Warhammer: 40,000 - Rogue Trader - CRPG by Owlcat games

Started Heretic Psyker because im a heathen like that and wanna see how they explore being a heretic.

hey...
i was going to say the dlc kind of fixed that but not really

you are doing a warrior -> archmilitant right?
it most benefits that build
I have bad news for you, i just picked it and picked telepath and chose officer cause i wanted to play around the whole dominate others narrative. Like to play for the story not so much for the meta/best way to play X class. Unless im doing it on the hardest difficulty.

oh
well, i suppose it'll warrant you another playthrough sometime in the future

On the bright side he won't have to press "End Turn" all that many times considering how busted officers can get.
I've always found Officer to be one of the better options too. You can basically pump out shitloads of damage by just turn-enabling whoever you've specialized into hitting shit. No idea if its good at higher levels but breaking turn economy tends to be a safe pick.

I got to endgame on my first run, an Iconoclast. Without the DLC at the time and holy hell did it absolutely lose me. I feel like they should've stuck to focusing on the Drukhari or the Chaos faction as the actual, proper big final thing to beat down. Jumping through the portal to chase Inquisitor Dumbfuck and then see Necron just made me lose interest.

I just beat a greater daemon that was the driving force behind a sector wide plot to death. This is already enough of a good ending point for me.

If the DLC helps alleviate it being bland then I'll probably enjoy my Dogmatic run more.

Something i find funny and ive fallen into the tendency of doing is that my character never introduces himself, always has abelard do it no matter the circumstances.

I dont know what it is about this game, but I get maybe 2/3rds into chapter 2 and then just lose all interest. Which is a shame because I enjoy 40k, and I love RPGs, and there's a surprising lack of 40k RPGs. Think it might just be owlcat because I also had the same issue with WoTR.

Personally i play this games as if they were ttrpg sessions, in small bursts. Since ive noticed that unless you are someone who reeeeeally likes this type of games, youre gonna get burned out. This way keeps me motivated to see whats next and set expections of whats to come(combat, heavy dialogue, exploration) this way i wont be overwhelmed or lose interest because x thing is happening. Dont worry, i understand the fatigue that this games sometimes bring.

do you guys not?
oh dear
I like it, but with my limited time to play games, i cant afford to get burned out on games and so far i enjoy rogie trader so im playing it like i do with kingmaker and WoTR, sparingly and it works. Allows me to absorb the story better and in between gaming sessions i can ponder about the story and its characters and make theories about what happens next or whose behind X event etc etc. Liking a game doesnt mean no life-ing the game.

It's the writing for sure. There's a really good article from exputer who interviews Anatoly Shestov, an Executive Producer at Owlcat. He says so much had to be cut from the game.
"Shestov: Compared to the original plan, a sufficient number of systems and content were cut from the game at different stages. Here are some examples: the use of military vehicles, mass battles, craftworld, a full-fledged system of morality and fear like in the desktop prototype, changing the voidship, decorating the voidship, the production of goods and items in a trading empire, the trading system itself."

For example, there was supposed to be a Craftworld segment after Yrliet lost her Soul Stone that the RT could help her retrieve. It's why Argenta's quest was a single fight and she just describes what her journey was when she retrieves the One Star armor to the RT back on the flagship.
It was also because the game was rushed. Owlcat have over 450 people currently employed but they were working on RT after the success of WOTR. I think they got the project go ahead from Games Workshop, expanded their team from about 200 after WOTR sold a million copies, then started two more projects with RT. Then Owlcat, who were based in Moscow, had to get around the sanctions put in by the international community with the Feb 2022 invasion of Ukraine. They moved their studio to Cypress with satellite studios in Moscow and Albania.

Let me give you a quick time table.

September 2, 2021 - WOTR launches
June 2, 2022 - Rogue Trader announced
June 1, 2023 - Rogue Trader beta
December 7, 2023 - Rogue Trader release date

Between the end of WTOR and the announcement of RT, the invasion happened and they had to move the studio. That took months and hundreds of people had to go to another country. Then between the announcement and the beta, I can't confirm this but I do believe Games Workshop told them sometime in early 2023 they wanted RT to be ready by Christmas. So now they have less than a year to make a full CRPG with cutscenes and dialog and that's not going to happen.
When the game was finally released, it looks like RT had less than two years development time for the finished product and it really shows.

