Voltron Fandom - Bury your gays!

Yeah, the critic score on RT was fairly high. 86%, in fact. But fans think only THEIR opinions matter and have any bearing on a show's quality or longevity. While fans account for a big chunk of the ratings, so do critics, and critics are a LOT pickier cause it's their job. So obviously the season wasn't the horribly gaybaiting fridging OOC badfic of a train wreck the fans claim it is.
Which is ironic since the same people cheering when Voltron got a low audience score flipped when She Ra got a 50% audience rating. Double standards much?

So it seems the once-planned VLD last comics won't be made, probably because LF is merging with another company.

Unsurprisingly, the butthurt "woke fans" are fingering themselves to orgasm. Because IF WE DIDN'T GET OUR SHIP oops OUR ENDING, THEN NO ONE SHOULD BE HAPPY!!!

"CANCELLATIONS ARE BAD!!! Except if the media didn't give me my ship or isn't tailored to my non-shipping whims. Then it can fucking die" :story:
Well that certainly wasn’t a biased review. Nope not one bit.

It’s hilarious how people in the comments are sucking off Lion Forge, forgetting that the company is literally going bankrupt.

LMAO, the passive-aggressiveness of this bitch and their posse. ”I liked this show until s8 reminded me I wasn’t the one making it and I couldn’t force the writers to give me the ~ship~ ending I wanted weeeeeeeeeh”

So here's a question: Was it ever possible, for a time, to be able to kill the root of the problem before it got out-of-control and turned a dumpster fire into a nuclear meltdown? What could've been done to have made the fanbase less shitty?

I don't know if anything would have helped, honestly. The Voltron fanbase has been a raging dumpster fire since day one. But I do think it would have helped if the creators had been honest about their intentions - they did bait the fandom a bit during the series run, kind of going "oh well we could go there" etc. that only egged on the fetishists and made the actual gay viewers angry.

ofc most of the actual gay fans are just, afaik, reasonably going "hey guys, what you pulled in this show was kind of awful, especially the way it ended for the only gay main character, can you do better," while it's the fetishists screaming from rooftops and celebrating cancelled comics and stuff.

That's not what I've seen, sadly. Many "LGBT fans" have been hideously entitled and bitchy about season 8, have called anyone who didn't hate it "straight" (conveniently erasing many LGBT fans who DID at least appreciate it), have insulted JDS and LM either directly or passive-aggressively, and/or have tried to shamelessly profit from the general disappointment so they can plug their "How I Am Personally Offended That This Series Ended In Ways I Disliked" 'rants', etc.

Many LGBT fans are, as far as I see, just as entitled and childish as the fetishists, just in more manipulative and smug ways. Via claiming they're offended in the name of ~LGBT fandom, they do their best to silence anyone with different opinions via the typical "if you don't agree with me YOU'RE HOMOPHOBIC"... not caring that many of these people with "different opinions" are LGBT too. Because to many of these these "actual gay fans", liking or tolerating season 8 makes you automatically "the enemy" and "a straight fan".

(And even more, many of these "LGBT fans" have said it's more homophobic to have a gay guy married to another guy than having him dead or single. Rushed as the wedding was, calling it homophobic is imo hypocritical - and especially when you see that these "LGBT fans" tend to ship the gay main character with another guy, meaning they're more offended that their ship isn't canon than any actual homophobia there.)

Thank you for clarifying for me. Honestly I've only kept sporadic tabs on what goes on in the Voltron fandom since about season two, it's just too full of fetishists and weirdos. Most of the LGBT opinions I've seen/heard have just been mine and my gay friends (consensus: deeply disappointed by the whole "Shiro is gay! He has a boyfriend you've never heard of in like seven seasons! And he's dying!" plot twist but couldn't care less about or actively hate other ships).

I think that said I can't blame people for speaking out about it, if they're actually LGBT (especially if they're gay) as long as they aren't insulting or terrible about it (accusing people of being straight for disagreeing with them and stuff), because the way they ended the series for Shiro in particular was pretty awful on a "gay representation in fiction" level and it should be talked about. I just wish there were sane and non-toxic people doing the talking about! And maybe they could do it without shilling for their crappy fetishistic uwu yaoiz ships...

