how does one get into 40k tabletop as neither an eccentric millionaire nor a crack dealer?
Have a friend that has multiple armies. He can only play one at a time, and will likely appreciate having someone to play against. Past that, plenty of stuff on eBay or check to see if your local game shop does swap meets and/or consignment sales of minis - my friend bought 2000+ points of Space Wolves for $200 via consignment - half of them were even painted to tabletop standard.

one day I'll have that big ork/guard army I always dreamed of I'd say Krieg also but at those forge world prices...

If you want to start an Ork army, the Killdakka Warband box is still on Amazon for $170. 2x MSU Boyz, Nobz, Defkilla.Wartrike, Gretchin, Dakkajet. Mek with Shokk Attack Gun. Great start to an army.

Kill team?

If you don't intend to play at GW stores, buying a cheap 3D printer like the Anycubic Photon and just printing out models you get for free/cheap online will work out much cheaper over time.

probably not enough to make an army or at least a particularly diverse one
Also, look for cheaper 3rd party alternatives on sites like etsy. They'll often cost half as much as GW, and probably look better.

For example:

Official Kroxigor, $60. Looks derpy.

3rd party Kroxigors. Looks much cooler, under $20. You can probably find cheaper alternatives for a full third of any army you want. They won't let you use them in official GW stores, but don't know why you'd want to in the first place.

I also believe if he were to re-emerge back into the limelight, he would be decked in armor and weapons of xenos origin that allows him to fight effectively against Chaos Daemons, Necron Lords, Custodes Shield Captains, or even other primarchs.
It's a pretty cool idea, instead of being a force multiplier, have him go full Batman with insane gear to the point in going toe to toe with whatever is to dangerous for his legion to take on.

Tackle only one project at a time, one kit every one or two months and be on the lookout for discounted miniatures near you and online. Doing things this way works out just fine with regular armies, but for kriegers you really need someone to 3D print the rank and file models. The official plastic models are great but too expensive if you want to spam infantry.

So, I have been have discussions with people I know on what's next for Chaos.
At this point, Fulgrim and a revamp of the Emperor's Children line (New Lucius and Noise Marine models/upgrades) are coming in 10th Edition.
Also, Huron Blackheart is probably going to get an upgraded model very soon (much needed).
GW could have Kranon and his Chosen return as MTO.
After that, there are a few options.
- Word Bearers: Daemon Primarch Lorgar and 40K versions of Kor Phaeron and Erebus.
- Iron Warriors: Daemon Primarch Perturabo and an updated Warsmith model. Maybe give Honsou an official model.
- Alpha Legion: This is tricky. A model of Alpharius/Omegon would be an obvious choice, but perhaps there could be a model that serves a role similar to Exodus in HH or Phocron from "We Are One" - any Alpha Legionnaire can assume the mantle. Would be nice if a named model could serve as a Champion of the Legion. Sucks that Lord Arkos never got a model.
- Night Lords: Have Daemon Prince Krieg Acerbus get an official model since he apparently is the leader of the largest Night Lord warband in 40K. Update the Night Lords Chaos Lord model and/or a new Jump Pack Lord.
- The Fallen: Since Luther is free, why not give him a model? Also, give Marbas a model:

Who wouldn't want to have a model of that?
A revamp of the faction would be nice with new Fallen models (maybe a proper codex?).
- Rando CSM Warband: White Dwarf could cover this.

As for their loyalist counterparts, I expect Lion El'Johnson to get a 40K model soon.

I haven't played this since a kid but I've been stressed lately and thought painting some models would relax me. Sit there, focus on something, be calm...

Went into a GW shop and thought I'd pick up just a little squad of Eldar or Terminators or a character model or something. HOLY FUCK! £32 for a pack of, iirc, 5x Dire Avengers. I couldn't believe it. I looked for a warlock as a basic character model. A two pack for the same price.

They also had absolutely crap range - literally an Avatar, a Wraith Knight, a Guardian box set and a couple of other things like the warlocks and one type of Aspect Warriors and that was about it for Eldar. Maybe that was just the display and they had all the others in the back. But I remember going into those shops as a kid and they'd have whole walls full of blister packs, each with five models in. It was like a sweetshop except the sweets were made of lead. Anyway, I didn't ask if they had stuff in the back because I knew at those prices I wouldn't be buying anything anyway.

Jesus Christ!

Yeah it’s gotten pretty bad tbh. Long gone are the days you could get five minis for £5 and somehow without advertising GW is still the biggest war gaming company on the planet. Value isn’t a word in their company charter and the only number that matters
these days is the number of starter boxes they sell.
I still remember the time the £100 Christmas boxes were a full army but now you’re lucky to get a patrol detachment out of them. I just wish the other companies out there would stop walking around with their dicks in their hands and actually put up some real competition for GW. Warlord games has the ability to do so, even Mantic if they pulled their finger out since a lot of them are ex GW staffers.

I was prepared for some inflation but it's out of all proportion. I wonder if GW are essentially in a death spiral with their minis and it's just not noticed by people yet. They sell non-perishable goods that don't become outdated. I have a whole toolbox of old minis (the metal ones). And if there were some easy way to remove ten-year-old me's attempts at painting them I'd probably just use them instead. There's a small Eldar army (incl. the old non-giant Avatar) in there. 20+ years and I could still game with them if I wanted (and they weren't painted like Teletubbies had bukkaked them).

If they’re definitely all metal isopropyl alcohol will strip the paint clean off so long as it wasn’t enamel. Just leave them for a couple hours, take a fresh toothbrush to clean off the paint, rinse under cold water and repeat as necessary.

Haven't actually been in a GW retail location, but your experience mimics my brother's at his local GW stores. Check your local (non-GW) shop(s) - mine routinely undercuts MSRP by about 20%, and I've found a couple of online retailers that have similar pricing (though you lose a bit to shipping costs there). On top of that, you can likely preorder stuff that isn't in stock and they'll just call you when it arrives.

Doesn't make this a cheap hobby, but it helps.
