I have those and finished them, the Zero Escape series, Code Realize, Amnesia, Norn9 Var Commons (i hated the real ending in this) and played a bit of the Psycho-Pass VN

I played psycho-pass but for me it was a one time thing. I wanted to get into it but felt a little bland for me personally. Love the concept of it though.
 
I'm mostly a fan of the VNs that throw in some sort of minigame or other mechanics rather than the traditional Pick of 3 options for different flags, but if the story is interesting thats enough for me.
The first Dangan Ronpa was pretty good although I never got around to any of the sequels but I'd like to at some point. The Zero Escape trilogy is probably be my favorite even with how disappointing ZTD ended up being.
I remember really liking Saya no Uta when I read through it mostly because of how miserable and grim everything felt in it.
I just finished Steins;Gate and at first there were some things that seemed kind of bizarre and too anime-ish to me, but when I got towards the ending it kind of cleared up how some of the bizarre things could be justified. The ending left me with a major curiosity due to the -0.8 worldline not happening and ending back in the 1.0/1 worldline. I imagine that would probably be addressed in the sequel, unless I completely misunderstood something. After I do SG0 I was actually thinking of going back to Ever17 because I never really got through all of it and its been years.
 
There's a lot of VN with gameplay if that's your thing. The Baldr Sky series was and probably still is the best VNs ever created. Symphonic Rain is a superb romance story with rhythm gameplay elements. Kara no Shoujo is a interactive adv murder mysteries. And anything by Eushully if you can tolerate the high amount of h scene.

If you're into mysteries like danganronpa, 999 or stein gate, there's some excellent VNs without gameplay too. The Higurashi/Umineko series, Chaos head and its sequel Chaos child, Cross channel and The devil on G string just to name a few.

Also, you can't say you play Visual Novel until you played The best eroge ever and OMGWTFOTL tbh.
 
Gotta give an obligatory suggestion for Doki Doki Literature Club. I know it's over hyped and the fanbase is kinda spergy, but it's actually a really well-done VN.

From those selection I'd recommend Muv luv and G-senjou no Maou. But for the love of god go for the one with voice.
Tokyo Babel and The House in Fata Morgana is decent, but not as good.
Crystalline got an A for effort and not really much else. The animation and voice was okayish, but the story is bad and the 'minigame' was shoehorn in at the last minute and make the game worse. Pretty popular though, so maybe it's just me.

Shibuya Scramble is supposed to be pretty good (own but haven't played it yet).

TSC and The 25th Ward are absolute batshit insanity. They're made by Suda so they're extremely stylized and while the former is more straight-up noir the latter injects more of his trademark humor into it (such as a character having to beat assassins in Dragon Quest battles every time they use an ATM). They're absolutely worth playing just don't go into T25W expecting a plot that's even remotely comprehensible.
 
I wish I could play visual novels, but I stupidly went with a Mac and nothing's compatible with it. So I had to rely on gameplays if I wanted to know/see anything the anime adaptation didn't have. Thus far, I've only ever found the full playthroughs of CLANNAD and Higurashi (which were really good--the anime are some of my all-time favorites, but the VNs are something else--Yukine Miyazawa's route was the weakest link, and the anime did it so much better. probably to make up for lack of Kappei), I tried looking for the other Key/Visual Arts VNs and Ef, but no luck. Then again, it's been years, they might be out there now.

The only VN I could say for sure I played because it happened to be compatible with Mac was a fan-made game of CLANNAD involving Tomoya's mother (why the fuck can't I remember this title), which wasn't too bad. Could be played all in one day, so I was able to go through the two routes, and I enjoyed it. And apparently Corpse Party was mistakenly labeled as a visual novel at one point, so guess I can't count that lol. (Also the Umineko Gold Project going radio silent is the worst thing ever, proving this world is cruel.)

So should the day ever come when I get myself a new computer that can play VNs, which titles work best for a newbie? (Pretty futile, but I'd prefer to avoid eroge whenever possible, so clean versions will have to do.)

it's an easy recommendation if you like vns. the cheesy japanese tv cop drama style is a fun change of pace and the writing has much more momentum than the usual fare. a few of the characters are really fantastic. also kind of remarkable to have a game with so many characters who aren't static in development. the choice system is more about seeing goofy bad endings. there's virtually no deductive thinking involved. but the first half of the game is much stronger than the end imo.
you expect from the start that all the plot threads are going to link up, but the way they merge is the tom clancy-ish action thriller side plot takes over. it just seemed more and more contrived to me.
also holy fuck the text slow, goddamn. but overall a good vn.
 
been such a long time since i played a VN. used to read plenty of them in early 10. ever 17 ,yume miru kusuri, little busters, swan song, family project, fate stay night etc. but back then alot of stuff was untranslated at the time so i never got a chance to fully get into some at the peak of my VN interest. now i more or less lost the desire to play them. growing old dose that i guess.

Yeah, it's an H-Game, but it takes awhile before you get to those scenes, and I was spending far too much time laughing my ass off before those ever showed up.

Majikoi were one of the VN that was unfinished when i played it. it was great and i was sad when i got through everything that was translated.
 
I'm just starting to get into them myself, they're good for when I want to play something I don't need to have a high reaction time for. Someone on KF suggested The Silver Case, so I grabbed that and its sequel. Just started playing it. I've also got the first three Danganronpa games on the soon to play list. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm getting older but I'm finding a lot of genres that I didn't used to enjoy more enjoyable and I've been open to checking more things out. My steam library is kind of schizophrenic because of it, lol.
