I can see how the use of religious aesthetics could be offensive to worshippers of said faiths.
I do to, but that doesn't bother me. That's what's most intriguing about the setting.
I don’t think they are making a joke out of your religion, no more than 40k is, and that series has the Emperor wipe out the last remnants of Earth’s religion with Reddit atheist logic.
The religious themes in 40k really only resemble Christianity on a surface level, in truth they could apply to many different religions. Perhaps they do. For the most part, I think he setting offers a valid critique of the institutions and ideas it parodies, and that parody makes the critique feel more honest and grounded. The satire of it serves to kind of prevent the audience from taking offense, it isn't meant as an insult. It's not pointed at any one group or people but a general warning to heed.

40k certainly isn't making a statement on a lack of faith, some black library authors might, but the setting largely doesnt concern itself with atheists and their beliefs about non beliefs.
I mean maybe you could interpret atheism as the lead cause to the path of destruction if youre reading the horus heresy novels, but outside of that... It ain't much to do about nothin.
The point of the setting is to take everything to the extreme.
That's definitely not what I got from it.
The world has been in a global war against the forces of Hell for centuries.
Yes and it would seem that the faithful have been driven to commit the most blasphemous acts imaginable, with no end in sight as they desperately try to stave off defeat in a war they're clearly losing (as you have described). The things ordinary people are doing in the name of Jesus Christ are so horrific and abominable, otherwise good souls are rejecting God and embracing sin, the exact corruption Satan has strived for all these millennia.
The'yve already lost on a spiritual level. it's over for them in every way that matters. If the writers had any clue of what Christianity is, the war between Earth and Hell would never truly end for this reason, It wouldnt be about Hell's inability to cooperate and achieve military success, it would be due to the perfect endless moral decay of God's 'faithful'.
The mortals are fighting so desperately to hold onto a life that is so short and temporary, losing God and giving up everything so you can cling on to what exactly???
The writers simply don't understand Good and Evil, their motivations. They miss the deeper points entirely. They don't understand the spiritual framework within they are working. They desperately needed to hire on a religious consultant.
To make matters worse, the developers have basically admitted that, in their eyes there are no good guys.
Really? I can accept that the religous institutions have utterly collapsed, but to suggest that not a single saint or hero remains. Does everyone in this setting share an equally retarded understanding of God and religion?
So all of the 'faithful' and that the church are in ruins? Am I to accept that God himself has lost his creation or give up on humanity entirely by this point?
The more I think about it the sadder it gets, just how out of touch these people probably are. To just not understand this stuff... They've probably been missing out on relationship with god for their entire lives. These fuckers need to go to church.
