The difference is, other fandoms have caused more of a stir. SW fans didn't like The Last Jedi, so they let Solo bomb and Disney had to retool Rise of Skywalker as well as bring out The Mandalorian and Season 7 of The Clone Wars as an apology. Right now, Disney's losing money on SW because the fans don't like the recent output from Filoni. Meaning that the SW fans were dead-serious when they proclaimed that Disney won't be getting their money for fucking up their franchise. That, my friend, is what a successful boycott looks like. That's how it works sometimes. You wanting a company to die doesn't magically make it happen and your only power over GW, or any company for that matter, is the money you decide to give them. When a company pisses you off for any reason, the only thing you can control if you. What other people do during a boycott shouldn't matter to you. Not everything you're a part of has to be some big, viral media spectacle. If they piss enough people off, then they'll feel it eventually, but the only satisfaction you should derive from participating in a boycott is depriving them of YOUR business.
If every person that hated this decision never gave GW a penny ever again, they will still go on being the biggest wargame on the planet. You don't have the individual power to change that, but you can have the discipline over how you spend your own money. Like I said earlier, I stopped giving GW money before I had been around long enough to know that female marines didn't exist. I boycott them because I'm not about to pay $100 for less than an ounce of fragile plastic that isn't rare and will eventually be obsolete. My boycott continues to be successful regardless of what happens to GW. I can't make them lose millions, but I can make them lose hundreds, and I'm pretty good at it.
Meanwhile, GW is still laughing their way to the bank despite all these grand calls of boycotts which have been going on for years. They can put out official lore depicting the God Emperor as a transsexual Mexican woman, and the 40K fans would scream to high heaven that this violates the canon, but at the end of the day, they'll still buy official merchandise, they'll still show up in wargaming events, and they won't say anything when the dude with the 3D-printed custom models gets kicked out of the tournament. So GW has no reason to listen to their complaints; doing things like Primaris Marines, jacking up the price tag, or Fem Custodes won't hurt their bottom line.
That is the point I was making. Demand for GW products is still at an all-time high despite all the crap they've pulled. Hell, scalping GW products specifically is a profitable gig for enterprising individuals. They'll start scalping new books, new models, etc., preorder them when they come out, and when they're sold out, these scalpers sell them back at the market for 3 or 5 times the buying price. The grognards will whine and gnash their teeth, but they will still buy. They always will. And the scalpers will be happy and rich. The scalper thing cracks me up. GW sells a hardback book with a fancy cover, scalpers with bots can sell it for 3x the price on launch day, people gnash their teeth and whine, but then the scalpers sell out still. The prices on ebay for the special edition of the end and the death part 3 have gone UP since that was released(damn near $500 now instead of just 400). If the demand wasn't there, and idiot consumers weren't willing to pay up for bullshit, the scalpers would be left holding onto inventory. It was the same story with shit like people scalping playstation 5 systems, if morons weren't willing to pay 2-3x(or more) the cost, they wouldn't be scalping them. All the while GW knows how much the scalpers can charge, and doesn't increase their prices to match.
This is why all the videos online claiming that GW has finally gone woke and have turned against the fans just make me laugh. They've been turning against their own fans for DECADES now. Even in the 90s you had price hikes and lore changes that were so drastic, some people were losing their patience. Yet people continued to buy the product and keep GW's coffers full. This drama with the Fem Custodes won't change anything. Any more than the shit with the Primaris Marines, Age of Sigmar, the Cease and Desist orders for fan animations, or the many price hikes did. The fans back then claimed that they would boycott GW, that GW has gone too far, yet the products on the store are sold out after they come out, GW is laughing their way to the bank, and the scalpers are counting their profits.People were angry last week with the dropped AoS models. A few beastmen players came out of the woodwork to complain, most of the bitching wasn't from people who had even played against a beastmen army let alone owned one themselves.
Every time a new kill team comes out, it sells out, people bitch, people continue to buy.
The complaints and outrage over their stupid warhammer TV masterclass painting videos not showing the presenter's faces because they had been losing staff who could take an audience to their own youtube channel. In the end, GW did start filming faces later, but no one actually fucking cared because there are better painting tutorials all over youtube for free.
The big NDA controversy where GW had people they sent product to as cheap marketing were signing documents couldn't say they agreed to get free shit. Not only are NDAs nothing new, everyone already knew they existed, the complaining had no effect on GW.
The outrage over GW supposedly sending every fan animator a C&D. GW hasn't seen any impact.
Primaris... the company stock value has skyrocketed. People still complain about primaris, that complaining has accomplished nothing.
A couple idiots burned their WHFB armies on reddit and shit in protest of AoS. People still bitch about AoS. Now AoS sells, people play it, tournaments happen. No impact at all on GWs pocket.
Outrage about the Chapterhouse lawsuit. GW still doing just fine.
Before the leagues of votann thing, people were still complaining about what happened to squats decades later. GW didn't seem to care, and didn't have to.
I'm sure I could take the time to recall even more instances of people needing to boycott GW, it never fucking happens, and if anything GW rebounds with growth every damned time. The cost of freight shipping drastically increasing, the pandemic starting and ending, a global recession. These are the things that have major impact on GWs revenue, not some people here, on discord, on youtube, on dakkadakka, reddit, or anywhere else claiming they'll never buy a GW product again due to some controversy because the day of the week ended in a Y.
History will keep repeating itself, nothing ever changes, at least with this hobby.