(I'm new so idk if that counts as PLing please let me know if I've overstepped!)

I don't see your comment as PL-ing? Explaining a bit of your POV and what you've seen isn't powerleveling, you haven't gone overboard on it. You're doing well, so no worries.

I'm a bi gal and I think Shiro's ending could've been far, far worse. Fairly sure he was supposed to STAY dead after s2 like the guy he was based on (the original Shirogane from GoLion) so Keith would take over and be the lead character, but then DW was breathing on their necks to bring him back AND Keith's Va had schedule problems. And it WAS hard for them to keep Shiro gay, LM said that she and JDS were told several times "that guy's his straight roommate, NOT his boyfriend, write their scene/s like that!!" by the highter-ups and when they finally got the green light for Adam to be Shiro's former love interest, season 7 was already there and they couldn't do much more with them.

Personally, I believe Shiro's ending still counts as at least baby steps. Yes, the wedding was rushed and I wish that he and Curtis had more interactions in canon. But TBH, it IS important to see a gay guy living to the very end of a series (and especially one were many characters died) and marrying another guy on screen. Calling an actual male/male wedding "scraps", "homophobia", "no homo" and "not good enough" is... uh, not good. You (general you) can dislike it and think it's flawed, and you'd likely be right, but the level of bitching over it is really overboard and reeks of massive tittybaby entitlement, often masked as "I want LGBT rep.

(It's more obvious when you see many of these fans who cry "season 8 was terrible, Shiro's ending sucked!!!" turn their backs and schlick themselves raw over Shiro and Keith. I bet that had Shiro married Keith instead of Curtis, or had they gotten open endings that could be seen as "they may hook up later".... these same "(LGBT) fans" would defend season 8 with their lives even if it still had Allura dying/ascending and/or Lotor not having his 'redemption arc'. :story:)

Thank you! I'm an insecure noob lmao.

I don't disagree with you! And it sucks that it had to be like that - that it was so hard for them to just have a gay character in their media, that's a much bigger problem than how things turned out in the show of course. I didn't know that context and I really appreciate your sharing it with me.

I honestly have such mixed feelings about how Shiro's story ended. I think ultimately it IS good, especially with the context you gave me about what happened behind the scenes, because it is gay representation and there was a gay wedding! and it's really, really hard to find any gay representation in animation at all ever. Also, as a lesbian, I'm so used to my "representation" consisting solely of "look at this lesbian! She's gonna sleep with a woman on screen and then die a miserable death!" that it's kind of refreshing to see a gay character who doesn't die an on-screen death after being used as jack-off fuel for straight people, but it's tainted by the context where they were like (iirc) "btw Shiro is still dying and he's gonna die soon just not right in front of you". So I think it's ultimately good as, like you said, baby steps, but it's very flawed and leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth (though not as much of a bad taste as the fandom does).

(Oh GOD yeah those fans just piss me off really. But you're 100% spot on. They'd even be celebrating if they'd had Shiro completely straight as long as they didn't hook him up with a woman in the end so they could pretend he and Keith can be together or whatever. It's so nasty. They literally would rather ZERO representation for gays than a pairing that they don't prefer.)

Ah, I'm fairly sure that Shiro ISN'T dying slowly. There was no indication that his clone body had the disease that he originally had, and in practice it'd be VERY inconvenient for Haggar to have an ill Kuron if she was gonna use him to spy on the Voltron team for what could be potentially be a long time. So yeah, after Kuron/the clone's body and his soul/mind more or less merged, he's most likely healthy and not going to drop dead anytime soon after the end. The body in itself WAS made via Galra tech (maybe mixed with Quintessence handling and Haggar's magic), so having the illness healed is not that impossible.

