Why not pirate stls?
Can't exactly go to pirate bay for them, probably a combination of 3D printing not being that common and Games Workshop cracking down on any remotely similar STL.
Also I don't think there has been an official STL leak. Most of it seems to be people duplicating (through manually copying the model in some 3D software, scanning a model or a combination) or taking design inspiration and making their own model. Obviously a duplicate would be copyright infringement but the later is a bit less clear since GW doesn't own the concepts such as power armour, robot skeletons etc. You actually end up with some very interesting and unique 40k-esque concepts that way. So it's certainly easier to go to minifactory search for something like chaos (examples below) and get similar looking models.

As an interest bit of information, the eight pointed star of Chaos is directly taken from the work of Moorcock... along with the entire concept of Chaos, although GW did simplify it significantly over the years.

I mentioned I have my own mega earlier, but I'm in the middle of doing some badly needed sorting and whatnot with it before wanting to share it. There's a public telegram "STL Warhammer 40k" for anyone interested, though. Lots of good stuff in there, including works from VoD who makes some literal 1:1 9th ed necrons and tyranids.

Why the heck would I want to pay for 3d printed stuff? If I wanted to pay, I would get the GW.

Chinamen will do that without the need for a super expensive piece of hardware that you need to buy materials for.
Because it's cheaper than GW but better quality than recasts? Note, this of course matters where you live and what $15 is to you.

Edit - This also assumes the file you want isn't in the public sphere yet. You can wait and maybe someone will buy it and upload it....or maybe not.

GW is overcharging you for plastic while cracking down on fanimations.
They want $44+ for just three physical pieces of plastic roughly 50x80mm. If I want more I need to be prepared to spend another $44+.

Some dude on Cults/Thingiverse put time and love into designing a 3D model of that same alien.
He is asking $7 for a file which I can use to infinitely print as many as I want.

Yeah free shit is fun, and I'll use it when I can, but comparing paying an STL designer versus paying GW its no comparison.

Speaking of STL files I think there was a somewhat 40k related channel called neckbeardia that was selling knock off 40k models. I say was because iirc their channel got nuked somewhat a few weeks ago (although I think it wasn't GW this time).
The channel was mainly a couple (mostly the girl) reading random /tg/ threads/storytimes they found, Wasn't the greatest content out there but I think they where about to have a kid so that kinda sucks.

They did get yeeter

They're back. Been back for awhile now.

They also have a site for selling minis.

What did they dare copy from GW?

How dare they incorporate spikes and tentacles into their own built from scratch model.
Those would have made perfect Possessed for Nurgle Marines.

They literally use the phrases "Nurgle" and "Orks" though. They can't claim it's something unrelated and original. It's shitty GW did something but the designers could have gotten around it. Fuck, call them "Warriors of Gurgle" and they could have pleaded ignorance.

Oh, I couldn't tell because the KS is scrubbed and the article didn't show any of that. Why would someone be dumb enough to literally use "Nurgle" though?

*Edit* Funny that the infringement claim doesn't mention "Nurgle" or "Orks" though....just Death Guard.

There are obviously way to close to actual plague marines and to think otherwise is crazy.

And GWs Orcs are obviously way too close to Tolkien's Orcs and to think otherwise is crazy.
GW are nothing more than plagiarists who get mad about plagiarism.
Its nice to seethe and all but the point is what did you expect when youre literally throwing up models wearing mk 3 legs and shoulders then directly advertising them as alternatives.

And there lies a pretty interesting discussion regarding copyright.
Which design elements exactly does Games Workshop own? Now this has never been tested in court (as far as I know) and at the end of the day it's up to a judge (although GW is in Britain, so god knows what weird system they have over there) and copyrights don't work like patents or trademarks where you need to explicitly state which elements you want to protect.
There is also consideration for transformative works (although that is always vague).

Well it's not literally because the armor is actually different from the plague marines I still have from my 8th ed box set. Not just the poses, but the actual structure of the armor. Sure, that's nitpicking. But when it comes to GW, any grain of nitpicking is good enough for them.

its was the fact that they looked similar and mentioned GW ip's in their kike-starter, thats literally it. There are absurd amounts of other legally distinct miniatures just out in the open under the name "blood angels" or "space templar" or "space skeleton"
