Video Game Recommendation Thread

May as well throw down some CRPG's (and an FPS since that puts you in a purely first person perspective with real-time combat):

Wizardry 8 - I recommend it to those that like playing turn-based sort of RPG games. It's a gem from 15 years ago and it does hold up to this day. Unlike other series such as Ultima where they went out with a terrible bang, Wizardry went out without one. In place of that, the game wasn't a pile of crap but a rather good gem. Though copies would be found on the likes of E-Bay, one can get it through the likes of GoG or Steam.

Gothic - A German CRPG from 2001, released a year before the likes of Morrowind. The world itself is more animated than that of Oblivion since you do have NPC's who do more than just talk. NPC's could cook, patrol around and not just in a single spot kind. You had NPC's who actually worked at a forge or in a (swamp)weed farm. Getting to combat, it is a bit tricky at first since melee combat requires timing but once you get the hang of it, it'll prove to be fun. The game itself also has a sort of path that starts off as open (join any of the three camps) that does whittle down to being linear (justified since you are basically trying to break out it along with things going down the drain). Like Wizardry 8, websites like Amazon and online distibutors such as GoG and Steam are your friends in buying this game.

System Shock 2 - 1999 gem that does hold up well to this day. It has a good soundtrack, the atmosphere can be oppressive at times, especially when you know you are dead if you aren't careful with what is at the corner. The game offers replayability via the skills you have, be it using psionic abilities, guns, cyber ,or a combination of the three. The game itself can also shine in that it has some modding tools which means custom fan missions and such. As with the previous two, look on GoG, Steam, and the likes of E-Bay or Amazon.

I'd like to recommend Papers, Please!

It's a game where you have to either accept or deny immigrants to your (still shitty, but marginally less shitty) country. It doesn't sound very complicated, but it has a really interesting set of moral choices. Do you turn away the refugee because his name is slightly misspelled? Or do you accept him, get demerited, lose money, and have to sacrifice a family member instead? How strong are your morals, and how far do they go?

I know I mentioned this a lot of times, but I highly recommend Xenoblade Chronicles. I'm don't want to reveal too much, so I'm just going to to let this image and the video speak to itself.

Edit: Here's some other games I recommend:

Grand Thief Auto: Sans Andreas- One of the best open worlds I played. I loved the world, just a lot to do. Plus some of the glitches are amazing.

LSD Dream Emulator: This is 500 yen off PSN, but pretty worth it if you want to get mind-screwed. You go through someone's dream and just explore the areas til time is up. It really nails the aspects of dream and it doesn't look too bad for a PS1 title.

Shadow of the Colossus: A game where you fight giant creatures in order to bring your loved one back from the dead. Each colossus is unique and requires you to figure out how to get on the thing before you can actually start killing it. The fights are epic, the music is amazing, the atmosphere provided by the game is unmatched for me. And while the story is relatively simple, I kinda feel it's engaging enough to the point where you just want to see what happens at the end. It's one of my most favorite games ever, if not my most favorite.

Final Fantasy IX: The third of the PS1 Final Fantasy games and one of my most favorite JRPG's of all time. The characters are all well written and very likable, the story has me hooked until the very end, the battle system is both simple and engaging and the music is phenomenal. From what I've read, this is considered Hironobu Sakaguchi's favorite Final Fantasy game he worked on. That's saying something.

Katawa Shoujo: Whether or not it's considered a game is debatable, but either way, it's a fun read that tackles an interesting subject matter and has a bunch of well written characters. Hanako is best girl btw...

Team Fortress 2: Over seven years old and I still feel this is one of the best online FPS's out there. With 9 different classes, a bunch of different weapons to use, several different maps and game types, the fact that it's free, and it can pretty much run on most computers now a days, I can't think of any reason not to at least try it out. Fantastic game this is.

Oddworld series: In particular, Abe's Oddysee. A 2D platformer with puzzle elements that takes place in a world where big business has gotten out of hand, leading to the enslavement and slaughter of the indigenous creatures for the sake of profit. The game's themes are pretty relevant to even to this day. At the same time, it doesn't take itself TOO seriously or preachy and has it's own sense of humor. Abe himself is a really lovable protagonist I feel. A goofy, awkward, skinny blue floor waxer trying to save himself and his people from becoming the next big meat product his employers intend to sell. It's a pretty major game in my childhood and it has stuck with me to this very day.

Right, i'm gonna shy away from big name games and deliberately go for games that I personally feel flew under the radar.

Binary Domain. ps3/xbox360/steam.

A third person, cover based shooter from Sega's Yakuza team, Binary Domain seemed to suffer from the game community attitude of "if it averages less than 80% it's not worth buying", well that and the fact Sega's marketing was non existent.

Distinctly Japanese, with a bonkers story and daft dialogue, I personally felt it added to the experience after a whole generation of po-faced dudebro shooters from western companies.
The premise see's the player character and his team infiltrate an isolated Japan to combat a cybernetic threat, the game features a system where the other team members have on overall opinion of the player based on his actions during combat and replies to questions. Do something cool during a fight and they'll go on about how impressed they are, help them and they'll be grateful. Conversely, if you act like an idiot or put them in a dangerous position, they'll just get pissed off.
This ultimately affects cutscenes and even the ending to the game, so there is replay value in it.

The main draw for me is the combat, at first glance it appears very cookie cutter, with the usual selection of guns, and plenty of waist high walls to hide behind. But what I feel sets it apart is the flow of the combat and most of all, the feedback from your weapons striking the enemies.
You see, all enemies in Binary Domain are robotic, blast their gun arm off and they'll rotate their torso and pick up the fallen weapon, shoot their legs out and they'll crawl towards you terminator style, blow their heads off and they'll go haywire and shoot uncontrollably at everything around them. even simple torso shots send shards of metal flying alongside a really satisfying shattering sound.

