I can tell there is a catch. Its too good to be true.

Usually I'd agree with you there but Squats were in the leak from last year that more or less called everything so far. I believe GW is fucking with people by releasing this as a joke at first and then a Squat KT will show up for the next box.

Not gonna lie I never really got why people have such a hard on for squats. Yes I agree the way the we’re written out of the story was half arsed as half arsed gets but it’s just another imperial faction / unit and we have enough of those in game.

Here's the equivalent W-C post about it.

And as a reminder...

It’s a nostalgia thing and a desire to not have models/factions be removed. Like how Bretonnia and Tomb Kings have grown in popularity after Gamer Workshop discontinued them.

A sense of incompleteness.

People like dwarves.

I absolutely, unironically would start a Squat army, for the luls. Or at least a Kill Team.

Problem is, I don't know of what kind of "hook" their army would have that isn't covered by one of the other Imperial armies or covered by the Infinite Space Marine Range. What would they be, exactly? Imperial Guard, only not?

Maybe some sort of cross between IG and Custodes/Tau? More focused on smaller individual tanks/vehicles/etc?

There's a sense of "what could've been" with Squats. Though I was a child at the time, I remember when Squats were an actual army, and almost picked them over Tyranids as my first 40k purchase. The Exo-suits looked silly, but everything looked silly at the time, and I'd like to see what a modern take on Exo-armor would look like.

Maybe something like the admech since iirc the squats where more negotiated into the imperium then conquered like mars due to Big E's second biggest falling, being remarkably impatient for a several thousand year old immortal.
I don't know maybe its because I've been enjoying the first Gotrek and Felix book recently but I kind of see them as a more melee focused guard variant, although I do realizes that slayers probably aren't a accurate representation of most Dwarfs in combat.

Something like the police from Necromunda?

Do they really need a hook? Custodes are really just stronger space marines. All squats have to be is more uh... advanced IG

The funny thing is GSC also have the whole miner aesthetic and they’ve already used the steam punk look in AoS. Unless they all look like mini tech marines I’m not sure where they could go but that could be my lack of imagination.

Squats have a very heavy biker aesthetic going on. Judging from the april fools look we got they have some form of space suit/power armor. So my guess is short bikers in a form of power armor with perhaps a vehicular slant.

Melee Tau / Dwarven Iron Man. Individual mecha-units with a dwarven theme. Lots of Power Hammers, Axes, Close Range Guns, etc. Instead of larger mechsuits, smaller tanks and bikes and the like.

Real question is the lore. Where have they been? Why are they coming out of the great rift? Is this time fuckery going on? Like the rift accidentally yoinked them a few centuries into the future? Or they are coming from some alt-40k universe where they survived the Tyranid hive fleets?

I'm pretty sure that I've heard somewhere that its been hinted at that they hang out around the center of the galaxy.
Also it's not like every planet is well mapped, especially and subterranean scans. It's relatively easy to go under the radar in 40k.

Because they're Dwarfs taken up to 11, same as the Orks are well, Orcs taken up to 11, and the Eldar elves taken up to 11. And so they were basically heavy metal made manifest with kickass hair (both from the scalp and their beards), massive armored land-trains filled to the brim with guns, and bikers.

They're a remnant of the time when 40k was much more fun.

I'm still holding out a sliver of hope for them when the trigger gets pulled, but not holding my breath. It's GW, and those days are far far gone.

A legit question since, when I played them in Epic Scale they had a similar style in terms of stationary artillery and volume of firepower, but their infantry and lighter vehicular units were less plentiful and much more durable.

Also no Titans, but did have plenty of ways to counter them with their super-heavy vehicles (The Cyclops, ect...)
