, were incorrect.

With their latest data measurements specific to the game, the developers have confirmed the small number of players (11% last week) using mechanical hard drives will witness mission load times increase by only a few seconds in worst cases. Additionally, the post reads, “the majority of the loading time in Helldivers 2 is due to level-generation rather than asset loading. This level generation happens in parallel with loading assets from the disk and so is the main determining factor of the loading time.”
The game was 6-7 times larger than it needed to be for no apparent reason.

I would say it’s Sony outsourcing shit to jeets, but white california leftists being too retarded to optimize feels too plausible an explanation as well, even with other games like Destiny and Call of Duty (though it’s gotten slightly better now that they’ve rolled back old games out of the CoD HQ)

I've always wondered why Baldur's Gate 3 is 167 fucking gigs. It's ok looking but not nearly as graphically impressive as Cyberpunk despite being twice as big. (85 gigs)

This explains a lot.

Arrowhead is Swedish. Ok, Swedes are basically the europoor version of californians but still.

Yeah, duplication of assets to account for slow storage has been going on for a long time, probably since at least the days of CD-ROM games.

As SSDs become a hard requirement, average install sizes might stop increasing for a while as developers end the practice.

This is utterly inexcusable incompetence. Why are people celebrating this shit?
It's like celebrating your friend losing weight. Shouldn't have been gaining it at all but at least they're trying.

Arrowhead has been somewhat cleaning up their act since they were forced to in September. But they're still a long way from fixing their reputation.