Points are rewarded for downing enemies, and these are what's used for the upgrade system. You get slightly more points for killing effectively with headshots and doing some decent damage like removing limbs, so you get this really satisfying feedback loop of fun combat and constant small reward throughout the whole game.

One of the best compliments i can give the game is that it feels like a Dreamcast game, I know that's really daft and non-specific, but it's got that feeling of fun and soul from Sega's offerings of that period.

There was a demo released on the consoles that gives a decent impression of the combat, I'm not sure about PC. The thing is, you can get this game for peanuts these days, and I think it's well worth spending a few bucks on.

Worth a shot guys!

I'd like to kinda go a different direction for this recommendation. The game is called Loneliness and it's an indie flash game that you can play right now for absolutely free!

This game is very love-it-or-hate-it due to its experimental nature, but it's a game I would definitely suggest people try. It doesn't take very long, but it's a really good simulation for the kind of loneliness that many people feel on a daily basis.

Please be aware, this game might make you sad.

Dude this game was bad-ass. The secret ending where you go around killing children in Korea was just the icing on the cake.

Was that before or after the part where you snipe JFK with a fruitbat?

bulletstorm. its short and can get a bit repetitive, but the writing and action are golden.

bonus points for having one of the best female characters in vidya and one of the most over the top villains in recent memory (handsome jack can suck a dick)

SUCK THE TEARS OFF MY DICK, YOU UGLY MUD FUCKERS

If you like horror movies, the works of HP Lovecraft, metal, and/or brawlers, Splatterhouse 2013 is for you. While far, far, far from being a perfect game, Splatterhouse greatly captures the spirit of the original trilogy of games and has a surprisingly good story. It also manages to be genuinely eerie at times, despite the comedic banter of the Terror Mask. The gameplay is more than a bit flawed, but it's a pretty damn fun action game once you get used to some of the quirks.

That said, the game is notorious for having poor load times and sound/texture glitches. The game goes for about 20 bucks nowadays, and getting it also will net you the original three games as well.

I also second the recommendation for Saints Row 2. It has a lot of great elements for a open world game like customization clothes, going into buildings, and fun gameplay. Also the whole throwing stuff to people is awesome.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch:
If you into Studio Ghibli in general and Level 5 who's behind Dark Cloud, you're going to enjoy this. Its really a charming JRPG with just a few problems, one is that the AI for your allies sucks. Plus the score is composed by Joe Hisaishi.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked:
Its a excellent SRPG mixing both aspects of the mainline and Persona series, making it a good game to get into the series. It has a good concept, being trapped in a lock-down filled with demons while you have the choice to lift it whatever way. Managing your demons and fusioning them is great.

I'm a big RPG gamer so this will be very RPG heavy.

Suikoden I and II are two of the most underrated RPGs of their time.
Wasteland 2 - The original served as a prequel for the Fallout series (in New Vegas the Desert Rangers were shown to have joined up with the NCR) and is a throwback to the first two Fallout games.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - PSX classic.
Xenogears: The second disc was cut short because money was being diverted into the vastly inferior FFVIII, but still an amazing story.
Wild Arms 2nd Ignition: The first three games are excellent. They remade the first one for the PS2. This one has my favorite story and tackles some really serious subjects such as what it means to be a hero (one of the protagonists is a "War Criminal" to some, a hero to others).
I LOVE THIS SOUNDTRACK

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines: Unfortunately buggy, but there are mods that fix it. Play as a Malkavian for extra lulz.
Valkyrie Profile: Came out near the end of the PSX so it was overlooked. You collect dead heroes for your army in preparation for the Ragnarok.
Vandal Hearts: One of the first "tactics" style RPGs. The deaths are ridiculous.
Final Fantasy V: The best in the series by far. Kefka's such a fucker.
Contact: Fun little DS game that reminded me a lot of Earthbound with the humor.
Ogre Battle: Ridiculously hard game.
Tactics Ogre: Sequel to the above game. Nonlinear story has a high replay value.

I will also vouch for Tactics Ogre (playing it right now). It's the lesser known cousin of Final Fantasy Tactics. Has a bit of a high learning curve but what draws me in is that the story covers some heavy things like racism, nationalism and war crimes. And this is a game made in the Super Nintendo era.

As per the title, really. I'm bored, and have run out of games that grab me.

The kind of stuff that I like is generally more Sci-Fi oriented, definitely non-weeb, story-driven and dripping with lore. Games that I've beaten and enjoyed include the Mass Effect Trilogy, Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Dragon Age series (let's not talk about number 2) and the Deus Ex series. I'm currently working my way through Prey (although I'm a little underwhelmed by it so far) and I've got part 2 of The Fall when I'm done with this.

Genre-wise, while I have a preference for Sci-Fi, I'm totally OK with Fantasy. FPS, TPS and RPG games are fine by me -

I liked where the lore was originally going with Destiny, but it swiftly got to the point where the community was doing a better job of it than the developers were, so that died a bit of a death for me.

I was also really stoked (and subsequently really stung) by Shadowrun - I had incredibly (and probably utterly unfeasible) high hopes for it, and, well, we all saw how that turned out.

So I put it to you, fellow farmers. What would you recommend? I play on PC and PS4.

Tagging @Jaimas and @GethN7 because you're the biggest games nerds I can think of on KF, and your input would be appreciated.

I would personally give Fall Out: New Vegas a try. Granted there’s a lot of lore that’s to be had in prior games, but it’s still a great stand alone game. I can’t begin to tell you how many hours I’ve sunk into the game, and am actually on my 4th or 5th playthrough. If you decide on this one, I’d heavily recommend getting the DLC’s. They are some of the best add on contents for any game imho.