(Yeah, true. I saew people bitching that Shiro wasn't "gay-coded" enough for their tastes aka didn't have his personality totally rewritten to center on his sexuality and that PISSED ME OFF SO BAD. They even wanted him to reject girls with the cliched "sorry girl I'm gay" bs and I was all "bitch are you for REAL? That's not homophobic or misogynistic, not at all")

Oh awesome, thank you for letting me know! I lost track of all the convoluted later plotlines and just heard someone complaining about it and.. ridiculously assumed I could trust anything the Voltron fandom said lol. In that case my only issue with the whole thing is the "suddenly appearing out of nowhere boyfriend" but I do understand that what took place behind the scenes kind of forced that to happen.

(Oh my god, can I possibly express how much I despise people who want all gay characters to be walking stereotypes? Guys, we're supposed to be fighting for the idea that gay people are just human beings and that our sexuality, while important to us and our lives, isn't literally everything about us! Those people make me break out in hives, I swear. I bet you 85% of the people complaining he wasn't "gay enough" were those fujoshi nitwits that crowd up every fandom with their homophobic, fetishizing garbage.)

And IIRC a good chunk of LGBT fans actually DID like the wedding for being a baby step and a push towards more mlm representation in cartoons. Cartoons have been mellower about lesbians but they're still a little touchy about gay men unless they're in the background.

Word of God said Shiro's new body was disease-free. It was never brought up in the show, which would've been helpful, but you also raise good points about Haggar. Her perfected Kuron had to be perfectly healthy or he'd be useless, can't have her spy dying on her.

And yeah, Shiro isn't even the type to reject a girl so flippantly. And a few people wanted the girl to be Romelle, who's already lost her whole family and had to deal with a lot of crazy shit in so little time AND is already shat on by Lotor stans for outing him as a mass murderer. Guess they thought she deserved even more bullshit by having her be humiliated and shamed for foolishly hitting on a gay man!

When the fanbase hated Kate "Pidge" Holt for NOT being trans, I knew the fanbase was dead on arrival
They did? I thought Pidge was super popular at first for being a female Paladin who was a nerd and Not Like The Other Girls. From what I've seen fandom only started hating her after the finale for getting a good ending while Allura didn't.

Plus in both the original GL and DOTU, Amue/Romelle was the closest to a love interest for the second Shirogane/Sven. OFC some people would want HER to be the girl their pod!Shiro would reject, because in the old continuities SHE was the one who either almost got the guy's dick (GL, and the "almost" was just because he died at literally the last moment) or actually did (DOTU, where the second season had him surviving and dedicated a good part of Sven's [rather limited] screentime to his and Romelle's romance). If the "stupid girl" who dated or almost dated Shiro in the older series is denied his romantic love in this one, it validates these idiots: "LOL NOT EVEN THE SHOW'S VERSION OF HIS EX CAN GET HIM TO STOP BEING MLM, LOL LOL LOL".

I remember some people RPing Pidge as nonbinary or trans, but at least outside Dumblr that died out pretty fast. Other than that, IDK.

I got this thought last night right as I was falling asleep, but it's a legitimate question that needs to be asked; will cross-post in the shipping thread because it's relevant there, too.

How many of these fans who're whining about their ship are actual fans? I'm serious, if they're actual fans of Voltron, they wouldn't let their ship sinking get them this upset about the whole show. They claim they liked it up to a certain point, and while there are good criticisms about the final season(s), most of it just boils down to "BUT MUH GAYS". Some of them seem to realize there's so much more to the show than just representation, such as the lore, soundtrack, animation, character arcs/development, designs, etc. that make the show what it is, and they do appreciate those at the very least.

But the shippers? The ones who're whining and throwing tantrums over their OTP not becoming canon? The ones who're making their own AU(s) to pass it off as canon? Are we sure they're actual fans and weren't just parasites latching on to it because the show had pretty boys?

"Girl, you gotta dump that giant robot, it keeps making you cry and denying you your OTP." "But it loves me! We loved each other for six seasons, we had so many good times and maybe if I cry enough it'll be beautiful and romantic again!" "...it's a show about a giant space robot. It was never beautiful or romantic."
