They're a remnant of the time when 40k was much more fun.

I'm still holding out a sliver of hope for them when the trigger gets pulled, but not holding my breath. It's GW, and those days are far far gone.

A legit question since, when I played them in Epic Scale they had a similar style in terms of stationary artillery and volume of firepower, but their infantry and lighter vehicular units were less plentiful and much more durable.

Also no Titans, but did have plenty of ways to counter them with their super-heavy vehicles (The Cyclops, ect...)
Yep, those were good times. Granted I only came into 40k thanks to the original DoW, but from what I've heard things were really fun then.

As to their hook, probably a mix of Spess Merhines and IG. Lot of 3+ saves with an emphasis on CQC, and a lot of really big guns backing them up. So you know, Fantasy Dorfs. But given the 40k treatment of BIGGER and ANGRIER.

I don't use the word "colorful" lightly. Seriously, look at this...

And now the current day art...

It's not bad art, don't get me wrong, but the fun craziness is pretty much dead and gone. It's why the Clovis comic book was such a breath of fresh air, since it wasn't afraid to embrace the old ways of being violent and over the top but also with just that right dose of being ridiculous, and again, COLOR. This has never been a franchise that lent it'self well to fully embracing the dark and muddy look or feel unless you're talking Necromunda.

Make them angrier, but also be willing to do things like bringing back the Book of Grudges and developing new terrifying weapons purely out of spite...

The Book of Grudges is a fucking awesome concept and I would love to see it in 40k, simply because when there is only war there's no shortage of grudges.

Not really sure how they are going to fit in the game without doing what other factions already do.
I have kind of an idea. The Leagues are going to be a 'what might have been' for the Imperium -- a faction where humanity didn't fall into superstition and lose so much technology.

Their tech is probably going to be pushing Tau levels of bullshit, And they're not going to be listening to some whiny tech-priest faggot lecture them about 'heresy'.

So they are going to be the in between admech and space marine faction?

"Although their civilisation shares common roots with Humanity, the Leagues of Votann have an uneasy relationship with the Imperium of Man. Unlike their superstitious Human cousins, the Leagues emerged from the Age of Strife with far more of their ancient technology intact, including some infamous advances the Imperium would consider extremely heretical."

So... IG/Marine influences are the obvious starting point. Maybe some AdMech influences (looks like cybernetic feet?) and Tau (shoulderpads)... "Weird" (to the Imperium) hypertech that is heretical... the immediate thought would be AI. Robots / Mecha? Iron Men? Dwarves and Golems do make a good combo...

Maybe something like "IG Custodes" -- a more elite version of the Imperial Guard, like how the Custodes kinda sorta are elite Space Marines?

Got your perquisite Axe/Hammer... A Pickaxe probably fluffy addon to a trooper (or maybe it signifies a sergeant). What looks like one with a 3rd tech arm (techmarine equivalent?), and ... maybe an Apothecary equivalent? Some sort of scanning device on the left shoulder.

Old pictures from 1d4chan...

Was this them in 40k or Epic? Looks VERY weird. 1648914853382.png 1648914918637.png

From one of the 8E Codexes. So lore wise, officially the Imperium declared them extinct. Was this just a screwup, or was this the Escchilarchy / AdMech declaring their tech heretical? An entire (ab)human civilization existing and thriving without the Holy Emperor goes against literally everything the Imerpium stands for, after all.

I might believe the later since didn't they go "extinct" because some nids decided to beeline to the center of the galaxy to some near barren rocks with little to no biomass.
Also if abhumans are heretical I bet the commissars are going to have a field day finally having a good excuse to shoot some ogryns instead of being forced to tard wrangling them.

Not abhumans in general, but abhumans who absolutely refuse to surrender their culture and give up all their tech to the AdMech and regress to being basically a sub-par set of grunt troops for the Imperial Guard and MAYBE AdMech priests if they're very, very polite about asking for it?

Yeah there's plenty of groups in the imperium who would have a serious problem with that.

Warhammer Community post about the return of squats (with pics of the models):
A bit of re-imagining of their concept, but I wonder how much of their old traits (the trikes, trains, warsuits) will return with them?
Model-wise I like everything bar the white armour over it. It feels a little bit too 'generic space soldier'. I do like the rune insignia on them though.

Overall I am pretty happy we are getting a Squat faction. It feels like they are going to keep the Squats stereotypical Dwarfs, which I don't mind at all. My only worries is they decide to make them the 'morally good' faction in the setting.

The Kharadron Overlords in AoS give insight into a strong possibility of how Squats might play in 40k. KO play objectives well, loading up into vehicles and redeploying quickly, but they can't survive a straight assault the way other races can.

Whatever the case, I'm pulling out the old money shovel.

There's always the risk of modern-GW forgetting that the rule of 40k is that EVERYONE is a villain, especially the heroes, but we'll have to see how the fluff in the new codex + BL books shakes out. (I'm presuming we're gonna get a few Squat novels and maybe a Squat DLC for Gladius or something.) I'm not terribly worried; remember, they added a Space Communist Animu Mecha faction and it turns out they're an entire race of Psychic MKUltra Victims that use mind control and eugenics to perform genocides on planets they subvert into joining them. Basically Space China. If ever there was a faction they would have noblebrighted up, it would have been the Tau, and they're absolutely fucked up.

I'm presuming we'll see the Squats playing up the Dwarves aspect -- tropes would be... insular, grudges, industrialists, amusing drunks, capitalists, right? Also, fighting Orks and slaying Dragons (Tyranids). So, imagine the Necrons paying the Squats off to not intervene during a war, or the Squats fucking up a crusade because they attacked a Hive Fleet or Waaaagh before the Imperium wanted them to, or the Squats leaving the Eldar or a specific Space Marine chapter to their fate in some sort of petty revenge for something that happened 6,000 years ago.

My worry is as always with modern GW, that some intern or shitheel BL writer they hired at a discount will shove some woke shit in, like Non-Binary Squats or some stupid shit like that. It's kinda hard to shove wokeshit into Space Dwarves, though, so, we'll see how it goes. Maybe they'll make big fat woke looking BBW dwarf women that are the equivalent of 400 pounds, who knows?

If they do fuck up, they fucked up quite possibly the easiest faction to write for. They literally just have to bring Warhammer Fantasy Battle dawi in to the 40k, sprinkle some grimdarkness onto them and boom. A faction that everyone will love and buy (Because who doesn't like dwarfs?).

Epic scale there.
*SNIFFLE* Oh my beloved Cyclops. Such big guns (the main gun is designed to one shot Titans) such ridiculous little treads.

I could buy both explanations. I imagine abhumans competing on the tech front REALLY chaps their shiny metal asses.

Make her a named character in her own vehicle or some badass exo-suit (Dwarven Grom the Paunch?) and I could go with it. But will they?

Dwarves would be perfect for some of the sillier designs like the baby carriers or goofy AoS balloons, I'll huff the hopium and hope they turn out to be Orks 2.0 when it comes to fun instead of shorter stockier T'au with CQC.

The smelly dwarfs can do whatever I’ll take world eaters now

Squats, nice.

Depends on how many are needed to field an army, they may become my 3rd faction project.

I was eyeing demons of slaneesh, but squats sounds just more fun
