They recruit from a bunch of worlds. The oldest lore I have to hand is from the 4E dex (which is the second they got IIRC) and it doesn't go into any real detail:

My favorite thing about 40k, as a new comer, is how unfriendly it is to newcomers. "Here’s, like, 40 years worth of shit to sift through to get the gist if things. Good luck faggot". It's like diving into the EU of Star Wars. It's beyond alienating and I adore that.

My favote lore channel, Attenborough Lore, semi recently got hit with a cease and desist. Real kick in the knackers. Having Sir David explain Tau caste systems to me was amazing.. I haven't even bothered checking out the new vids since the AI voice change. And idk if I will. David's voice explaining 40k was something really special, and I don't think the channel has much hope of standing out now. At this point, you might as well just read a wiki, which is gay.

Some parts of the Imperium aren't the dumpster fire that the average Imperial world can be. The Ultramarine controlled sector for instance isn't nearly as bad and would probably be a nicer place to live than most of our third world countries
 
As much as I was disappointed by the Votann, I do really like Squat stuff in Necromunda, though I don't play it. That Skalvian Explorator is basically what I wanted all Squat vehicles to look like. It's like an old submarine had a baby with a space shuttle crawler. It reminds me of what the Orks see when they look at their own vehicles.

Yes and no, you can start from guards/marines and continue from there and progressively learn more about the setting. It's only when when you start diving into the wikis that there is way too much information to handle and you don't know what's important.
 
Okay let me know if I got this correct.

I can run my army as a Blood Angels - Sons of Sanguinius group and use all my goofy Blood Angels stuff. And then my regular Space Marines from the Leviathan box can fill in... right? Those guys are plain old "Adeptus Astartes", correct?

Maybe I need to ask a basic question: in Space Marine terminology, what words or names tend to be synonyms? As a newcomer it feels like there are three or four names used interchangably to refer to aspects of Space Marines.

You are correct about the Sons of Sanguinius thing. Under the current rules you can include any unit from the Blood Angels Index (free download) or Codex Space Marines (extra cost) except for units with a Chapter keyword that isn't Blood Angels. These are basically all the Epic Hero canon character models from other Chapters.

Space Marine and Adeptus Astartes mean the same thing. Space Marine organizations are called Chapters, they used to be called Legions. The nickname "Angels of Death" also refers to Space Marines.

Okay! Cool.

It is all squares and rectangles. Generic "space marines" can go anywhere unless otherwise specified, but chapter-aligned space marines can only exist within their chapter.
 
The release of the Necron codex has kind of deflated my desire to play the game right now. The new dynasties either don't look very strong or require focus on models a lot of people don't have, and the existing dynasty got nerfed. It looks like the strongest Necrons will be in 10th was on day 1. Is it common for a factions to keep getting nerfed while under a 50% win rate?

Sort off and kind off. Was the same issue with 9th edition, really what still makes the Necrons bogus as hell if you don't wipe a unit the guys resurrect, so either you sink all your shots into one unit or get super lucky in melee attacks.

Yeah, that was Tyranids for about a full decade. To this day Tyranid players are shell-shocked.

I'm torn on 10th Edition. I like that it feels less like Strategems: the Gathering, but so many fluffy rules have been lost. Armies have discarded a lot of their flavor.

Same here. It seems like GW listened to all the complaints about rule bloat in 8th and 9th, but then they overcorrected in the other direction and now there's no distinctiveness anymore. I was especially disappointed to lose the hive fleet adaptations right when I was finally starting a Tyranid army.

It really depends on the chapter. The dark angels are rather dickish when it comes to morality. Ultramarines are where it's at, but even then.... I've read the first 3 ultramarines novels. That shit was insane. The third novel was like watching the movie hostiles set in hell.

Our heros have to go through 7 layers of literal torture and it just keeps getting worse and worse. They make it but it's illuminating how rough fighting chaos can be lore wise.


Also Ive been playing the battle sister VR game lately. Its fantastic.



I don't know how lore accurate it is to duel wield las rifles and casually blow world bearers heads off, but it feels great.

You go through hellish training, hellish training, to then dedicate your life to only every fighting horrors then dieing in battle. Doesn't matter the chapter. Anyone who wishes they were a space marine doesn't understand the lore.
