Hey guys, I'm more into model building. I was looking for paints, what do you guys think of vallejo, AK interactive, hiro (filipino paint set), feel free to recommend some paints.

Newer Vallejo, AK 3rd gen, Army Painter Fanatic(this one actually surprised me), pro acryl, are all decent from personal experience. Never even heard of Hiro, so can't comment on it. For metallics specifically, vallejo metal color(not model color) beats everything else out there without getting into stuff that's obnoxious to use(like laquer and alcohol based paints). Pro acryl's distribution is kinda shit even in the US, so if you're outside of the US it'll probably be hard to find or have too much of a markup to be worth it. But the vallejo, AK, and army painter stuff if I only had one(plus the vallejo metal color) and couldn't get anything else, I'd be fine with that.Hey guys, I'm more into model building. Thanks for the detailed recommendations. So far I thought of picking up at least 2 or 3 Citadels for Gold & Red (Retribution armor & Mephiston Red are considered the definitive Gold & Red paints)Citadel, fuck GWs overpriced shit.
I remember they have a limit range but you are able to create many colors from those limited colors, right?Kimera,
Oh really? I always see army painter got a bad reputation in most mini/model painting spaces, what do you think of the new speed paint line?Army Painter Fanatic(this one actually surprised me),
Is the newest line Xpress?Newer Vallejo
I've been impressed by Mig's new Atom range. It's still intended for an airbrush but, unlike your caveat with Tamiya above, it also brushes excellently.Ammo, mediocre paint and there's better options.
Cheap and nasty has been AP's traditional go-to, but Warpaints Fanatic are definitely a significant step up.Oh really? I always see army painter got a bad reputation in most mini/model painting spaces, what do you think of the new speed paint line?
Xpress is a Contrast-like, as with AP speedpaints. The new paints are still VGC and VMC, just in new bottles with a new formula (which supposedly has problems with bubbling, but I can't comment because no-one near me stocks Vallejo). Is the newest line Xpress?
They are the worst gold paints. Again, Vallejo Metal Color. 3:2 gold and copper gets an actual decent gold color that doesn't just look metallic yellow, and it covers well. The only reason to use retributor armor is if you specifically want that particular look. Vince adds extra pigment but I don't think it's particularly necessary myself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26_1W7zR-cAThanks for the detailed recommendations. Yes, because they're single pigment paints. But like I mentioned, you can do this with any artist acrylic from Golden, Liquitex, etc.I remember they have a limit range but you are able to create many colors from those limited colors, right?
Their original warpaints line, like I mentioned further down the post was fucking garbage. I haven't used their speed paints, I personally avoided them the moment I saw the weird reactivation crap they had to correct with a 2.0 verison but I don't imagine there too different than vallejo/GWs contrast/etc.Oh really? I have used some of their xpress paints and they're alright. They've recently(within the past year or so) re-did their game color and model color lines with new branding, changed some tones on a couple colors, added some, etc. This youtube guy covers them well. https://www.youtube.com/@stahly_taleofpainters/videosIs the newest line Xpress?
Yeah, I've seen the atom stuff marketed lately, not familiar with it. Just the "basic" line branded as ammo. The quality of acrylic mini paints has definitely gone up with the stuff released in the past couple of years, especially army painter coming up with a product that isn't just awful(older warpaints line) or defective and needing a 2.0 version.I've been impressed by Mig's new Atom range. It's still intended for an airbrush but, unlike your caveat with Tamiya above, it also brushes excellently.
I'm not sure how it compares against most of the other recent acrylic lines - quality seems to have risen a lot in recent years, but most aren't available to me - but I've preferred it to my limited experience with the (still good) Warpaints Fanatic.
Oh really? I saw a model builder using it for and it looked pretty decent. They are the worst gold paints. Again, Vallejo Metal Color. 3:2 gold and copper gets an actual decent gold color that doesn't just look metallic yellow, and it covers well.
Oh sweet. I'll give them a look. I didn't know of the rebrand.game color and model color lines with new branding, changed some tones on a couple colors, added some, etc. This youtube guy covers them well. https://www.youtube.com/@stahly_taleofpainters/videos
Seconding the recommendation of Stahly. He does good work and his swatches are leagues ahead of most other available options.
Yes, the base Ammo line definitely wasn't spectacular.Yeah, I've seen the atom stuff marketed lately, not familiar with it. Just the "basic" line branded as ammo.
I got a few bottles before seeing stahly mention that, and hadn't seen it as a complaint anywhere myself and hadn't run into it. As he mentions in the video covering them, he doesn't swish his brush around fast enough to make bubbles in the first place. I have caused bubbles with other paints, but that's usually a sign to tell myself to slow the hell down while I'm slopping paint onto a model for a fast basecoat but didn't want to airbrush(like blocking in colors or whatever).(which supposedly has problems with bubbling, but I can't comment because no-one near me stocks Vallejo).
I usually stick with Vallejo and P3. Biggest issue with the latter is that Privateer Press has slow shipping, and it's probably gonna be worse for a bit until the logistics of being acquired by Steamforge Games is ironed out. They do have better prices and larger paint pots in comparison to other companies though.Hey guys, I'm more into model building. Mephiston Red was cloned by all the other makers. IIRC most of the mainline GW paints were. Thanks for the detailed recommendations. So far I thought of picking up at least 2 or 3 Citadels for Gold & Red (Retribution armor & Mephiston Red are considered the definitive Gold & Red paints)
Yeah, all of the popular paints have been cloned with a different name. Dakkadakka has a decent chart here:Mephiston Red was cloned by all the other makers. IIRC most of the mainline GW paints were.
Vallejo Model Heavy Red (141) (These are base paints)
Vallejo Game Red (926) (These are layer paints)
Two Thin Coats Sanguine Scarlet
etc etc
I’ve been looking into Necromunda more and more just because of the contempt GW has for 40k. Rules seem more legit and can do a more narrative focus game with friends to keep it interesting. Might be able to use Inquisitorial Agents, Arbites, Breachers, and Blooded for starters. (I know I've been on this for awhile with Necromunda). But an Inquisition investigation with House alliances and gang recruitment seems interesting as a Dark Heresy style tabletop game.As always, the “side games” churn out the best shit.
Black Library authors are just useless. An Alpha Legion civil war between secret loyalists and modern chaos wanting to discard the old ways to settle with the new Black Legion is such a narrative build up they just can't handle. There's so much to build up off of they just can't handle it. At least with Night Lords it's simple. The alpha legion is loyal to the emperor they own a super secret mission that cannot be explained.
it's funny how no one can actually use them properly because the vast majority of GW writers aren't clever they're meant to be elite psychological warfare slash spec OPS units we're basically a combination of seal team six and the CIA.
The alpha legions primarchs both engaging in civil war with the members who think they're actually serving chaos would be coolBlack Library authors are just useless. That looks like the kind of result you get if you task an elderly Spanish woman with no art training to restore a fresco. The character on the second cover would pass as an ordinary space marine with very little modification, even the back ground is low energy and lame compared to the original.Apparently GW is republishing older collections with some of the new, lame, clean art.
Wait until you play DarktideI just got into warhammer via the Rogue Trader game and this shit is so fucking badass. I played vermintide a long time ago but just wrote it off as a left 4 dead knockoff but this shit is fucking twisted. I'm on the last act and this shit is so fucking twisted and badass its unreal. I thought everyone who liked this shit was a faggot but holy fuck is this shit epic.
