I was talking about getting banned from 40k discord groups by 3d modelers for buying files then giving them away for free and you went off and accused me of being some kind of fake Robin Hood and told me to get over myself. After a brief argument, it only made sense that you had some kind of financial stake in it. You may not actually make 3d models, but it wouldn't make a ton of sense if you don't. You would be the only person I've ever run into that had a significant emotional reaction to file trading that wasn't relying on it for income. If you're telling the truth, it makes you look like a shameless shill and you'd be better off lying and saying you do make 3d models. At least in that scenario you're not doing it for free.

My problem wasnt the file trading shit. I cringed hard at trying to act like this was some noble or Robin Hood shit. Like, nigga other bitches already do it and you arent special for doing it.

Overall they've made strides to dilute the setting - it's been a long time since 40k was actually grim dark. It's clean high tech super marines nobly fighting for humanity's survival now

It's not that most players specifically like this, but that the vast majority don't care at all. Many people will probably never even notice until they release female sculpts (and even then). Most people won't read Codex: Custodes or the Warhammer Twitter or any of the retards on Goonhammer, Reddit, ResetEra and so on crowing about it. Even fewer people will read it than otherwise would have because Custodes have traditionally been a tourneyfag army and all the pre-release reporting says that their rules are bad. This is a storm in a teacup, exacerbated by people who don't know the difference between Custodes and Marines.

As someone who's been aware of 40K for a long time, finds the lore interesting but has never bought into it as it always seemed far too expensive for what it was; what is the hold that GW has over all of this? Why don't people just cut GW out of their hobby?

I get that they hold the copyright and enforce it with the zeal of an overexcitable inquisitor but why not just stick to the older stuff or make your own for your own use? It's not as is the stereotypical 40Ker isn't borderline obsessional and autistic (in the good way!). Same with figures and other models. Seems you can pick up a 3d printer these days for the cost of 3 or 4 figures and allow the creativity that goes into painting figures completely off the leash. I'd have expected that to be a preferred option for the typical 40K fan.

I strongly considered going back through the hours of media I consumed on the subject early this morning and clipping all the shit I could find. The reason I didn't is because as soon as I would have posted it, you would either ignore it or wave it off as invalid. You're not arguing in the hopes of being compelled. The problem there is that it requires having friends and being able to convince them of anything. A lot of people play at an FLGS or, worse, a GW shop with the average casual crowd who just want to play whatever is current. Tournament players are still more extreme and want their cutting-edge rules. That said, plenty do play older editions, miniature-agnostic games like OPR and whatever else - my own group mostly plays Battlefleet Gothic, which has been untouched by GW since 2010 and which doesn't even acknowledge the 5e Newcron retcons.

As an aside on printers, it's closer to 2 figures than 4 - you can get a 2k printer (which is entry-level these days, but still more than good enough for decent models) for about 100 USD in the first world (depending on how much you print, you might well end up spending more on resin than the printer itself, though) and I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop further. It brings up another thought when it comes to the below, though:

If grogs like myself largely print and only buy a box of models once in a blue moon and some have gone further and sworn off GW entirely - you have a few of those sorts in this very thread - to what extent does this apply? To some extent they're abandoning one group of non-customers in favour of another. Futile, but in both directions.

This is by no means the first raindrop. Warhammer is for Everyone was three years ago. This is one more $CURRENT_YEAR change to my least favourite faction in the game, which shouldn't even be playable in the first place.

I've never particularly cared for Custodes (I have an army though lore-wise I find them a bit dry) but it's still lame.

Everyone recognises this for what it is; the first real sign of rot in the hobby. The first showing of weakness and willingness to fold to the degenerate few, most of whom don't even collect or play.

Will I quit? No lol, but I'll be buying less and 40k as a whole has lost some shine.

I think there is genuine concern about adding female tokens because the company has declared support for ESG and any addition should be under suspicion.

I have no problem with having female characters, as long as they are not under DEI/ESG/Crititical Theory agenda.

Just a few months ago these same attention whores were parading this doubling down as a great victory against "woke".
