I ended up getting crimson desert over doom. I figured the could hinder hours I'll get out of it will outweigh the cost. My other interest was getting it to run on my steam deck since I heard that performance was shit. All I can say is I think people are spoiled nowadays lol. Growing up I never had the best pc so 20-30 fps was normal for me. Sure it's not silky smooth but the fact it runs at all is amazing. Game wise im a little annoyed they didn't give me all my tools out the gate and I need to beat 3-4 chapters just to free roam without running into bs i can't do. Otherwise it's alright contentslop

Yes, I agree, but his point of people being "spoiled" is hilarious given the lack of optimization in modern games.
Games were never optimized the way you think they were.

Ever.

Every generation, you get an objectively better experience on measurably older hardware. These supposed "well-optimized" games of the past ran like dog shit on high-end machines. It's not relative. 320x200 @ 20 fps was never easy to look at, not even at the time.

Defending shitty optimization because your computer used to not be so great is retarded.

I have a good pc, I'm talking shit on the morons who think the steam deck should run every new game at 60fps smooth. Yes, I think people that bought a fucking steam deck 4 years ago and expect it to still be a strong device are spoiled you retarded mong.

I don't need 60fps or more, I just need stable. But I'm also the guy who still feels kinda uncanny valley at over 720p and hates OLED screens.

In other news, Tombwater has been fun. It's a spooky, cosmic horror, cowboy souls-like with light puzzling and platforming. The spells have been fun and the crafting has very nice and forgiving QOL to try out different kits. I wish the environmental art was a bit more complex, but some of the monster design is pretty neat and it was made mostly by two guys, so it's impressive for that. Good spooky music too! 7ish/10 right now.

Garry Newman's Hit new Game, S&box.

Man, as I get older and play more games my taste keep narrowing to a point it's hard to find new stuff. Outside of the like 0-2 massive outliers in the AAA space a year I'm pretty much limited to super niche indie games that are either super autistic RPGs of some description, spiritual sequels to unique cult classic games, super hard platformers or games that have extremely novel mechanics too different to ignore. Feels like I spend more time looking through Steam or YouTube videos about potential games then actually playing them.

Play stuff you enjoyed from your childhood. I downloaded a bunch of PS2 era JRPGs and I'm having fun playing games again.

I stayed up until like 3am playing Shadow Hearts and FF12.

Did you actually play the PS2 version of FF12? Because the PC port is pretty much the best way to play it these days. Shadow Hearts coming to PC would be awesome. I saw that Breath of Fire IV just got a port the other day so I'm hopeful for more games from the golden era of JRPGs.

Technically the game got ported to PC back in 2003, and the recent port already came out on GOG last year.
In their infinite genius, Capcom also decided to apply DRM to a 26 year old game for the Steam version.

Dumb, sure, but if it brings me closer to nicer looking versions of shit like Suikoden 3-5, Valkyrie Profile, and other shit from the PS1 and PS2 era it's whatever.

Since my Internet connection is out but my Wi-Fi is working, it looks like I'll have no choice but to go back to playing the PS2/Xbox/GameCube consoles for the next couple of days until things start working again.
First game up will be Maximo: Ghosts To Glory for the PS2

Well, I beat OG Demon's Souls and I certainly have mixed but positive feelings.
.
Positives first, I mostly had fun. The level themes were interesting overall and the beating heart audio in Upper Latria was genuinely unsettling. Design-wise, I really liked the visuals (for the most part).
Did realize I had picked an odd order, albeit one that's seemingly quite common, but I went straight back to Boletaria after Dragon God and swept through.
The bosses frequently being puzzles in approach was novel and, seeing what FROM iterated on was neat.
Easy access to smithing materials is lovely. Thank you, filthy man in 2-1.
The end was cathartic, but in a satisfying way.
Guillotine Axe, my beloved.

Now to complain.
Item weight is one of the worst arpg mechanics I have ever had the displeasure of managing. I can accept it in survival crafting games or other series, but it really fucks with the pacing in this game.
Boletaria is my least favorite starting area in the "series", and I can see how people would quit at or before Tower Knight. The amount of times I've bounced off the game because I either got fatigued from the long runs, the trial and error of the drake fire hitboxes, or I failed to play how the game wanted me to is substantial, though part of it was getting used to 30fps and giving up on the lock-on crutch/gimp.
Flamelurker beat the shit out of me until I got my trusty Guillotine Axe +7 and a flame res shield. The levels in general feel more like a slog and war of attrition than I enjoy.
The more I write, the less I want to say. The last and biggest complaints I have are the Dragon God fight and the Drake's flame pattern leading up to Allant. The line of sight and stealth mechanics are unpleasant and I died more times the DG than the rest of the game combined. The flames for the latter, however, are one of the most aggravating graphical choices I've seen in an action game. Until I gave up and googled it, I had no way of knowing the first of the two flames in his pattern actually goes left-to-right. Every single time I watching the animation, it just looks like it covers the entire staircase and I still don't trust that dash. Is this a DSP-ism? Maybe. Do I still feel justified in my annoyance? Yes.
Ahhhhh fucking poison swamp. I can't believe their design has only been uphill since Valley of Defilement because holy shit was it annoying and had one of the dumbest archdemons/boss rooms with their stupid plague fetus pits.

Overall, I enjoyed it but didn't really get engrossed until after beating flamelurker and working through Tower of Latria. There's a bit too much I don't wish to revisit for me to replay the game, but I don't regret playing it.
I give Demon's Souls an Infernal Bugbear's retardedly large hp pool divided by its equally retarded damage reduction out of 10 (ie 6).
