That, my good inquisitor, is heresy most foul.

To compare your average space marine fan to these foul heretics of tumblr is to compare the holy anatomy of man to the wretched greenskins that these tumblr heretics are more akin to. The tumblr landwhales are more similar to plague marines than an actual space marine, thou even there it might offend the Death Guard.
Orks know how to have fun. Tumblrites are incapable of fun.

Tumblr is more like the Dark Eldar. Freakish fetishes and a strong desire to hurt others in twisted ways.

Technically speaking they do know how to have fun. Just not the kind of fun we think of. Their kjnd of fun is watching somebody they dislike hurt emotionally and in some cases even physically. A good example is that Stevn universe fan artist who almost committed suicide because of their hatred towards her. They didn't feel any remorse of what they almost caused, in fact some wished that she did.

Well the majority tend to be brutish like orks, but as you said they are more akin to dark eldar. Does this make them into the haemonculii of the real world?

Dude you just described the vast majority of the irl player base let alone tumblr.
Maybe 10 years ago but not today. The player base is either 30-somethings with good jobs like me who can pour money into the game without remorse or spoiled teenagers who buy a bad army of shiny shit with mummy and daddys money and then tantrum when they get nuked in 3 turns by better players. My local GW branch barely ever smells of sweat and I've been in there for whole ten minute periods to purchase paint without mouth breathing fanboys slobbering about how Ultramarines are for losers or some shit. I think the fanbase is maturing somewhat, the real basement dwellers are being priced out which is where you get the "BLARGH GW is to 'aspensive!" sperging online because when you're 36 and still sleep in your childhood bedroom under faded pokemon sheets getting your mum to spend her pension on Orks isn't easy. As for the kiddies, they come and go and some of them develop into decent players. I think a lot of people are doing what I've done too, they collected as kids but never really got into the game but now as adults with easy cash flow they're getting back into it. It's good really.

To be fair though. GW is fucking expensive nowadays.

Not really when you adjust for inflation. You remember single mini blisters being between 5 to 7 quid but I've got Mega Drive games in my collection with price stickers on them from Boots (remember when they used to sell fuckin video games) for £20 and nowadays a new release is double that.

Everything you say here is in line with my experiences since i restarted 40k about 2 years ago, oh except the Ultramarines but, they are for losers and people should make you feel bad for playing them.
