Warhammer 40k

Imagine going back in time 40 years and explaining to John Blanche what a smart phone is, that it would be required to play the game, and that the company would be collecting and monetizing data on who you are playing with, how often, and what units you are using to play. I bet you it'll track where you are playing too. Stockholders *need* to know what the ratio is of kitchen table warhammer compared to playing in an LGS compared to playing in a branded store.

Using the official killteam app is such a pain in the ass especially when compared to just opening wahpedia on a tablet to browse. I can’t imagine how much unfun and cumbersome it will be for 40k. Also I’m a physical media enjoyer and enjoy having cards listed out with all the data on hand to go through.

For the killteam app you’d think there’d be a quick selection of what operative data cards you’re using but noooo. It would be nice to select and match it up against the opponents operatives for dice rolls but it’d probably be easier to use LLMs to code an app that’ll do it for you than have GW making an official app.

I'm a codex supremacist. One of the biggest turn offs for me with games like legion and x wing was the stupid card upgrades. Let me see everything I need to see on one or two pages max, instead of trying to remember what cards can be taken on what

Then again that entire card system was a way of forcing you to buy their models, heaven forbid you proxy stuff

I'd be top dollar in ten years when the app is firmly entrenched and a requirement to play you'll need to scan a code with every box of models to use it in a list. They'll be mining so much data from the app. Who you are playing. Where. With what. How often. How many People are using models compared to how many they've sold. Your account is linked on the app, They'll track if you're buying models from them direct compared to what you're using. Absolutely dystopian.

And yet people *beg* for digital rules

To give Legion credit, you don't HAVE to buy the cards. You can go to their website and print off the ones you need, as well as any of the core rule books. For free. New models also come with the cards

Also on fairness, you could always do that. With any game. Its called piracy. But cards printed out on computer paper look and feel gross lmao, cheapens the whole experience

Its like arguing tou can just print out paper standees for a warhammer army. Sure you *can*

True but I'm just saying to the credit of Legions developers that they made piracy unnecessary.

Little Index cards that contain nothing besides unit abilities or stats aren't too comparable to the actual minis IMO. The Minis are a huge part of the hobby for many. You could laminate simple paper sheets and you'd probably get a similar result to the vanilla card stock they're printed on

I'm likely just particularly anal about that sort of thing, I fully admit that lol

So get them printed on proper card stock and laminated at an office store? It'll still cost less than buying the cards from the vendor. If you're going to print them at home.. .again just get some heavier paper and put 'em in sleeves.

I found a website that makes playing cards with custom images on them for like 16 bucks. That's pretty good

Its the gloss, the resolution, and other details that gou arent getting without a multi thousand dollar printer lol

Yeah, so go to Staples, OfficeDepot, Fedex Office, wherever and get them to print it in their few thousand dollar printer. Will it match the offset press that the factory cards come from? No. But you can still get a stack of 3x5 or similar cards printed and laminated for 10-20 bucks on some heavier stock.

Let's not kid ourselves that Warhammer would be at all worth playing if it wasn't for the emotional investment of your little guys you spent dozens of hours assembling and painting. Not even saying that as a criticism, it's just the thing that separates it from a regular board game.

YEARS, my lad, YEARS. Ever since this.

The franchise is surfing on loyalty I had from the 90's playing Space Marine/Epic scale and while it's down to drops, it somehow ain't dry yet.

Armoured car AND a half track? GW, you're spoiling me.

I do wonder the size of these. Some Bolt Action or Tamiya model kits might make great cheap proxies.

Considering getting the Red Corsair combat patrol.
The Internet: "They padded it out with beastmen! Baaaaaw!"
Me: "They padded it out with beastmen? I'll take 8!"

Though seriously, I kept hearing beastmen/abhumans were sent to legends. If they're back, I'm on board.

Are there any Red Corsair specific elements/characters in that box? Asking because I might make them my dudes (which are SM renegades).

So Orcs confirmed as the little brother army.

Are they going to be doing tiered starter boxes again?

Wanted to share this one. This kid has Pissed Off Video Gamer energy but rants about 40k and other tabletop wargames.

I also think that's why the current design philosophy of "this guy goes together this way only" and "you only use whats in the box" will hurt them in the long run.

Historically an advantage GW had was it was "my guys" but thats gone to the wayside.

Its like lego focusing on milking the nostalgia of their adult audience at the expense of creating that same nostalgia in the next generation
