Going through a bit of a nostalgic phase at the moment and I miss how customisable some units were way back when. I was looking through a pdf of the 3rd edition Ork codex and the sheer amount of options available were insane. Not just profiles and equipment from their own codex but what they could take from the Space Marine and Imperial Guard codex.
You could legitimately include things like Razorbacks or Leman Russ Tanks which retained weapon options from their own faction codex.
There was also a unit called Lootas that you could equip with things like Mortars or Lascannons and watch them rain holy hell at BS2. If their ballistic skill was a turn off you could just arm all ten with flamers and be done with it. I yield oldhammer players.

Did a quick look and they seem to be several BAR variants slammed together. From the receiver back it's a 1918, the barrel has the cooling ribs of a FN Model D and what looks like part of the muzzle brake from a Colt Monitor.
There's no consistency on how the bayonet is mounted. Sometimes it folds under like a Type 56, which is neat. Darktide calls them Helbores and they serve as kinda a DMR, trading volume of fire for high damage and accuracy.

I've been getting a friend into 40k and he just finished the 2 part faction explanations from Bricky. I'm trying to drip feed him content based on what he likes and I was hoping to get some recommendations for a specific story to point him towards.
He like- The Officio Assassinorum, Mechanicus, Tzeench, Orks, Imperial Knights, and Harlequins.
He hates- Super soldiers in power armor and everything like it.
He's less excited by the action and more into characters and story telling.

For Mechanicus stuff there's the Forge of Mars trilogy about an AdMech explorator who goes in search of an ancient artifact only to learn the real treasure was
For Tzeentch stuff I'd be tempted to recommend the Ahriman series by John French. Yeah it's technically about super soldiers in power armour, but it's a lot less "ra ra space marines are awseomest" than most books involving marine characters.

It's somewhere in between. Sometimes, it's healthy to take a step back from the Jedi and the Space Marines, but hating them too much just makes you look cringe and autistic. Like a reverse-Matt Ward who always writes the Ultramarines as buffoons. SW had one of those, once.

The Amber King is a great 40K lore channel. His and the guests voices for characters along with the music he uses has moved me emotionally. His recalling of the loyalist Iron Warrior Barbious Dantioc and Imperial Fist Alexus Pollock made me cry.

1d4chan update: Root has apparently fucked off for good. Emails to his provided address are bouncing and the site now redirects to a web host stating that 1d4chan.org no longer exists. Some people have apparently got hold of the backups and are trying to resurrect the site on a new host.

Assassinorim, kingmaker. 3 members of the ordis try to depose a ruler of a knight world and set up a more pro imperium one.
If he likes that recommend him the Infinite and the Divine. It is a necron book but it's by the same author and same writing style as the above book but it's overall stronger and I agree a little with recent sentiment that it's probably the most newbie friendly 40k book out, even over the old staples like Cain, Guant, or Eisenhorn.
For character stuff I actually think some of the short stories are interesting. The last church often gets pushed as the best short story but I particularly like two of the malcador focused ones (Sigilite and First Lord) and a recent one was one that depicted Kahn's and Angrons first meeting after the latter literally got abducted from the middle of his rebellions last stand, although I'm sure other users have some noteworthy shorts they can name.

I legitimately like what they've done with the Newcrons and considering how well-written they've become by the various authors I can only conclude GW had no part it in and in fact was completely blindsided.

There are humorous gems and tidbits in 1d4chan amidst a sea of cringe tardrrhea typed by professional Comicbook Guys. I think it's meritorious to keep all of it.

That's what it sounded like in the thread, though they're apparently planning to delete or tone down pages that might get them kicked off their host service, like the one about lolis and whatever's left of Chris's old page, plus anything not related to tabletop games. I mainly want it back for the tactica pages and the funny stories like Old Man Henderson.
People were also asking what happens if this gets Root to emerge from his hidey-hole to bitch about what they're doing, and the response from one of the guys involved in the resurrection project was basically "fuck him, he wasn't doing anything with it anyway."

That's my point. They were so fucking terrible and widely despised for nonsensical bullshit that it fell to better men to create something of value from them. And surprisingly, they've succeeded.
