Also do other races have this much sub-faction depth?
Kinda sorta. All the main factions have several major sub-factions which have usually come with their own special rules (dynasties for the Necrons, hive fleets for Tyranids, regiments for the Guard, etc.) but the Space Marines always get the most attention because they're the poster boys. The nine First Founding chapters usually get a codex supplement of their own in each edition, and other notable chapters (mainly the Black Templars) have also gotten dedicated supplements with bespoke rules and so forth. That said, 10th edition seems to be moving away from the idea of distinct sub-faction rules in favor of generalized detachments like we've seen in the Tyranid and Marine codexes and the previews for AdMech and Necrons, but we'll see how that goes.

As for your Blood Angels box, you should be able to paint them in whatever chapter colors you like, unless it contains a unit that is specific to them and their successors, like a Furioso Dreadnought or Baal Predator.

And remember: successor chaptors is a fancy way to say Your Dudes. If none of the official color schemes catch your attention, create your own and call it a successor chapter.

Be mindful that some colors a much more difficult to paint and still look good. White and Red are probably the hardest, and Black can be tricky (hard to add "depth"). That said, Speedpaints by Army Painter REALLY help make it easier, especially for those colors. Just watch a few videos and try the slapchop method, it's very newbie friendly.

Also look at videos on brush maintenance/best practices, it'll save you money over time.

Which it does... would you mind explaining the implications of that?
Lore-wise, the Baal Predator is an IFV that's armed with flamers that the Blood Angels created of their own volition, but they refuse to share the blueprints because of the cogheads are an bunch of toaster-fucking autists. It's pretty much the reason why the Black Knights of the Ravenwing get the cool shit.

I forgot the story behind the dreadnought, though. Other than the fact that they've managed to get an librarian in one without some weird shit happening

As long as I get to kill some chaos marines I don't mind.
Well, it's allegedly against the Thousand Sons, this time around. So you can kind of guess on how boring the executions are going to be against their rank & file

Also remember to have fun and not go min-maxing. I fucking love the Captain Messinius model but as a plain Captain with a power fist, he probably works best in Assault Intercessors. Those are pretty mid in game. Do I care? Fuck no. Give their Sarge a power fist, stick them all into a Land Raider Redeemer, and go charge something holding an objective.

If you love a given model or models, find a way to make it work!
I love reading about min maxing, shit like Chapter Master Smashfucker is hilarious.

Same thing for the Furioso. The Blood Angels supposedly invented them a few millennia after the Heresy and refuse to share, although it really seems like it shouldn't have been that hard for other chapters or forge worlds to stick two CCWs on a Dreadnought chassis and call it a day, as the Ironclad pattern and that new melee dread prove.

I think Assault Intercessors are really slept on tbh- with a power fist Honour Vehement smash captain leading a unit of those that contains a power fist Sarge, you can get 10(!) strength 10 Power Fist attacks that hit on a 2+ and with devastating wounds, with 3 more hitting at sttength 8 on a 3+ while in Assault doctrine (from the sarge). You can use the Gladius [Lance] strat for +1 to wound and +1 AP since you're in Assault doctrine... and the unit ability makes you reroll 1s to wound unless its in range of an objective, in which case it's full rerolls.

Oh, and also add in 36 chainsword attack on top for the rest of the squad. Full price for this? 255pts, or 515 if you include a Land Raider Redeemer taxi. It's overall pretty great value.

But one of the "fun" things about 40k is just how stagnant technology is across most of the factions

Sweet! Just went to the store and they had Onslaught boxes to reserve for this weekend so I got one.

They also had a older Marine force with a hover tank. Will get that later.

New Tomb Kings are gay and lame.

I want ancient egyptian skeletons, not aztec skeletons.

Yellow's a real motherfucker too (weeps in Imperial Fist player), but agree that Speedpaints/Contrast are great and make those tough colors easier to do.

Without exception, prime your models white or some off-white color if the topcoat will be white or yellow. Priming black for those colors is just asking for it.

Red is interesting. It takes a lot of subtlety from what's usually under it. Black primer will grant the overall default red, which is shaded as dark. Priming with something pink (which is standard in car and F1 model kits) will give you vibrancy you've never felt before. Priming with a bright green will grant an odd effect that is immensely difficult to appreciate under shitty lighting.
The current fashion is to shade reds using violets or purple while highlighting it with a desaturated yellow. I'm not a fan of this because I avoid giving red any "oranging" and would rather be specularly white in places it needs to. Red is a a lot of fun because of just how different it will turn out with a modicum of modification.

Hell, becoming a space marine is a nightmare. In the first Legacy of Caliban book, Ravenwing, the collect I believe five recruits from a death world. One of them passed out from the shuttle flight off the planet to which the Dark Angels saw as a sign of weakness and turned him into a servitor for it. When they eventually implanted the recruits with the organs to become scouts, one of them became a vegetable from the procedure, so they reharvested the organs and killed the dude.

Also, given all the horrible shit that happens in Warhammer, regardless if it is Fantasy or 40k, no sane fan says they want to live in it. I don't care if I have a 100% chance of getting Sororitas or Eldar snuu snuu, I don't want to become bug food, somebody's flesh jacket or a guardsmen.

dear james workshop
