Got around to assembling some models to flesh out my CSM army. I’ve decided that in order of “sucks to build” I rank them as follows from best to worst

Rubric marines
Legionaries
Khorne Berserkers
Plague marines

I fucking hate plague marines. They just don’t assemble nicely and I’m glad I’ve got just the one unit.

Anyone else have a model they just can’t stand assembling or am I just weird?

Anything that was made of Finecast. That stuff was fucking horrible to work with most of the time. Only Finecast mini that never gave me issues was a terminator Chaplain back when I played Dark Angels.

Finecast stuff and vehicles
its criminal that they charge money for the shitty finecast minis. If I'm hunting for something that would be in resin, I try to find them in metal.
As for vehicles, I just don't find them interesting
Generally for anything else, its whatever. I dont know what it is about d/eldar stuff, but I really enjoyed building them

IIRC Iron Hands have been historically better ruleswise for doing an artillery/vehicle-based army since indirect fire rules are almost all on vehicles for marines but if you wanna go Fists for flavor then knock yourself out. The whirlwind's a good buy because there's no obvious Primaris replacement yet so it's likely the kit will stay usable in-game without proxying it as something else.
Iron hands. It'd be a mostly black army, but it'd be easy to paint lol. Glad to know the whirlwind is still going strong. I'm not quite there to unlocking it in DoW, but even back in those old graphics, it looks good. It'll be fun having a physical model.

I think I’m gonna buy a plastic Malcador when I get an opportunity. I distrust GW and don’t really want to give them money but if my FLGS has some in stock then GW already got paid by them anyway, and buying one would just be supporting the store right?
GW is a bad company right? That seems to be the consensus among many ‘based’ 40k players. Why do people think that? I already know they don’t really respect their customers or the people who make fan works, and also are real money-grubs but is that all? Because that’s pretty much every company these days.
But man, I really like the Malcador model. It’s an older sculpt so it still has that grimdark 40k ancient-futuristic design aesthetic that brought me into the hobby in the first place. Much more so than the Rogal Dorn which feels like peak nuhammer vehicle design.

Dunno so much about fanworks, since GW never crashed down on any fan content or even mofos who sell STL files, only time they DID go after someone was when you had chucklefucks practically selling models that was a 1:1 copy of GW's.

I mean I don’t know how much power GW has over STLs since they can’t just copyright “Space Soldier lookalike”. Honestly I can’t help but wonder if you’re taking the piss or something because there was a very significant controversy a few years back when GW was basically censoring YouTubers who made Warhammer animations which raised a lot of people’s hackles, myself included. I feel like that’s pretty much the same thing as issuing copyright claims against fan art, which is gay.

They never censored any Youtubers, it was basically TTS guys using GW's mentioning their old CopyRight stuff (which upon closer inspection doesn't even affect content creators), to nuke their entire series because they didn't like what way it was going.

I didn’t particularly care for TTS I was talking more about SODAZ and Astartes who pretty much got the “Join us or delete your content.” Ultimatum from GW.

DA rules are out and they got fucking massacred from orbit. They got taken behind the barn and shot with no mercy. After how obnoxious they were in 9th and how obnoxious DA players were about their primarch I can't help but look at this and laugh.

I don't think they're issuing copyright claims. They're using their legal department to intimidate popular .stl archiving websites by threatening to raise copyright issues. In turn, the websites act as GW's unofficial jannies.

I used to upload almost everything I could get my hands on to all the major sites. The vast majority of it would get taken down fairly quickly unless I went to the trouble to obscure its existence. Giving it a weird name, making the default thumbnail something totally irrelevant, renaming files, etc. The stuff that tends to last the longest are paid files from 3rd party creators.

It also seems like the biggest enforcement arm, at least on Thingiverse, is community snitching. They know how to report stuff to GW reliably, but they have a harder time tracking down 3rd party creators (I guess). A lot of those files also come from creators that have disappeared, and there's probably a certain number of them unwilling to raise copyright issues out of fear of drawing attention to themselves. Trying to claim your "zombie space terminators with green energy flintlocks" models are a totally original idea takes some pretty big balls.

Another thing that put GW in everyone's bad books was the whole Chapterhouse ordeal. CH was making bits for space marines that GW didn't produce, so GW sued them. GW lost the case since they don't the rights to the term space marines (that's why they started changing a bunch of faction names in 6E/7E) and they weren't even making the stuff CH sold, but the length of the court case killed CH financially and they gave up on the company in 2018.

Russia refuses to enforce GW's copyright claims, hence websites like Wahapedia never get taken down. The people that run it have partnered with a Russian 3d printing company that's starting to get into selling high res proxies. They aren't using 1:1 scans, but really high quality and well designed proxies. They're trying to have a proxy available for every playable model in the game but they're not quite there yet. The prices I've seen are 50%-80% less than GW, but the biggest bargains come with buying smaller models in bulk. This is probably going to be the future for people wanting to pay for 3rd party stuff.

I thought this was funny and relevant.

That kinda depends, some of the models are def way more expensive than GWs stuff, specially if you factor in shipping costs.

I dont think they ever got the delete stuff ultimatum. They were offered a job from GW, because their stuff was well made and last I checked Astarters agreed because, youtube is youtube, but getting a steady paycheck from GW sounds way better than Patreon cash.

One mercy for DA players is the rules drop happened just before today’s pre order. I never got to play my DA during 9th so depending on bad they got fucked into the dirt I might just play them as regular space marines.

Just a random question, did the animator guy from Astartes ever managed to do anything for GW? I dimly remember his Patreon being now for a completely non-40k project, did he ever release something or it was the usual "we bought you to spite you" GW shenanigans?

Oh no, he did release a CGI based 40k series for Warhammer+. Heard mixed receptions about it.
