Land is rising again
Kristín Jónsdóttir, head of department at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that land is beginning to rise at Svartsengi again.

In the Met Office announcement about the course of the eruption earlier this week, it was stated that land had not been observed rising recently, which indicated that magma was not gathering, but emerging immediately in the eruption as lava.

Kristín says that there were indications of balance in the system for a while, as it looked like as much magma was flowing into Svartsengi as was leaving.

However, the latest measurements show that more is now coming in, than going out.

It doesn't give us any clues as to whether the eruption is over or not?

"We can only say that there are no indications now that the eruption is ending," says Kristín.
 
I have been seeing that the magma chamber is still inflating even with the small eruption that is still ongoing.
Today there was a small bit of the lava that spilled over on of the defensive walls as the lave is slowly getting thicker. Not really moving anywhere still.

Land continues to rise at Svartsengi. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, it can be estimated that around ten million cubic metres of magma have been added to the intrusion under Svarstengi since the eruption began on March 26.

Since November, either an [underground] magma flow or an eruption has occurred when the magma volume reached 8 to 13 million cubic metres

Lava is over flowing some of the barriers towards the power plant and blue lagoon and is 1.2km away. They're working on pumping water on the lava and make a new lava barrier to keep protecting everything.
the current eruption might have stopped earlier today, but there is still lots of lava that will take a while to cool and solidify.

About an hour ago on the live stream there was a change with what looks like a gas or ash plume of some sort starting. I don't see an update yet on vedur.is (iceland meteorology office) on it.

How big could it get? Is it going to be a few hundred years of that fissure leaking and they end up with a few acres of new land or could it make some of the nearby systems pop off too?

I think this particular system is just going to ebb and flow like this for a while. I read that this could be the start of a several hundred year cycle after the area being fairly quiet since the 1300s or so. I don't think it's really linked to other volcanic systems in Iceland, but there is a glacier that's melting from underneath on on of their larger volcanoes.

In other fun news, the lava could be going over unexploded US army ordinance from the 50s.

It has stopped for now, but the ground is uplifting again.

  • Ground uplift has started again in the Svartsengi area
  • The eruption lasted 14 days
  • The hazard assessment is updated

The eruption which commenced on 22 August is now declared over, hence the hazard assessment has been updated. The main changes affect Zone 3, where the eruptive fissures opened at the beginning of the eruption. Zone 3 is now assessed to be at high hazard level (red) since the likelihood for vent openings, gas pollution and tephra fallout are assessed to be lower than before. Zone 6 is now assessed to be at considerable hazard as the likelihood of gas pollution is reduced. Within Zone 1 (Svartsengi) hazards are assessed to have either low or very-low likelihood.
Ground uplift has started again in the Svartsengi region indicating that magma has started accumulating within the magma body at 4-5 km depth. IMO will continue monitoring the ground deformation rate, but preliminary results from geodetic modelling indicate that the magma is accumulating at a rate which is like those estimated in periods which followed the end of previous eruptions.

The sketch shows the ”closed” system when the magma flows from depth (red arrow) into the Svartsengi reservoir to a shallower level at 4-5 km (orange domain) causing an increase in pressure and measurable ground deformation at the surface.
