Wait that's a thing??
Yup, has been for a long time. GW was smart enough to realize that people would want to personalize their armies, so they've always left room in the lore for people to develop custom chapters/septs/hive fleets, etc., and a few of them have even been made canon over the years. You show me a Space Marine player who hasn't at least thought about designing their own chapter, and I'll show you someone who doesn't exist.

That's awesome! I had always just assumed that because the game was so large and dense that it didn't accommodate custom sects. Awesome!

I will play vanilla for a bit longer but now I have a concrete goal.

and was still on the board by the end of the game despite getting some major firepower thrown at it
At least the poor sod learnt an very painful lesson, that day.

Technically, that would be the Ultramarines. But going neutral might leave you open to something huge mauling them; just don't let your wife get an exocrine until you find something that can handle the bigger units.

It's varied from edition to edition, but the idea is that the galaxy is so big that you can squeeze in just about any kind of custom army you want and there'll be lore justification for it. You want to run an Imperial Guard regiment dressed like British redcoats with laser muskets? Go for it. Sisters of Battle in bright pink armor who wear the flayed skins of the Emperor's foes? Sure. Chaos Space Marine warband that doesn't actually worship Chaos because they think that's for weak-willed chumps? Knock yourself out. Tyranids who ate a volcanic planet and developed obsidian-infused carapaces and glowing bodies full of magma? Fuck yeah.

The only sticking point from a gameplay perspective is that you have to choose rules for them to run with. Space Marines have had greater or lesser degrees of flexibility over the years; for most of the game, custom chapters were required to use an official chapter's tactics, so you could say "I have an Ultramarines successor chapter that sticks very closely to the Codex Astartes" and use the Ultramarines chapter tactics for them, or "I have a Blood Angels successor that prefers stealth and sniping to all-out assault" and run them as Raven Guard. In the 4th, 8.5, and 9th edition codexes, there were customizable sets of tactics you could use to give extra flavor to your custom chapters, but in this edition you pick a detachment that comes with certain rules derived from specific First Founding chapters, but aren't limited to any of them specifically, so you could have a White Scars successor chapter who specializes in siege work or an Iron Hands successor that likes driving bikes into the enemy's face.

The yellow trim compliments the blue better then gold imo but it probably depends on what company they play as I distinctly remember red and green trim as well.
utrasmurfs are a codex chapter (basically THE codex chapter, considering who their primarch is), so they have red and green. pretty sure there were even some really old white dwarf official shots of it.

So. I keep hearing the word "techmarine" as I research ways to make my play a bit more aggressive.

Vetetan Guardsman seem compelling.

Also don't stress too much I have not actually spent any more money. Not my first money sink... but I can dream!!

I did want a tank...
Make sure that you get the one that's pimped out with the right kind of guns. Might be worth getting an Redeemer once your wife gets her gaunt swarm going on. Plus, it might scare off her Screamer if you have the right type of Marines inside it.

But Exocrines mainly exists for blasting people who are held up by other bugs who are trying to eat them. Sure the Land Raider will probably survive the barrage; but the Marines will get blasted the turn after they disembark to deal with what ever else that's surrounding the tank...And then the tank finally breaks down and your Techmarine finally gets eaten by the gaunt swarm.

Smurfs can also just have any colouring if you want them to, since the CODEX ASTARTES says that marines use paintjobs appropriate to their combat theatre, just with one pauldron coloured in chapter specific paint.

I think I'm going to branch out into Genestealer Cults eventually.

Change my mind.

Those Egyptian dudes are also cool. Liked them a lot in Total Warhammer.

The virgin camouflage proponent Guilliman vs the chad "you're bright yellow for a fucking reason" Rogal Dorn:
"Do not ask me to approach the battle meekly, to creep through the shadows, or to quietly slip on my foes in the dark. I am Rogal Dorn, Imperial Fist, Space Marine, Emperor’s Champion. Let my enemies cower at my advance and tremble at the sight of me

Imperial Fists are particularly cringe and I say this as someone who has to suffer a few enthusiastic fans on my local play group.

I need some help.

Started painting them back when ash waste box came out and stopped after doing the first layer of paint on most of them. Decided to paint them up now that I'm playing a bunch of necromunda but the color scheme that I had going just isn't doing it for me, don't plan on stripping them since this is a layer of primer and some speedpaint so it should be thin enough to cover with regular paint without loosing detail.

TLDR I need Ideas on what colors to use on my discount tusken raiders
