If you're near the area, go to Kishi Station where you can meet Nitama the cat train station manager.

Thanks for the recommendations folks, I've got one of the JR rail passes so I'll try and tick off as much as possible and report back.

Everybody that wants a souvenir, dox yourself to me for one and a pizza roll.

I'm kind of jealous. Japanese trains are pretty cool. Like the Hello Kitty train that's debuting in June.

Send a postcard to OPL and sign it with "Shigeru Miyamoto" instead.

I hope they'll built an AggRetsuko-themed train with Death Metal Karaoke Boxes.

I heard on NPR that the really famous fish market in Tokyo (it's centuries old and a UNESCO world heritage site or something) is getting permanently shut down within a few years because it is a traffic obstacle to the 2020 Olympics infrastructure buildup.
It's from the 1930s, and the road they want to build through the side of it was planned for decades. The Olympics is always an excuse for cities and countries to push infrastructure backlogs. The market is being moved to less valuable real estate on landfilled island further in Tokyo Bay, which is more convenient for ships. UNESCO declared Japan's fish diet which the market represents as cultural heritage.

(Really though, go to Asakusa and go to Senso-ji, the big shrine there, aside for ghostyen-begging for me, it's really pretty and you won't regret it.)
Bleh, skip Sensō-ji unless you want to be like all the other obnoxious tourists. If you're going to Kyoto, it's not worth it because you will likely see some authentic Buddhist temples. Also, Ueno Park and vicinity has some Edo period shrines and temples, is the main cluster of Tokyo's museums, and closer to most attractions.

I tell you hwat, the trains here a legit impressive. Affordable and always on time, been packed like sardines a few times.

Staring out the window on the bullet trains with headphones has been a highlight so far.

Fucking THIS!

You should try and sample as many flavours of Kit-Kat as possible because I hear they have some insane ones over there.

haha I've been doing precisely that, quite fond of the strawberry flavored one.

in fact I should go look for a giant candy store

I'm actually planning a trip for next May/June. Yen is down even more than it was the last time I went. Last trip I did the usual route from Tokyo to Hiroshima and back. Round two looking to get more into the countryside. Still mapping it out since once you get off the main line of cities on the coasts, trains and busses get a bit harder to find and I don't think I wanna deal with renting a car.

Did look into a motorcycle rental for the hell of it but it was like $200 a day.