An example is here, on Euphretes 2 you come across a Rogue Psyker who can damage the party by summoning a demon. The original code for the event is Kiava Gamma, meaning this event and the hallway she's in was supposed to be in chapter 2 not chapter 4. The entire Euphretes 2 segment I think was supposed to be only Kiava Gamma but it got cut in half when they had to make a Mecahnicus planet for Act 4.

Another thing. They modeled Leman Russ tanks in the game but they don't move and you can't use them. Abelard has the famous Commissar quote of "Drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword."

This is when you realize that they recorded Abelard's VA saying this quote when he could use a Leman Russ in battle but couldn't put it into the game because they ran out of time to implement the vehicle system.

Some more cut things:

I want to like the game. I like the characters and figuring out the battle system of "Buff Abelard, Henrix and Argenta and go nuts." I found fun but as a CRPG, it was clearly a rushed production and Owlcat are now working on 4 projects, making me wonder if those are going to be rushed too.

Meh, game was still a fine playthough even when I did it in the apparently incredibly buggy initial release. 40k + crpg was like a dream come true that kept me engaged no matter what.

It's not fatigue because I'm not playing the game in binge sessions. The copious amount of freezes and crashes I had made sure of that kek.
Very informative and it's good to know I wasn't just defaulting to a lazy excuse in my mind when I would think the game was rushed. Only other 40K game I've played recently that gave me the same level of "this was rushed" was Space Marine 2.

Think I might dust this thing off and do a Dogmatic run to celebrate Trump's return. Pretty certain, unless I am recalling wrong, that psykers tend to fight each other for gear in this game so better not to make an RT one unless the plan is to bench the Inquisitor right?

Coming back to this game now after dropping it from early access (when act IV was unplayably bugged) I really like how a lot of the dialogue is tightened up and text often references back to old choices. A lot of the heretic integration is a lot better too as everyone would pretend your basically pretty much the same until much later in the game.

I still hate how commorragh brings everything to a grinding halt and takes away my spess combat and colony cookie clicker.

Also not the biggest fan of the blood cults introductory missions but I do like how the giant spesship is a bit more fleshed out now so it doesnt feel like the bridge with my bedroom nailed onto it.

do you want to really dominate? do you want to break the game and make it your bitch? then I have a build for you - more dakka. choose soldier from frotress world. with acrhmillitant as advanced class, pick automatic weapon and with drukhari shuriken catapult with heavy bolter as secont weapon you will kill both greater Daemon and final boss in less than 3 turns. Argenta is a child's play by comparison.

Owlcat announced that game sold million copies. I remember reading WotR took year and a half to reach that number, Rogue Trader needed year and month.

I'm replaying since I wanted to see full story of Void Shadows (I was in act 2 when it was released, ended up not finishing that playthrough anyway) and I'm now in early act 5. They really did a lot of good over the year with all that patching but they really should limit heroic acts to one per turn or something like that. My Rogue Trader is Iconoclast Noble Officer Grand Strategist so I can end the fight before it even begins, Bring It Down! on biomancer Idira to buff Chadelard or Marazhai, followed by You. Serve Me., Voice of Command, Air of Authority and Inquisitor Tenent. When I use Officer heroic act to give full turn to Warrior, there's enough momentum to activate his heroic act. I can wipe out effectively everything that doesn't have invulnerabilty phases. If there's anything alive left, there's always Iconoclast skill to let ally activate heroic act for free.

I'm doing Yrliet "romance", and I think it shouldn't conflict with rest of romances. If I didn't know it's classed as romance, I'd never consider it as such and would view it only as part of her questline. I disabled jealously in toybox to also see Kibellah's romance, hopefully nothing breaks.

Void Shadows itself was awesome dlc, hopefully next one will be as good or better. Once they release it, I hope they'll keep making more, and my personal wish is for Ork companion.

In general, it must be one of my favourite games ever, bought it on release, and played to the point of staying up until morning for night or two. It scratched an itch I didn't even know I had.
